TGP Tokyo Shock dvd coming January 13, 2009

The film is alright, could actually look better on small screen than it did in cinema

Tokyo Gore Police (Japan/USA, 2008)

Yoshihiro Nishimura's literally jaw dropping gore opus features some of the most impressive handmade special effects in recent memory. And plenty of blood (four thousand litres were used, according to the director). Audition's Eihi Shiina stars as an engineer hunter tracking down mutants who can replace body parts with deadly weapons such as chainsaws. Yes, it’s Blade Runner in red. Sometimes Nishimura tries too hard – the wrist cutting scene in the beginning being a good example – but he’s also got some sense of style; the main character drives an old Saab turned into a police car in the Shinjuku neon light jungle. Additional fun is provided by movie director cameos, including Takashi "I hate the Japanese" Shimizu, and Paul Verhoeven esque commercials (Suicide is kawaii!!, by Noboru Iguchi). All in all, it’s unbelievable Nishimura managed to shoot this all in just two weeks and with no time for rehearsals. Thrilling trash, just don't expect technical merits on other areas than special effects.

No better date for R2J Machine Girl than December 24.

What makes this 2 Disc release special is that it features, among other extras, a 20 min (?) short film Hajirai Machine Girl.

Hajirai stars the 20 year old gravure idol Noriko Kijima (not the Noriko Kijima that was in Legend of the Doll. EDIT. My bad, I think it is the same girl after all. I didn't remember she was that cute... I hope she has also learned to act cute... she was too wooden in Doll.) who was also in The Machine Girl.

Some retailers (kinokuniya, yesasia) are listing english subs for the R2J Machine Girl. Just ordeded mine. The Tin is limited. Cdjapan has one left...

I'll probably stuck this to my shelf and see if the film would hit a film festival near me next spring. I didn't really want to buy the film yet, but like I said, if you want the LE it's now or never. With Hajirai and subs included this should have some resale value as well, in case the film turns out bad.

More craziness, almost certainly not any good, but I'm posting in the lack of better things to do (:D). Check the second trailer.

Kaiju Shakedown has an interesting article on how difficult it was for the new company Pink Eiga to get their titles done and for distribution. Although I don't know where they got the idea to call Hiroki's Vibrator "Technically not a pink film, but close". Two sex scenes and a limited budget don't quite make a movie "close to pink".

TGP R2J is up for pre-order. English subs and dub should be included. Extras include a spin off feature as expected (actually titled "short collection", so it could be a bunch of short films), soundtrack CD and the usual stuff.

Meh, not that my hopes were all that high, but that surely was a disappointment. I want my forty minutes back. It's not like they even tried to tell a story, feels more like they had some action-footage for roughly 4 minutes and filled the rest of the time with long shots of people walking from point A to B or just some dull brooding. Gore-Effects were nicely done, sure, even the action was surprisingly watchable, but with no context or background it's just boring. Compared to this movie "Machine Girl" feels like the last half hour of "Transformers". And nothing against a good share of exploitation every now and then, but that tasteless baby-cruelty was as unneccessary as shit on a toast.

Thanks for the review. Nice to see someone writing about films that I haven't seen and are even interesting to read about.

One recent pink that I enjoyed is Watermelon (2004) by Ryuichi Honda. It's one of those related Fullmotion pink dramas (the films feature connections like same characters appearing in several films). It's about a woman who's so tired of men always staring at her breasts that she decides to hook up with the first man she encounters who doesn't pay attention to her breasts. This guy is played by one of the best and funniest Japanese actors, Nobuhiro Yamashita's reqular star Hiroshi Yamamoto.

Just on short notice:

The Dolby 5.1 Audio on the US-DVD of "Tokyo Gore Police" is a disappointment. Atrocious even. Bad enough to spoil the whole impression of the movie. It's lacking bass, punch, volume and homogeneity (when set into relation with soundeffects and voice). Luckily the Stereo 2.0 Audio is pretty good and comes with reasonable impact, so please, please, please give it a try. I've seen "TGP" in a cinema (with awesome sound), and it certainly has deserved better than that pity excuse of a Dolby-Mix that has been included on the US-DVD.

I'm gonna write a few words about the Japanese "Limited Gore Edition" as well, as soon as I hold the DVD in my hands.

The Japanese DVD arrived yesterday, and I'm sad to report, that Dolby 5.1 sounds as soft and badly mixed as on the US-DVD, and since the other Audio-Track only features an even worse English dub, my advice stays the same: go for the cheap US-DVD, which at least has the original Japanese Audio in a far superior Stereo 2.0 - Version available.

I'm still not through with them. Some of the short-films are actually pretty amusing, mixing the surreal, the sick and the downright stupid, but they're also kinda bland and shallow, and those images clearly haven't been processed, so that digital-look seems extra cheap. Plus they're not subtitled.

I'm already regretting the buy.

Terrible film. The story doesn't make sense, either; in fact "Sasori" seems more like a couple of stand-alone scenes glued together without connection. It's approximately 100 minutes of beautiful people moving around in pretentious slow-motion and endulging in stylized cliche-dialogue. It's not even exploitation. Just a flashy MTV-videoclip version of "Naked Weapon", but without those refreshing border-line insults in good taste. Some gratuitous cleavage shots, that's is, the rest of the action is a comicbook-interpretation of Wire-Fu, without timing or intensity. It's just people flying around without touching each other. Really, silly actually. Violence has also been severely toned down; it either takes place off-screen or is occluded by annoying camera-angles. And why the fuck do I need CGI for a still-shot of a cut-off leg sticking in a boot?

Btw. as far as I know this is a HK-Production.

I agree - is that the official US trailer? Some of those cheesy looking "subtitles" were misspelled (not totally uncommon, but...) and the voice over was horrible.
