Just out of curiosity, how did you come up with rating films with a maximum score of 4? It doesn't bother me like it does bother other people here, I'm just wondering how you came up with it.Markgway wrote:I'm not being pretentious. It's just how I like to rate films.
You guys are free to mark out of 5 or 10 if you so wish.
And you all know I mark out of 4 now so hardly work explaining each time.

He plagiarised it from the Barry Norman of US film critique Leonard Maltin.thelostdragon wrote:Just out of curiosity, how did you come up with rating films with a maximum score of 4? Yes... and I believe Maltin took it from a critic called Steven H. Scheuer.brooce-leroy wrote:He plagiarised it from the Barry Norman of US film critique Leonard Maltin.

I give your rating-system a score of 'toenails' on a scale of 'bukake-hentai'.Markgway wrote:Yes... and I believe Maltin took it from a critic called Steven H. Scheuer.brooce-leroy wrote:He plagiarised it from the Barry Norman of US film critique Leonard Maltin.

The Host *.5
Big budget Korean monster movie with American SFX.
I can't remember the last time I saw a movie with so many interesting ideas that so comprehensively failed to deliver on a single one.
As a horror it isn't scary... satire is heavy handed... the drama is funnier than the black comedy... the acting and writing often terrible... the politics ludicrous...
The only time I ever see Korean movies is on Film 4 and I've yet to see one that's really impressed me.

It was around 2004 when Korean cinema was the shit for a short moment, delivered a couple of excellent ones (Oldboy, My Sassy Girl, Kim Ki Du's, most importantly Spring, Summer, Fall...), then everyone lost their interest...Markgway wrote: The only time I ever see Korean movies is on Film 4 and I've yet to see one that's really impressed me.
I watch maybe one Korean film per year these days, although this year I may end up with two. Got The Man from Nowhere BD sitting behind me (may work or not, the previous copy didn't), plus interested in I Saw the Devil (just can't figure out which version I'm supposed to watch, and which one's been released on BD where).
Recently, the multiple versions have become a real pain in the ass for me, too. Used to be a HK problem, but now from Japan is following the example. From the last 15 months alone we've got:
Karate-Robo Zaborgar (2011) (JP Cut & International Cut)
Guilty of Romance (2011) (JP Cut & International Cut)
Helldriver (2010) (JP Cut & International Cut)
A Night in Nude: Salvation (2010) (Theatrical Cut vs. Director's Cut)
13 Assassins (JP Cut & International Cut)
I don't even dare to quess how many HK and KR films suffered the same fate...

Yeah, the whole 'different cuts' is a huge pain in the ass.
It has certainly made me buy less movies and made me download more. If they can't be bothered to just offer us the 'right' version from the get-go but want to fuck around like this, then I can't be bothered giving them my money.
Just downloaded Azumi yesterday, which didn't have an uncut release here in the west I believe (which is why I never bought it). The BR-rip I downloaded should be the complete movie.

The director's cut is available fully uncut on DVD in Germany and in Austria.Yi-Long wrote:Just downloaded Azumi yesterday, which didn't have an uncut release here in the west I believe (which is why I never bought it).

And on subbed R2J.
I'm happy you ended up with the incomplete piece of crap Taiwan BD (rip), or whatever it was.

Is it? English subs and all on the german release? The dutch and UK release were cut when I last checked. Had already seen the movie on TV though (MTV), so I could wait for a decent release to come along.thelostdragon wrote:The director's cut is available fully uncut on DVD in Germany and in Austria.Yi-Long wrote:Just downloaded Azumi yesterday, which didn't have an uncut release here in the west I believe (which is why I never bought it).

What's missing from the Taiwan cut? I thought that was supposed to be the uncut movie, according to yesasia?HungFist wrote:And on subbed R2J.

Someone reported it has a running time of 135:02. The R2J is 142:43. Missing some scenes towards the end, plus ending credits, and maybe something more.Yi-Long wrote:What's missing from the Taiwan cut? But wasn't it the Korean version the one that was cut for violence? But I think it still has scenes that are not in the (more violent) International Version. That's why it's so confusing. I don't know which version would be preferrable...gasteropod wrote:Tell me about it, apparently the UK Blu-ray is the Korean cut though.HungFist wrote:plus interested in I Saw the Devil (just can't figure out which version I'm supposed to watch, and which one's been released on BD where).
There's a comparison at wildgrounds, but I won't see it in fear of spoilers.

Thanks. The one I downloaded does indeed have a running-time of around 135 mins. I thought that was gonna be the uncut movie. Oh well. I'll look into it but I wasn't gonna watch it any time soon anyway, cause I already have quite a backlog...HungFist wrote:Someone reported it has a running time of 135:02. The R2J is 142:43. I presumed that it would be the uncut Korean version rather than the censored one if you get me, but yeah apparently it does have less violence than the international version. I'm waiting to see which version Magnolia's Blu-ray is before I buy one.HungFist wrote:But wasn't it the Korean version the one that was cut for violence? Korean films tend to be wild like a feral dog, abandoning rhyme and reason at times just for some amusing silliness or dark violence. I thought The Host pulled this off very well, mixing innappropriate silliness with good kineticism and tension in the latter half.

Ip Man 2 ★★★★ out of ★★★★★
Yes it's a standerd storyline (for genre fans), but more than made up for by Sammo Hung's superb performance behind and in front of the camera. The fights are expertly choreographed and are great 'story tellers'. Donnie is as good as the first film acting wise, but there is no doubt he is sharing the lead, equal star billing with a career rejuvenated Sammo Hung.

Couldn't agree more with that. I prefer the sequel to the original, purely because the choreography is about 100 times better. Donnie's acting performance as Ip Man is much more assured and comfortable too. The only downside is the much documented OTT-ness of the "gwailo" foreign devils.luckystars wrote:Ip Man 2 ★★★★ out of ★★★★★
