I didnt see that ending coming!
I thought at first afterwards maybe Vera Clouzot would survive (and the older woman would collapse - the film subverts this). Such an elaborate plan.

DOA: 3/5
Pretty good but felt more like a slow burning mystery than the fast paced film I imagined it would be, not that that is necessarily a bad thing.
It's all very 80's (it's a remake of a 1950's film) - from the soundtrack to the posh English baddies.
The performances aren't that great TBH.
The twist was quite good though and I liked the way the colour drained out of the film to represent the main character's loss of life.
Meg Ryan looked disturbingly young in this
Weirdly the movie seems to be set at Xmas time but may have been shot in the summer (!) The characters talk about the weather being very hot, the heat, etc.

Attack The Block 7.5/10
Story was a bit too much like someone like Joe Cornish had written it, and..well it probably needed a bigger budget (more time for filming - acting was a bit naff at times, and a tighter edit). Still a memorably entertaining film and quite funny in places. Characters, casting and use of soundtrack were great though. Good heart, and delivered a message without being too patronising. Good times

JACK FROST (1997) [direct to video]
As a child, looking round the video rental shop, I was fascinated by the holographic video cover for this - showing a snowman turning into a grinning skull! I wonder if any careless folk picked this up mistaking it for the Michael Keaton film released at the same time?
The film itself is a pretty daft attempt at a horror comedy, with an endlessly punning monster, a humourous lack of snow, and the remarkable, if not very nice, sight of a naked Shannon Elizabeth being raped by a giant snowman.
Yes, you did read that last part right.
4/10

Its title is the best thing about the film, one of the worst gialli I have seen so far.

I remember reading a review that claimed Michael Keaton's warm and fuzzy dead dad snowman was creepier... lol

I haven't seen it yet, but what's bad about it? My girlfriend seemed to like it, but she's got the hots for Rain.thelostdragon wrote:Ninja Assassin - 1/5

From the bits and pieces I saw it had some crappy unclear choreography, but lots of old-skool gory ninja slicing and dicing...
Batman: Year One
Based directly on the great Year One origin story by Frank Miller, the story was never going to be the problem here. It follows the book quite closely.
The problem lies mainly in all the other aspects of the movie. The voice-acting is mediocre at best, with Kevin Conroy either dropped or unavailable, we now get Ben 'WHO???' McKenzie delivering an uninspired boring performance, which sounds like it was phoned in. James Gordon is better (Bryan Cranston), but only slightly so. Everybody basically sounds like they've just come from a funeral. I'm guessing they're going for the 'film noir' approach, but it doesn't come of as intended.
Music is easily forgettable. I say this cause although it's less than 12 hours ago since I watched the movie, I have no idea if there was actually music.
Visually, it looks pretty damn poor. It takes it's angles straight from the comic-book, but artwork and animation isn't very good. Backgrounds are especially bland, boring and empty, and there has been no attempt to fix this with interesting shadowplay or colours. Pretty much the only slight highlights are the few action-scenes.
Now that Arkham City is (almost) out, and we've seen the gorgeous and fitting CGI trailer for that, it's a real shame they didn't hire that CGI team to do these animated movies completely in CGI. They could be writing history but instead have opted for just gambling on the appeal of the title alone.
Is it a bad movie? Ofcourse not. It's Year One and it stays too close to that to ever fuck up. However, the way it's been done is extremely disappointing, with poor voice-acting and bland and lazy visuals, so in no way is the movie any improvement over the great source-material. And that's a shame, cause the visuals in the comic weren't great either.
2.5 out of 5. Good story, lazy project.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Easily a **** (out of *****) movie, and certainly one of the coolest films I've seen in cinema this year. Grade-A mental insanity, with chainsaws, boobs, kung fu, gore... all kinds of good things

Clearly, if you don't like that opening scene... you can... you can... move in with Mark, dammitMarkgway wrote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeHql69jQyk
(ok, I admit the film may not be quite as fantastic if you watch it alone than if you watch it early in the morning in cinema with 200 other people... but come on! It's just great filmmaking!)

The presenter is annoying mind, and he bizarrely censors nudity, but not limbs being hacked off with chainsaws... but you can clearly see how awful, inept, and ridiculous the film is.
Fair play if you find it entertaining in a Plan 9 sort of way... but it's still shit.

The Spider Labyrinth (1988) - 3.5/5
Undiscovered gem of an Italian horror film reminiscent of Argento's Inferno and also reminded me of Door 3.
I've carefully taken screenshots of this film, check out how it looks more like the final installment of the Three Mothers trilogy than The Mother of Tears ended up like:
