I Spit on Your Grave (USA, 1978) – 2,5/5

"There is no other movie like this. You don’t see this movie, you experience it."

"Those who enjoy watching the rape scenes must be potential rapists."

"What did they expect a film about rape to be? Enjoyable to watch?"

"If you think of it as a cult classic you should be locked up."

"It is a gripping, intelligent, anti-rape movie."

"It is the most anti-feminine movie ever made."

"It is the most misunderstood movie in cinema’s history."

"It is the most vilified picture in cinema’s history."

Video nasties and banned cult classics rarely live up to their wild reputation. I Spit on Your Grave is an exception. Even today when torture porn has become mainstream entertainment, I Spit on Your Grave remains one of the most shocking motion pictures ever made. The ice cold atmosphere of the first third – where a New Yorker woman travels to sunny small town to spend her summer holidays – is partly created by exterior factors such as the film's reputation. The second third consists of what some critics have noted to be the longest rape scene in cinema's history – approximately 25 minutes altogether. It is the film’s most hated part. It is also the part praised by some critics... and feminists. Has there ever been a more disturbing rape scene in a movie? Has there ever been a more anti-male movie? There isn't a single likable male character in this movie. The film's final third is the revenge part. "This woman has just cut, chopped, broken and burned five men beyond recognition... but no jury in America would ever convict her!" Exploitation distributor Jerry Gross's new tagline for the 1980 re-release (uncut with a false R-rating, as opposed to the 1978 chopped up Day of the Woman version) sums up the last 30 minutes. It is the most conventional part of the movie. The main character is using her body to seduce the rapists and get even. "She truly enjoys being abused", someone said. But it's cold irony that the men die because they still can't refuse her body. They are horny idiots, rapists, scum. All of them, every man on the face of earth. Isn't that right?

I gave it an 4/5, not because I agree with the moral issues raised within the movie, but just because it's so effective. And that's all that matters when talking about an exploitation flick; they're beyond good or bad, they can only be effective or leave you cold. Just for the record: Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left" I thought was a piece of junk. Spoiled by awkward acting and unnecessary comical relief. Left me completely cold.

We've been hear many times before, Hung's rating system makes no sense but at least it's consistent.

25 minutes of rape. There's no way I'll be sitting through that. Not for any high and mighty reasons, it's just something I have less than zero percent interest in.

Torso 3/5

A pretty run of the mill 70's italian giallo is enlivened by a clever & well done final act at odds with the predictability of the earlier part of the film.

Street Kings BD 2.5/5

Ok corrupt cops thriller but it's nothing we haven't seen before,Keanu Reeves is ok and he's well supported by Forrest Whitaker and (Surprisingly) Chris Evans.Hugh Lawrie is given little to do.worth a watch but in no way a keeper for me.

Well, you seem to be a big fan of exploitation. You also say that ISOYG is an exception that proves the rule that exploitation films "rarely live up to their reputation" so that suggests its good. "ice cold thriller" sounds positive, as if you think thats what it sets out to be.

I said "Video nasties and notorious cult classics rarely live up to their reputation" as in that they are usually not as gory and stomach churning as the "video nasty" or "banned in 500 countries" tag would suggest. Perhaps that was a bit badly worded.

I'll edit my comments a bit

2,5/5. I agree about the bad acting. It really hurt some scenes. But it was a decently effective movie. I love the strikingly beautiful shower scene in the beginning.

I can't even remember a comic relief in the film anymore...

I quite liked this. Ended up seeing it by accident. I intended to go see Sweeney Todd, but I had been reading old schedules and it wasn't playing anymore. So I went to see Street Kings instead. 3 or 3½ out of 5. I remember it kinda fell between the ratings and I'm not sure which rating I eventually chose.

Probably better than Sweeney anyway. Sleepy Hollow was so bad I couldn't even finish it last time I tried.

Near Dark 3.5/5

Excellent vampire flick is given a less than stellar blu-ray.yes it's better than the dvd but still not that great looking, saying that a lot of it could be down to the film stock used. i'm no extras man but fuck not even a trailer!given the 2-disc dvd is loaded optimum could've at least carried them over.Optimum have some ace releases but they are a shit company.

Scary Movie 3 (USA, 2003) – 2/5
Not as bad as I feared. The parody doesn’t work of course (I believe I recognized all the victims despite not having seen any one of them) but it sure if funny when Charlie Sheen hits his head into a lamp.

The Hangover (USA, 2009) – 3/5
A comedy using the Reservoid Dogs structure. Set up for a wild night in Vegas, and then skip directly to the aftermath. What happened to the men’s memory, and who stole their buddy? And whose baby is in the closet? Not quite as funny as I expected, but it’s a pleasure to see a decently written comedy for a change. The humor is based on the film long storyline, rather than unrelated gags like most comedies nowadays. The baby is alright as well, mostly just sitting down quiet, not requiring diaper change or any other stupid shit.

Deep Blue Sea (USA / AU, 1999) – 3,5/5
Alien (Resurrection) with sharks. Scientists develop super intelligent sharks in an underwater research facility and are thrown to the bottom of food chain when the corridors start flooding. The three sharks are quite a bit more intelligent than the three screenwriters that worked on the storyline, but that’s doesn’t sink the film. Renny Harlin’s directing is excellent, keeping the tension up flawlessly. There’s also some good, dumb humour. The film is relatively simple, but that is its strength. It’s a genre pic with a focus, a theme that is exploits for full 100 minutes. One of the worst things to plague modern action cinema is over-packing; there’s too much content and too much variety. The outcome will be forgotten in days. Deep Blue Sea is is different. It may not be a masterpiece, but even years after you will still remember it was the film with intelligent sharks.

Outlander - 3.5
Surprisingly fun even if the storyline is a bit rediculous. Decent acting, good directing, good CGI...that's all I ask for in a sci-fi flick.

Blade II - 4/5
Very good sequel. Actually trumps the original in my opinion.

shooting aces 4/5
No brain required, all out action film. Guns, bullets and people being shot, that's what it is all about. Gratuitous violence throughout. Enjoyable if you like that sort of thing (I do).

Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street 4/5
Surprisingly liked this. I generally (always) don't like musicals, but maybe cause this one was in a tone and a style that was more to my tastes, I actually did. Comically gory, poster paint red blood, and a ok story, but the dark tone and subject matter make it quite compelling.

Resident Evil: Extinction 2.5/5
So-so. Some gore, some zombies, a thin plot and a completely open ending. Not a patch on part 2, which was better than part 1.

Battlestar Galactica - The Entire Series 5/5
Possibly one of my favourite TV series of recent times, and considering I really like Lost and 24 as well, that isn't a bad achievement. Good story, seemingly few filler episodes, some twists and shocks that you don't always see coming, good acting... An intelligent sci-fi that should appeal to non-scifi people.

Blade 2 is easily better than Blade. Blade 3 is rubbish. Sweeney Todd is also excellent. I do like musicals though.
