So, basically the BD is much sharper (of course), darker, more saturated and has the framing shifted slightly upwards. Although the SD appears brightness boosted I'm wondering whether the BD should be this dark and saturated?

The BD looks grainer too. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just not what I was expecting.

Haven't watched it on my projector yet, so it's difficult for me to comment.
It does look dark, though.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

I have the HD-DVD, any point in taking matching caps?

They likely just copy and pasted the same encode for both releases.

Yes, one cap would be nice.
Don't try to match the first one, though. It's in the middle of a shot.

BTW: seen it on the projector. Dark scenes are a bit too dark, but bright scenes are fine. Still, I don't know if Rio Bravo is supposed to look this colourful.
My biggest problem with this disc is that the sound is 0.025 seconds late throughout. But some people don't seem to notice.

I seriously doubt I'd notice a 0.025 second sync problem.
