The Miracle of Joe Petrel (海燕ジョーの奇跡) (Japan, 1984) [VoD] – 3.5/5 Toshiya Fujita's gangster film loosely based on the 4th Okinawa Yakuza Conflict (also the base for Okinawa Yakuza War, 1976) where a Kyokuryu-kai president was shot dead by a hitman. The film starts out a bit dull, but gains momentum ...

New Battles without Honor and Humanity (新仁義なき戦い) (Japan, 1974) [BD] - 3.5/5 The somewhat over-rated Battles w/o Honor and Humanity series has never been most exciting Fukasaku in my books, and the New series even less so. But this first one, while a rehash of the original films, features very enjoy...

Yakuza Deka: No Epitaphs for Us (Japan, 1971) [VoD] - 3.5/5 The 4th and final film in the Yakuza Deka series. It's another programmer picture, but this one does its job admirably, packing action, fights and great stunt sequences every 15 minutes and filling the gaps with Chiba riding a horse toples...

Anyone gotten the Delicate Skillful Fingers BD yet? I'd like to know if it's worth the upgrade? A screencap or two would be hugely appreciated.

Inujini seshi mono (犬死にせしもの) (Japan, 1986) [VoD] - 1/5 Fisherman Hiroyuki Sanada and two pals go pirate in 1947 Japan. A rather miserable drama with awful quirky direction and performances, including a couple of Japanese Richard Nortons. Sanada is the only one who comes off at least half-tolerable....

Lover’s Time (Koibitotachi no jikoku) (恋人たちの時刻) (1987) Kadokawa discoveries, part deux. Great opening scene with cute, disturbed girl (Michiko Kawai from Somai’s P.P. Rider) silently watching the sea. She sees a lonely surfer boy swallowed by the waves. The next moment two biker guys emerge and try...

Thanks for the reviews. I ordered HIGH SCHOOL AFFAIR just for the heck of it. Been a while since I've seen any new old Japanese movies. Looks enjoyable.
Looking forward to hearing what you thought about it.

Kadokawa launched their own Kadokawa Channel on Amazon Prime, so I decided to finally watch Aijou monogatari . Curtain Call (愛情物語) (1984) Utterly crazy Kadokawa dance flick with an amazing, ultra-80s "Broadway" musical opening which also collects all the black dudes in Japan into one scene! It's poo...

Lovers Lost (道頓堀川) (Japan, 1982) [VoD] - 3/5 A Kinji Fukasaku Shochiku drama about two young blokes in Osaka. The origin is a novel by Teru Miyamoto, whose Muddy River was filmed by Kohei Oguri a year before. Fukasaku’s film is a bit of an acting showcase for relative newcomers Hiroyuki Sanada and ...

I'm starting to think the only reason people talk so much about slipcases is because it's the one topic that you can't get banned for. Probably. I think if you deleted all case, price and release date related posts, you'd lose about 97% of the Bluray.com's posts. I was bit too hard on the sit...

Keiko Sekine x 6 With Laputa Asagaya running a Keiko Sekine / Daiei Lemon Sex series in Tokyo soon, but me not being there, I gave myself a quick introduction to Daiei's early 70s youth film star at home since most of these films are streaming on Amazon Prime (also out on DVD). The Forbidden Fruit (新・高校生ブルース) (1970) [VoD] – 2.5/5 More Daiei conservatism, this time disguised as sex comedy. A group of boys makes a pledge to lose their virginity. Do you think Woo ever saw The Creature Called Man, sounds familliar :) He was influenced a lot by Chang Cheh too (and The Killer shares some themes with Le Samourai imo) but who knows Hard to say. US teaser:

I remain hopeful that the film is (a lot) better than that teaser. Not a single interesting shot there.

Seems like the film will hit American theatres long before it opens in Japan.
