Re: Classic Japanese Exploitation (pinky violence & pink)

1. Female Delinquent: A Docu-Drama (実録不良少女 姦) (Toshiya Fujita, 1977) (genre: violence / delinquent girl) Ultra-realistic and ultra-violent bad girl drama. Imagine Kinji Fukasaku directing a Sukeban film with Toshiya Fujita ‘s usual youth film themes and social commentary. Fantastic performances, in...

I think I'd be more satisfied with the Delicate Skillful Fingers art if the original poster and re-issue DVD arts hadn't been so great... I really love them both! https://sketchesofcinema.files.wordpress.com/2019/06/deli.jpg Same with Modern Prostitution... the art is alright, but why not stick more...

Bloodstained Clan Honor (血染の代紋) (Japan, 1970) [35mm] - 2/5 Unusually bland Kinji Fukasaku film about the yakuza exploiting port slums in post war re-construction era. Fumio Watanabe is the rotten one, Bunta Sugawara an honourable boss who receives no thanks from the blind common folks to whom yakuz...

Kind of funny that he's not a star, as I think Hoshi means 'star' in Japanese :)
I didn't come to think of that when I wrote that sentence

(though the joke only works for English speakers since "hoshi" only refers to the stars up in the sky; a movie star is simply "star" / スター).

The Secret of the Urn (丹下左膳 飛燕居合斬り) (Japan, 1966) [35mm] - 2.5/5 Hideo Gosha's first Toei picture is below par in his otherwise gripping, visionary 60s filmography. He was reportedly brought in to breathe some final life into the out-of-fashion samurai film genre before Toei would pull off the cord...

The Most Suitable Profession for Women (女がいちばん似合う職業) (1990) Interesting, off-kilter neo noir with mentally off-the-rails detective Kaori Momoi entering relationship with murder suspect. It's neither lust nor a grand plan; she just ain't got all the Moomins in the valley and figures in her lonely mi...

Mothra vs. Godzilla (モスラ対ゴジラ) (Japan, 1964) [35mm] - 2.5/5 A bit duller and less colorful picture than Mothra, with less exotics and rather bland characters. The environmental message remains timely, sadly, and the battles between Mothra and Godzilla are quite intense. The Most Suitable Profession ...

Re: Retro Cinemas and Cult Films in Japan

I’m not that much of a kaiju fan, but since I was in Tokyo for Fukasaku, I also went to see a couple of Mothra films in 35mm . The films were playing in Ikebukuro at Shin bungeiza , who have the biggest screen out there for 35mm screenings, and excellent seats. The program is nearly always double fe...

Mothra (モスラ) (Japan, 1961) [35mm] - 3/5 Entertaining kaiju with a bit of exotic island adventure touch. Editing could be tighter for the 100 min running time, but mostly compensated for by lavish colour cinematography and better than usual cast: Frankie Chan makes a sympathetic lead, Peanuts are Pe...

Another recent film that deserves some attention, not really a "drama" as much as neo-noir but I can't think of any better thread for it. Alley Cat (アリーキャット) (Japan, 2017) A failed boxer (Yôsuke Kubozuka) and a punk (rock star Kenji Furuya) try to help a woman blackmailed by obsessive ex with reveng...

Sleepless (Italy, 2001) [DVD] - 1/5 Argento returned to giallo... with this piece of shit. Ugly, completely nonsensical and paired with atrocious English voice acting.
