I only paid a fiver for the current UK release so am not too upset... lol

Actually the film isn't a favourite of mine, nor one of Carpenter's very best.
It's slightly above average for the babysitter-in-peril sub-genre, but I can't figure out why it's remained so popular.

On a purely audio and visual level it's iconic

Story wise its goofy as hell, but an easy watch

Agree it's not one of his best

New version looks ridiculously dark which is a shame

It looks as it should, it's the UK disc that's boosted like setting your TV to Dynamic Mode or using a gamma mode like Black Stretch. The US one is absolutely the one to own.

Hmmm, the shout release doesn't offer any increase in detail over the old - which of course was infamously suspected to be an upconvert. Grain is fuzzy as hell - I assume they didn't/couldn't go back to the original negatives for this one? Otherwise I'd be happy with the Shout disc, it's a massive improvement over They Live in terms of contrast/brightness!

I don't think they make new masters from the negatives, they just work with what they are supplied with, and got Dean Cundey in to supervise this one. Even though it could be better if they struck a new master, overall it's just a great package, and a more faithful image than the UK disc so I shall definitely be getting it :)

Shout is the clear winner.
Original mono audio, loads of extras, and a superior, more natural image.
The brightness, contrast, and colours on the Optimum are too much.
The comparison really shows that to be true.
At a quick glance the Optimum appears very vibrant (caps #17 and 18 actually come across better) but it's an artificial representation.

Big Trouble In Little China coming out in the uk through Arrow later this year.....would have to something special for me to double dip though as i thought the usa disc was pretty solid transfer-wise.

wow, unexpected. I recall that being quite brutal.

Yeah, there's a couple of strong arm breaks, and a nasty back break, as well as some squishy eye gouging. Crunchy stuff, but you can get away with mucho violence in a '15' nowadays. Ferman is rolling in his grave.

I thought the back break was pretty vicious :D

From the BBFC Guidelines:
"...at 15 violence may be strong. It should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury, however"

Shitty quality... but you get the idea.

I'll hold my applause until Fox confirm the theatrical cut with original mono.

Sorry, but I'm so jaded now, I can't get enthusiastic without qualification.

It will be released in Germany first and then US will follow apparently..? I wouldn't mind if both cuts were released, as long as theres a choice of cuts in HD.

The Big Gundown (Grindhouse Release 4 Disc SE)
- http://www.diabolikdvd.com/category/Wes ... on%29.html

Interesting, it has not only the original IT version but a "Original Uncensored English Language Version, Newly Expanded With Three Additional Scenes"

Saw the IT version and found it dragging a bit. The shorter version might improve things, as is the case with Argento's Deep Red (the US version is notably better than the Italian cut)

And yes, this is the film with THE MUSIC

Looks interesting - could be expensive though....
THE music  always makes me think of Moon Warriors :D
Just noticed it says 'Optional English Bubtitles' :D
Wonder what 'special musical subtitles' could be? Translations/lyrics for the songs? :dontknow:

Synapse will release Suspiria on BD. This is excellent news, especially considering they will be doing new transfer from the original negatives:

Also, in case you missed the news, they did apparently very good job with Street Trash BD, for which they refused two completed transfers and pushed back the release date because they weren't satisfied with the quality that was offered to them. Gives hope that Suspiria will also get the treatment it deserves.

The worry with Suspiria will be how Synapse market it-their forthcoming Demons Steelbook is a limited run exclusive from them at $50 a pop.i imagine they'll have spent a fair whack getting the rights to this...the flipside is of course is this is a far more popular title than Demons and they could probably shift ten times as many, charge $25 and still make their profit.
