Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Adventures of Zatoichi (座頭市関所破り) (Japan, 1964) [BD] - 3.5/5 Part 9. Sometimes you can do without a good plot. The characters, scenery and the hugely atmospheric final duel, all handled with finesse, make the uninspired `yakuza scheming with corrupt officials to extort villagers` plot surprisingly u...

Re: The Official Sonny Chiba Thread!

It's actually approximately at 1:24:43-1:24:49 on the R1 US DVD that runs 2:00:22. That's odd! I have the HK IVL DVD which runs 2:01:37 and the scene plays at 1:31:40 https://sketchesofcinema.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/maka2.jpg At 1:24:43 there's the scene with Chiba and Sanada by the river. http...

Re: The Official Sonny Chiba Thread!

Does anyone have Samurai Reincarnation (1981) in their possession with the English dub? I'd appreciate if someone could check the "God will be cut" line and post it here word to word. It should be around 90 minutes into the film in the uncut 2 hour version (a lot earlier in the 88 min US version), s...

Zatoichi's Flashing Sword (座頭市あばれ凧) (Japan, 1964) [BD] - 3/5 Part 7. Evil yakuza Tatsuo Endo tries to obtain a riverside area from a decent boss who is harbouring Zatoichi without knowing his true identity. Standard entry with a routine storyline. Katsu is lovable as usual and Endo has a great evil...

From Paris with Love (France, 2010) [VoD] – 3.5/5
An utterly insane action film in which Samuel L. Jackson has had satanic sex with Steven Seagal who then has given birth to skinhead John Travolta who stars in the film.

The other you included (the last link) "the Gokiburi". What is that? It's not mentioned in her imdb or in any other list that i saw. How do you know she stars in that?
She's in it. Supporting role.

The Tale of Zatoichi Continues (続・座頭市物語) (Japan, 1962) [BD] - 3.5/5 Part 2. Zatoichi meets a man from the past (Katsu's brother Tomisaburo Wakayama). Enjoyable, wonderfully short (72 min) sequel nevertheless feels slightly superficial compared to the amazing original. The score (by Ichiro Saito ins...

House on Fire (火宅の人) (Japan, 1986) [DVD] - 3/5 80s novel adaptation of the stormy private life of a novelist, thankfully directed by Kinji Fukasaku. Kind of funny that he's not a star, as I think Hoshi means 'star' in Japanese :)
I didn't come to think of that when I wrote that sentence

(though the joke only works for English speakers since "hoshi" only refers to the stars up in the sky; a movie star is simply "star" / スター).
