the same umbrella disc. taken with media player classic and upped as a png file.

Hmm, I don't have any experience with MPC for screengrabs, but I don't think it's considered a bad method, so it's possible your graphics card is processing these images and applying at least noise reduction and perhaps some dynamic contrast? Your screencaps for Knightriders also look noise reduced, but that could be mostly the transfer (even though early word seems to be positive?).

Compare this grab with your third one (brood3.png) notice how it has a little more grain rendered and more fine detail? Also the contrast seems a touch less harsh, but then it's not the exact same frame as your grab. In particular look at how the veiny pattern in the kitchen/hallway flooring is more defined in their screenshot compared to yours. I don't know if you use your PC to watch blu-rays at all, but you should be able to turn any processing (de-noising, dynamic contrast) off in the card settings if it's something you'd rather be rid of (I know some people prefer a little processing though).

It's not a big deal tbh, but in a borderline case like The Brood where the BD probably already looks a little clipped and a little noise reduced (or perhaps more in this case, not brilliantly compressed) it can make the difference!

Battle Creek Brawl is an obvious upscale.

Sam, what are the audio specs (for both films)?

Subtitles or dubtitles (for City Hunter)?

Compression is slightly better on the US (?) but they look very much the same.

Actually it's the HK one that looks better and doesn't have aliasing issues.

The HK BD seems to have more consistent grain structure, though I had to look really hard to spot any aliasing on the US BD. The colour timing is slightly different, also. Can't declare HK the winner until we know what soundtracks options are on the US disc.

HK wins video wise, audio wise... Well... Mickey Mouse sound effects as someone called them are present, unfortunately.

So is the US disc better audio wise?

Brawl has english 5.1 & 2.0.... Hunter has 5.1 cantonese & english... haven't had a chance yet to check for dubtitles #edit# checked a few scenes with the english audio/subs on...not dubtitles
