The Shaolin Avengers (1976)

Entertaining semi-remake of Men from the Monastery, with an unhealthy fixation on Fu Sheng's bum!

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I feel the polar opposite. I really like Nicholson's Jack, loathe his Joker. :D Even though I don't care for The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger was a much better Joker. Don't get me started on the pistol thing! Yeesh! I feel Nicholson suits the 1940s comic book Joker very well, as did Ceasar Romero (who...

And one of my all time fave movie scenes is where the Joker nonsensically survives a full-on assult from the Batwing and proceeds to blow it up with a ludicrously long pistol!

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I love it for shameless nostalgic reasons, but yeah, it's a mess.

On the hand, I prefer Jack Nicholson as the Joker then as Jack Napier. I feel if we are to see The Joker pre-transformation, he should be a nondescript loser ala The Killing Joke. As the film is, there is no real transformation.

Eagle's Killer (1981) Disapointing John Cheung vs Hwang Jang Lee movie, relying way too much on endless comedy scenes. I swear they only got to 90min by ensuring Cheng Hong-Yip's character stutters...really...slowly. Slightly redeemed by the use of Riz Ortolani's theme for Brutes and Savages , but ...

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow Part II (1978) Director: Chang Hsin-Yi Somewhat to my surprise, this doesn't slavishly copy the formula of its famous namesake (bullied student befriends master in hiding) and is instead a mixture of boring escort company shenanigans and vaguely amusing con-man antics. D...

The Dragon from Russia (1990) Director: Clarence Ford Utterly shambolic adaptation of the Crying Freeman manga, jumping between stylish action scenes that you could frame on your wall and low-brow Drunken Master style humour, with a vague plot linking them together. Sam Hui makes for a charmingly g...

The Blacksheep Affair (1998) Probably the greatest achievement of Hong Kong Legends was giving the impression with their awesome music promo that this was the best damn HK movie ever. I mean, just take a look! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb6XOCOmXjA But, other than the pretty damn good action s...

REVENGE OF THE DRUNKEN MASTER (1982) Amusing South Korean imitation of you-know-what, starring one Johnny Chan. Much of the plot revolves around his acupuncture skills rather then his drunken boxing, suggesting the latter was bolted onto an existing script. Eagle Han Ying is on hand as a cop trackin...

The Association (1975) Incredibly sleazy Golden Harvest offering that tries to make up for its shortcomings with lots of nudity, including cinema's funkiest and funniest abortion scene! One-shot star Byong Yu left production early, resulting in a martial arts film that has no martial arts finale, j...

Enchanting Ghost (Hong Kong, 1970) dvd 3.5/5 What a beautifully sad movie. Li Hua Yang plays a woman who is swindled out of her home by an evil uncle who wants to live off the wealth and build a concubine of pretty girls. She is left with nothing and leaves town, settling into the ‘haunted house’ o...

I don't think any of the characters in Golden Swallow were in Come Drink With Me. Even though the heroines share a common name, they don't seem to be the same character - and I think the historical periods are different, too.

The Karate Kid, Part II (1986) ***
Superior sequel adds depth of characterisation and new found maturity,
which makes the regressive Part 3 all the more painful.
I missed Elizabeth Shue - seems her character did a complete about-face between films.

Devil Woman (1974) Hong Kong/Fillipino co-production that sounds like it should be a awesome combination of horror and kung fu, but mostly feels like two seperate films stuck together. There's a girl with snakes for hair killing people off (that's meant to be a shocking twist, but since it's all ov...

MAGNIFICENT got a widescreen DVD from Crash Cinema nearly two decades ago. I hope the print is still around as it would make a good source for a BD, even with its burnt in theatrical subs.

Story of Drunken Master (1979) Tame but pleasant enough starring role for Yuen Siu-tien (looking considerably older and frailer then he did in Dance of the Drunk Mantis, released a mere two months earlier), which is much in the vein of the old Wong Fei-hung films, and Yuen is essentially playing Wo...

Bruce and Dragon Fist (1978) Feels a bit like two different movies: a comedy with Bruce Le mugging shamelessly mugging as a beggar with a bindle, whilst a Korean martial arts drama plays out around him. Not much to say here 4/10 Bruce and Shaolin Kung Fu II (1978) Simplistic but entertaining Bruce ...

Clones of Bruce Lee (1980) This potentially hilarious flick wastes no time getting down to business, with 3 clones (Dragon Lee, Bruce Le, and some fellow called Bruce Lai who looks in no way like the original), and a rouge's gallery of Bolo, Chiang Tao, Jon Benn, etc... Sadly, this peaks halfway th...

The Meg (USA, 2018) [Flight] - 3/5 Jaws for today's kids: Statham vs. giant CGI shark. Very watchable nevertheless. It's a bit amusing how clearly this was aimed at the Chinese markets... the last 30 minutes in spoken mainly in Chinese! My #1 guilty pleasure this year, so I'd probably even rate it ...
