Day of the Dead is a great movie. Under-rated by some idots for reasons that go beyond me.
The opening 10 minutes is best zombie cinema ever made. And the score is fantastic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_YXeEfj3F8
(there used to be a 30 minute version of this, but I can't find it anymore...)
The film, the score, and the gore effects, are one of my main inspirations for the apocalyptic zombie road movie screenplay I'm working on... bringing back the 70's / 80's zombies. The running assholes can go fuck themselves...

I'm amazed the incredible score has only been issued once on CD! A terrible shame only 300 were pressed...seems its a £100 collectors item now.HungFist wrote:Day of the Dead is a great movie. Under-rated by some idots for reasons that go beyond me.

I agree about the make up (prosthetics and animatronics). I gasp every time a bite is taken, eyeballs poked in, or entrails get ripped out!! If I had to keep only one era/genre of film to watch...it would be the late 70s/early 80s fantasy films.....the production values of the best films were off the hook!! ..and sadly will never be matched...even with todays money..

Cowboys & Aliens: 3/5
A strange genre mix but entertaining enough I guess. Outisde of Bond, Daniel Craig has a rugged charm. Thought there was some strong content for a 12A especially the alien make up
The film seemed to lack an internal logic though which kind of annoyed me, as did the way it was shot. Some shots looked quasi-3D (even though it was 2D?) and characters always looked as if they were super-imposed on the screen, taking you out of the film.

Law Abiding Citizen - 3/5
Solid cast. What a shame the film went so much over the top. It wasn't believable anymore towards the ending. I don't need a film to be realistic, but it has to be believable.

The Killer Inside Me. 8.5/10
Michael Winterbottom is a figure in the industry that really interests me, I mean his films do...but the man himself produces such a broad range of films and genres, and can seemingly pull it off every time. Having said that I must say that prior to watching Killer Inside Me I still hadn't considered myself a fan. The last film I watched was the excellent Genova, a really efective and haunting drama. Which I really enjoyed to a degree, but found it also emotionally hard going. Something you could say was the point of the film.
I must admit that I didn't know too much about the Killer Inside Me before I watched it. A friend who saw it told me the film was very good but extremely gritty...I now see why he thought so, and have read about the audience and critical reaction to the film. Maybe its because I watch too many films or love cinema THAT much, but I honestly feel that the violence in this film was pitched to a perfect level as a story telling device...for at least SOME of the audience.
Perhaps films like this should have a warning before hand...just don't bother if you're easily offended or just don't want to be challenged by any films you watch. Anyway why should I even care what others thought? Yes I was shocked, yes the film was gritty as hell...yes I enjoyed it.
EDIT:
Interesting video of Winterbottom addressing some of the negative response the film received

Lousy neo-noir with a particularly risible denoument. If it weren't for the film's controversial scenes of violence aganist women this would've rightly disappeared into oblivion.

Seeing as the 1952 novel is considered a pulp classic with Winterbottom's film being the second film adaptation almost fifty years later (not to mention being referenced by some big name artists) then I think it's safe to say you couldn't be more wrong there.Markgway wrote:Lousy neo-noir with a particularly risible denoument. I've not yet seen the film but that is an interesting video. His point that it's more moral to show a violent film violently is spot on. How can it be more moral to show a violent film dumbed down so the viewer can stomach it? That's immoral to the violence.luckystars wrote:The Killer Inside Me. 8.5/10: Interesting video of Winterbottom addressing some of the negative response the film received

People have become desensitised to violence in a movie screen. So much movie violence is completely unrealistic, we forgot that someone just got shot/murdered etc...
I can understand why some people just won't watch such a film but I do find it a shame they won't because films like Reservoir Dogs are excellent and only one scene is hard to watch. Then again I have little to no interest in seeing rape depicted on screen, although I have seen Straw Dogs but don't wish to see Irreversible.
Were Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba good? I was really surprised to see both of them were in this. It's not their usual sort of film at all.
p.s - A Mighty Heart is excellent Lucky Stars btw.

Straw Dogs is another excellent and provocative film thats a very uneasy watch. Again I can see why people would be outraged by Straw Dogs, plus that film also has a very eery tone to it. Certainly the remake is a shallow move - I just wont bother watching.bradavon wrote:I can understand why some people just won't watch such a film but I do find it a shame they won't because films like Reservoir Dogs are excellent and only one scene is hard to watch. Kate Hudson is excellent and very well cast. Alba is actually very good in it too, she is a far better actress than critics will admit (Kermode, yawwwwwwwnnnnnnn). The supporting cast are superb though, something the outraged reviews fail to observe..
I'll be watching Mighty Heart soon ish...I've omitted to see it largely because of Angelina Jolie....but I'm sure it is worth the watch.
The reaction to the violence in Killer Inside Me reminds me of how overwhelmed people reportedly were watching Martyrs...drawing attention to the perverted viewpoint that Torture Porn type violence is only acceptable if its for 'fun' (Saw, Hostel etc.), and has no place played straight in a serious film.

What did he say about Alba in this? Neither actress usually stretch themselves to be fair and Alba in particular usually goes for the easy eye candy roles. It's easy to pull holes in her performance of all you've got tog on is her looks.luckystars wrote:Kate Hudson is excellent and very well cast. Are you not a fan? She's excellent in it, as she is in The Changeling. I am a fan though but in A Mighty Heart she's especially good. I rank her performance up there with Pulp Fiction in the "what the fuck, how did they not get nominated for an Oscar" stakes. IMO she's so good you completely forget she's an A-List actress and just see the performance. Something you cannot do seeing Brad Pitt in Troy for example, which is rubbish too.luckystars wrote:I'll be watching Mighty Heart soon ish...I've omitted to see it largely because of Angelina Jolie....but I'm sure it is worth the watch.
That is a weird one. It's almost as if it's considered acceptable of violence is played out in a fun way. Saw is very sadistic in places.luckystars wrote:The reaction to the violence in Killer Inside Me reminds me of how overwhelmed people reportedly were watching Martyrs...drawing attention to the perverted viewpoint that Torture Porn type violence is only acceptable if its for 'fun' (Saw, Hostel etc.), and has no place played straight in a serious film.
I found Straw Dogs okay to watch. It's not as graphic as I was lead to believe but is certainly powerful and controversial.

What's the novel's reputation got to do with the film?
I didn't read the novel.
I watched the film...
...and I'm obviously correct.

I didn't have a problem with the violence. It wasn't glamourised. It was aptly ugly and sadistic.bradavon wrote:His point that it's more moral to show a violent film violently is spot on. I wouldn't compare the infrequent (and plot necessary) brutal violence in The Killer Inside Me to the sustained, repellent torture in the frankly hideous Martyrs. I didn't think 'Killer' was a good film, but I found Martyrs a disgusting excuse for entertainment... and to call it 'a serious film' is surely some kind of joke?luckystars wrote:The reaction to the violence in Killer Inside Me reminds me of how overwhelmed people reportedly were watching Martyrs...drawing attention to the perverted viewpoint that Torture Porn type violence is only acceptable if its for 'fun' (Saw, Hostel etc.), and has no place played straight in a serious film.
