Mozilla Firefox 3.5: RELEASED!

Post by bradavon »

Info and what's coming in 4.0 can be found here:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10275396-2.html

Get it at www.mozilla.com or by clicking on "Tools" and "Update". If you're still running v2.0 you'll need to download it from Mozilla.com.

Firefox 3.7 mock ups:

Firefox 4.0 mock ups:

3.7 looks so much better than 3.0-3.5.

Firefox 3.6 RC released, RTM by end of month:

Firefox 4.0 is now due Q4 2010 :(. Pity Firefox needs "tab memory separation" and the new look. Firefox 3.5 does look outdated. Given how fast Chrome is progressing, I may not even be using Firefox by Q4 2010.

I now use some extensions on Chrome. 'Invisible Hand' is a cool one that tells me if an item is cheaper elsewhere, its only shortcoming is that it doesn't yet support Play.com, but they assured me that's coming soon. I also use Google Translate, Similar Pages, Quick Scroll which helpfully takes me straight to the relevant paragraph on a website when I've searched for something specific, the eBay extension to keep an eye on my bids, and a couple of others are installed which I haven't used yet (RSS, Google Checkout Promo Notifier, and Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer).

Nice! It sounds like Chrome 4 is progressing nicely.

I'd definitely install an Adblocker. It's a must IMO. So many sites are cluttered with adverts, such as Facebook. Have you tried Chrome 4's Bookmark sync or do you only have one? This should sync bookmarks across PCs, via your Google account.

Firefox has X-Marks add-on (also out for Chrome but I wonder if it's needed), to sync bookmarks for my work PC. It's so incredibly useful.

Can't say that I've noticed much difference in FF3.6.

Can't say that I care much for persona skins either. Most are garish eyesores, that are too busy. You have to wade through hundreds of shit ones to find anything halfway decent, it's like looking for a media player skin.

Oddly I wasn't offered it automatically. I had to click Tools and Update.

I totally agree. I always use the default Firefox Theme. They too all look hideous. I don't get the IE ones. Why would I want Firefox to look like Internet Explorer? Persona's look like Themes. I guess they cover up even more of Firefox.

A review: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=6836

I had to bump the MaxVersion date in two of my extensions XPI files (then reinstall) but that's easy enough to do and I've had to do it before.

When you look at the Personas, if you highlight over one (if running FF3.6), it will appear over the top. So you can see what it would like, if installed. That's handy. All so far look dreadful.

Personas look identical to themes in FF3.5 and prior, just renamed. When you click "Get more Themes" in Firefox it now takes you to the Personas page, instead of the Add-ons Theme page. I never bother with Windows themes either, same reason.

"What's the difference between a Firefox theme and Personas for Firefox?

Themes change the appearance of Firefox. A Persona is a special type of theme that changes the look of your browser without changing the navigation buttons, toolbars, and menus. Until now, to apply a theme you needed to install it and restart your browser, like with extensions and other add-ons.

Now, with Personas you can instantly preview a design and install it in one click without needing to restart. All original themes are still available through addons.mozilla.org."

WOW! Massive difference then. The fact you have to restart for a theme, is hardly a big deal. The fact it doesn't change buttons etc... is such a small difference. Work on updating the UI (it's way behind the look of IE and Chrome) instead Mozilla!
