Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

From his Roman Pornos Virgin nanka kowakunai is kinda cool, a Roman Porno variation of Walter Hill's The Warriors. That does look kind of interesting. Hopefully it'll eventually get a release without a giant watermark taking up a quarter of the screen. https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B06XZWY2FQ Still f...

Re: 1960s/1970s/1980s Japanese Genre Cinema – From Books and Magazine Articles

Here’s a great little story I wanted to share from Norifumi Suzuki’s book Toei Guerilla Senki (東映ゲリラ戦記) (page 51-52). This takes place sometime in early 1972, after Reiko Ike had become a big star and Suzuki was preparing for his 5th film with Ike. Summary and rough translation: “One of my favourite...

Night Guy (夜の手配師) (Japan, 1968) [VoD] - 2.5/5 Hustler of the night Tatsuo Umemiya seduces beauties, deals girls to hostess clubs and does a bit of gigolo work himself. But he's still a small timer, the 60s Japanese pimp version of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Not a particularly good film,...

Bad Girl Mako (不良少女 魔子) (Japan, 1971) [DVD] - 3/5 Koretsugu Kurahara's first and last Nikkatsu New Action - the studio went Roman Porno three months later. Though a hip gangster film, this also has the kind of low key character realism that young Nikkatsu audiences identified with. The morals are a...

New thread. I moved a few old posts here, and will be posting new content... infrequently. I’ll post some photos and also try my best to summarize and translate some gems, within the scope of my skills. Native or more advanced Japanese speakers, please point out if I make any mistakes.

Most Japanese films, yes. I'd love to have subs attached, but for 80% of the Japanese films I watch they don't exist and probably never will.

A pretty great Toho New Action series coming up at Laputa. Dying to see Attack on the Sun (1970) and The Target of Roses (1972) by Kiyoshi Nishimura. And maybe Bullet Wound as well. The others I've seen. The whole program: 11/09(土)~11/15(金) 「狙撃」(Sun Above, Death Below) (Hideichi Nagahara, 1968) 11/...
