Enjoyed the first one more than I expected.

Not blown away by the trailer, but it has potential.

Really didn't enjoy the writing on the first one. Not sure if I can be bothered to check a sequel

It was the character of Hit-Girl that bothered me about the original, now she's almost an adult so it's not such a big deal.

The expected endorsement from Chris Tookey:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/ar ... lence.html

This article is a shocker:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic ... lence.html

It tells me that Tookey has real psychological problems that require therapy of some sort.

I've seen countless violent action and horror movies over the last 25 years (from childhood) and would be shocked rigid if a murder or brutal assault were committed outside my house. I'm sure you guys feel exactly the same.

That this incident allegedly occurred 16 years ago doesn't tally with Tookey's whining that the BBFC have lost the plot (in 1997 the board was under Ferman's grip and the strictest censor in Europe). I wonder what Tookey could have seen back then in cinemas that so desensitised him to violence?

I know Tookey is a joke in the film community, but this is surely a new low?

"Films like Kick-Ass 2 and Only God Forgives are a very long way from being masterpieces. They're evidence of a sea-change in film-makers' attitudes towards violence, probably inspired by ultra-violent computer games"

HAHAHAHAHA! Nice going Dailymail!

Movie violence desensitises you to... movie violence.

Mark knows I watch and like some pretty extreme stuff.

Yet, when I read the news of the Mexican gang executing two people (don't see the spoiler yet, only later if you wish) with a chainsaw and filming it and posting on the internet... I tell you, do not look it up! I haven't seen the video, all I have seen is a screencapture from before the execution (that supposedly took place), and I could hardly sleep for several days. It's been several months since and I'm still struggling to forget it.

That is the difference. Movie violence, no matter how extreme, you still know it's just silly ketchup effects. Real violence - that's what's horrifying. Reading newspapers is what gives me nightmares - even after all the Human Centipedes or Serbian Films.

I always love to throw Japan at those who blame movies for violence. The country where Cannibal Holocaust beat E.T in popularity, Guinea Pig was a rental hit, and whose video games had to be censored for European markets, has always had some of the lowest criminality stats in the world. If you wanna draw stupid bullshit connections between movie violence and criminality, then Japan suggests the more violence you have in films and games the less criminality you will have. There's something for Tookey to analyze.

Sadly, as long as there's Z-grade trash tablods like Daily Mail, there's always gonna be a bunch of Tookeys. Not just in the UK. In Japan, too.

It's The Daily Mail, Tookey's one of their more reasonable journos! :D

You've got to love that 2nd article though, he's moaning about Kick Ass 2 and Only God Forgives but then states that graphic violence is OK in films he likes (Fight Club? I mean come on!). He also goes on to suggest that the people who post comments disagreeing with his opinion are part of the desensitised masses exhibiting "crude aggression". He's basically trying to make his argument sound infallible! :D

His article does beg one question though: If Tookey's been so desensitised by movie violence, why does he always get into a tizz whenever he reviews violent movies? Surely films like Kick Ass 2 should be water off a duck's back to one such as him by now!

The only reason I read Tookey's reviews is because he isn't bland (most paper critics are terribly dry) and - love him or hate him - he has an individual voice - but that article is self-important, insulting, woefully misguided drivel. No paper other than The Daily Mail - who seem to delight in media baiting controversy - would've printed it - except for a joke. If I'm not desensitised to true life horror - given the shit I've watched - why is he? Maybe he's the one with the problem, not us? I freely admit that I don't understand the appeal of torture porn (re. Tookey's famous ban this movie Hostel 2 rant) but does that mean those who watch it - whatever their reason - are desensitised to brutality and murder? I don't believe that. Nor do I believe that Kick Ass was designed to appeal to paedophiles (re. another bizarre rant). I don't like young children swearing or involved in graphic violence - but I hold that true of any film. Otherwise I had no issue with Kick Ass. And for my money Fight Club is every bit as pretentious and violent as Only God Forgives. One gets a five star review, the other should be banned? Really....?
