Don't underestimate the modern gaming consoles. They are more like multimedia consoles actually and they have good video and audio playback.bradavon wrote:Personally I'd never use a Games Console (except for the PS3) to play movies. It's just that the X-Box is damn loud. It even bothers me when I am playing games on it. Imagine watching a quiet film like "Dolls" or "Hana-Bi" on it.

Cool. I wasn't being in any way derogatory.Yi-Long wrote:Yeah... but I felt it was needed.
The xbox has pretty good videoquality. Better than my other dvd-players, and I only have 1 good quality scart-input on my tv, so I dont wanna keep switching cables all the time. So yeah, I watch movies on my xbox. And yeah, the Xbox is too loud and noisy. But my TV is sucky as well (sound-wise), so that helps...

I doubt that after the PS3 I will have a need for any stand-alone player.thelostdragon wrote:Don't underestimate the modern gaming consoles. Maybe in a few years we'll all have good-quality pc's functioning as mediacenters though.
I believe I can use this modded Xbox as a mediacenter as well, although not really sure how to do it.
The guy said something about a UTP cable and connecting it througha router to my xbox. But I think I'll have to wait till I have Vista to really take advantage of it, and I will probably have a PS3 at that time, so I'll probably use that as a media center instead.

The Xbox isn't a modern gaming consolethelostdragon wrote:Don't underestimate the modern gaming consoles. They are more like multimedia consoles actually and they have good video and audio playback.
Plus as a DVD Player they (as in pre-PS3 & Xbox 360) cannot compete to a dedicated High End DVD Player, such as the Pioneer DV-868Avi. Which I use and cost me £550. It was the top of Pioneer's range back in 2005.
I bet it doesn't have such things as HMDI 1080p up scaling, 24-Bit audio up conversion etc . . .
I wouldn't suggest everyone needs to go to the expense I did but you can do better than a Games Console, again I mean pre-PS3/Xbox 360. Even a £170 (sorry I don't know the Euro value) DVD Player is a million times better than a Games Console.
My brother used to use his PS2 and boy it sucked at even the basic DVD functionality. The remote he had to use was awful too.
The way you wrote "but". It's cool, it was just a lack of communication as we're basing what we say/mean on purely text.Yi-Long wrote:I didnt think you were. Why would you think I did?
Scart yuck. I couldn't go back to Scart for playing DVDs back now I've moved up in the world.Yi-Long wrote:and I only have 1 good quality scart-input on my tv, so I dont wanna keep switching cables all the time.
But fair enough. Millions of people do and for what it is it holds up well. It's way better than the god awful Composite or S-Video connections. I do use Scart for my PVR but that's only because 99% of Scarts in the UK are still Scart only.
I presume you mean it only has one decent Scart as only one is RGB equipped? I've never worked out why that is but it's one of the massive joys of moving to an LCD TV and having so many connections to work with.Yi-Long wrote:So yeah, I watch movies on my xbox. Personally I'd still use your DVD Player (even if it is basic) and get a Scart Splitter so both can share the same scart connection.

I have a scartsplitter but it would lose some of the quality, I think.
I'm looking into what I can/must do to connect my xbox to a HD(ready) TV, when the times come.
Just checked if it would run my anime, and it did
Looks gorgeous on a TV instead of on a monitor.
Sadly, when I tried playing Mario Tennis on it, it crashed. Maybe the emulator I picked to play it with, was the wrong one or something. Might try again 2morrow.

XBMC uses ffmpeg for DVD playback, which can upscale better than a majority of your uber-expensive DVD players. You are limited to 1080i and 720p over component though, that's a limitation the Xbox hardware.
It can compensate for overscan too. I don't miss out on any information when I watch my NTSC DVDs.

SCART RGB is pure shit, it can't do progressive scan. Use component - get an OFFICIAL Microsoft Xbox High Definition AV Pack off of Ebay.
Also the Xbox has a terrific sound processor, the Nvidia Soundstorm.

In december I posted I had won NHL08(360) in a competion. In January I still hadnt received anything so I posted about it on the site I won it from. Today I received notice that EA fucked up, and cant give me (or the other 2 winners) NHL08 anymore, as they only did 1 production-run of the game, but that I could pick and choose another game of my liking for the system of my liking...
... so I asked for Half-Life 2 OB for the 360

Just now I ordered a Medion PC, a q6600 with 4 GB ram and 1000 mb HD (2x 500).
It has a 8800GT 512 mb graphics card.
1000 euro total.
I was planning on waiting a little while longer, but this seemed like an OK deal. Might cancel the order later tonight if I find a better deal, or have 2nd thoughts.

Thanks man, and ofcourse I'll ask for your help when needed (although probably in the tech-thread, instead of through PM, as I'm not a big fan of PM's and e-mail etcEvaUnit02 wrote:Excellent specs Yi. You'll need x64 (64bit) Windows if you want to utilise all of your RAM though.
32-bit Windows can only use 3.25GB max.
If you need any help with anything then feel free to PM me.
And the OS is one of the main things that's worrying me. I have no idea if the OS is 64 bit or 32 bit. It doesnt say anything about it on the website. I'm affraid it might be 32 bit.
On the other hand, I hear that some programs hae problems with running on a 64 bit OS or something, so yeah, it's a bit of a dillema.

Retreat Through The Wet Wasteland (from yesasia)
The film that Nikkatsu was so afraid would cause a scandal (due to its police corruption theme) that they first tried to stop it from being made, and then added the word "wet" to the title to disguise the film as harmless pink. Or so I've heard.
