Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Remake)

First look at Rooney Mara:

http://geektyrant.com/news/2011/1/12/fi ... e-dra.html

What has she done? She looks every inch the character - which should be a relief to purists - but is no longer the pretty girl of A Nightmare on Elm Street. I don't find that look attractive at all - is it supposed to be?

Much props for the link!!

Rooney Mara is excellent in her small bur significant role in The Social Network. From those pics she's undergone a considerable physical change for the role!

I'm double interested in the film having enjoyed the original and being a massive Fincher fan.

I didn't realise Fincher was directing. It's such a rare treat (e.g - The Departed, not as good as IA but still decent) to see a great and proper director attached to a remake. Now I'm interested.

The director interests me more than the film. I never bothered with the originals.

She looks a total and utter skank beyond words. No way I want to watch her in any film looking like that freak, never mind across three films as the star! way to ruin a gorgeous young lady.

Wont bother with that film then, as frankly Fincher is a mess as well, talk about a not worthy of praise film maker. One great film in his life, the rest mostly pants and barley worth one watch.

Which one?

Surely that's the point Romero, no? Charlize Theron looked rough in Monster but it wouldn't have worked, if she didn't.

I don't want to look at the star of the trilogy for 6 hours+ at all if she is going to look like that, take from that what you may :D
Nor will most other normal people, unless the film company expects to toss cash away. A stars looks sell films, that's what its down too. Who wants to see repulsive main characters, not me at all.

Fight Club :)

He can be hit and miss, but Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, and The Social Network are all great films.

Is there a reason in the script why the lead character in the movie has to look butt-ugly!?

I mean, with Monster I can kinda understand it, because it's based on an actual existing fugly woman, but that's not the case with this movie, right!?

Also, it just astounds me that when they want an ugly lead character, they find a pretty guy or girl and ugly him/her up. What the fuck? Why not just hire a talented ugly actor/actress!? It's not like Charleze Theron is a brilliant actress or anything.

Likewise why does she have to look beautiful?

Seven is bloody fantastic, Fight Club is also very good. Zodiac is too slow and ponderous (I need to see it again) and Alien 3 is good.

I have yet to see Zodiac but I usually like serious crime thrillers and stuff about serial killers. I think it's because I can relate.

Ow, and I'm not asking for actors/actresses to look gorgeous either. I prefer them to just look the way they are, so unless the script asks for a gorgeous or a hideous girl/guy, don't change their look too much. Don't 'pretty' them up to make them look like fucking Cinderella, and don't put them 3 hours in make-up to make them look horrible.

Hey Yi, why do you type 'ow' instead of 'oh' just out of interest? It always sounds like you're in pain :D

The script doesn't call for it?

For me its odd all round making her look so repulsive (for want of a better word). Its a film, a BIG film, a franchise and an expensive one that hopes are very high for.
So can you think of any pretty big budget Blockbuster (that's what they are expecting from it) that has had an uglified lead character?
You cannot say Monster as that a tiny film that was never in a million years mainstream and made to make the big bucks. Same goes for the male equivalent that I can think of - The Machinist with Bale in full on skinny ugly mode, again small film not even close to a mainstream experience. Yes good films I am sure, but tent-pole Blockbusters?

I really cannot think of even one. The public are all about looks, that's the way we are and that will never change ever. If this was a small low budget affair then hey fine, but money is riding on this and if part one does not make it, then that's 2 and 3 never getting off the ground.

We have all seen smaller cast member's in films who you cannot stand to look at (character actors we all know and love), but 3 films packed with close ups of them? hard to swallow surely.

Maybe these images and her look are out to shock, so far so good it has worked. Still again do you want to look at that "look" for 3 full films? I really don't think I want her to look that way. I am not saying I will never watch it, but obviously people's looks make and break films or we would not have movie stars. We are fickle creatures and looks are a massive thing for many folk.

Or maybe I am wrong and that's just me :D and no one will care at all about her "look". I might be out of touch with style

Seems to me like they've just copied the distinctive 'punk' look of Noomi Rapace rather than come up with something original:

Alien 3 was good... Se7en very good... Fight Club I just didn't get at all. If someone would like to explain to me the point of that movie (clue- their isn't one) I'd be happy to listen. I think that's all the films of his I've seen. Zodiac sounds interesting... but Benjamin Button isn't my cup of tea.

Noomi looks lovely even with the look.

Rooney just looks like a crack addict that has lost 3 stone and went way to far with her look.

I'm having mini-orgasms when I get a sudden stroke of inspiration to write something, which explains the 'ow'...

Ow (ooow...ow yeah...owwww... gigity...), and I agree with Romero about having to look at a ugly main character for a whole movie, although obviously if the character's part is well written enough, and the acting good enough, then it probably won't bother me anyway...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Interesting. I was reading your other posts thinking 'romerojpg obviously hasn't seen the original'...

I kind of get you point - Noomi was amazing and made that part her own.

I'll wait to see if the remake turns her character from Punk Femme Fatale to Trailer Trash. I suspect it won't

B.t.w. I love Fincher, he's never made a weak film. His catalogue ranges from solid to masterpiece IMO

It does appear as though they've tried to make her even more extreme.

How she normally looks... very pretty IMO

So have you guys seriously not heard of The Millennium Trilogy? I'm not much of a reader myself but it's been the biggest thing in publishing since Dan Brown!! Looks like Fincher's Lisbeth is just an aggressive take on the book's description and probably inspired by the original film. Anyway, from Wiki:
Salander has red hair, which she dyes black. Upon her first appearance in the series, she is described as "a pale, anorexic young woman who had hair as short as a fuse, and a pierced nose and eyebrows. She had a wasp tattoo about an inch long on her neck, a tattooed loop around the biceps of her left arm and another around her left ankle. On those occasions when she had been wearing a tank top, a dragon tattoo can be seen on her left shoulder blade

It's probably because he's a super freak, super freak, he's super-freaky........

Noomi was still good looking and pretty in a dark way in the movie but Rooney looks awful, IMO.

Christ you people are superficial, this isn't a porn film, she's not there for you to get your stroke on, it's a hard-hitting thriller about the rape and murder of women!

Bunch of fucking 14yr olds! :D

It could be written this way in the book?

EDIT: It looks like it is.
Markgway wrote:Fight Club I just didn't get at all. If someone would like to explain to me the point of that movie (clue- their isn't one) I'd be happy to listen.
It's a thriller with one hell of a twist. I'd say that's it's point.
romerojpg wrote:Rooney just looks like a crack addict that has lost 3 stone and went way to far with her look.
She looks very underweight, not really the same thing :).

I don't understand your differing point of view just because these are mainstream or blockbuster films. Why is it acceptable to look grungy in an indie film but not mainstream? If the story calls for it, it calls for it.

Alien 3, who was it who directed that? :P
