(added a few more features to the list after grim's post... karaoke, gamecube, disco lights...)

It's from 10pm to 10 am. Of course you can check in earlier and check out later, but you'd be paying by hour for that, and you'd double the price in 4 hours. As stated, it's a love hotel, not a tourist hotel. But I do think it's amazing value for money just for its purpose. For the same price you could go to business hotel and get a room so small you'd have to back to the corridor when you wanna turn around.

Here's a couple of pictures from a different room from the previous visit. Same rate.

As you can see, these rooms are not sleazy at all, but very romantic and fun.

allright, I wrote a law class final paper on love hotels, so here's a few answers to the questions before.

The Public Morals Law
Love hotels used to be a gray area of business until 1985. In legislative terms there was no distinction between love hotels and ordinary hotels, though it was obvious to everyone these were two very different breeds of hotels. Love hotels were seen as seedy and potentially dangerous places with possible connections to the organized crime and an ambiguous legal status. Some people also held worries about love hotels established near public institutions such as primary schools.

To address these issues, the 1985 legislation classified love hotels as sex industry. Sex industry is regulated under the Public Morals Law. As a result, love hotels would be subject to various restrictions such as zoning (only allowed in designated areas) and collaboration with the officials.

Outcomes of the 1985 Law
What initially seemed like a victory for love hotel opponents, turned out to be the exact opposite. It has been argued that the love hotel industry hit a new high as a direct result of the new legislation. Two outcomes were especially notable:

1) Extralegal Love Hotels
In order to apply the law, an official definition for love hotel had to be set. This was done by applying a (highly insufficient) set of conditions, such "there are oversized mirrors in the ceiling" or "there is no front desk". This turned out to be a grave mistake. The love hotel industry now knew what does not constitute as love hotel (in legal terms), which allowed them to escape the harmful "love hotel classification" by making small concrete changes to the premises, such as removing oversized mirrors. These hotels became known as extralegal love hotels - they are every bit love hotels, but they operate free from the restrictions posed on love hotels because the law fails to identify them as such.

2) Industry Reputation
What used to be a sleazy and legally ambiguous industry, now had the official government approval. People were no longer afraid to enter love hotels, especially female customers. As an unintended result of the law, the industry's reputation was greatly polished, boosting its popularity among normal couples.

2011 Legal Revision
In 2011 the Public Morals law was revised in order to address the loop holes mentioned before. A new, two part definition process for love hotels was established. It now included both hotel structural (e.g. insufficiently small lobby, possibility to enter and pay without facing the staff etc.) and room (oversized mirrors, rotating beds, payment machine etc.) features. Certain conditions from both categories must come true before the hotel can be legally declared as love hotel.

Outcomes of the 2011 Law
The purpose of the 2011 revision was expose extralegal love hotels to the law. Some people estimated this might close half of Japan love hotels. These estimations appear to have been grossly exaggerated. Some hotels have been forced to accept love hotel classification, however, these hotels appear to have stayed in business at least so far. It may be that the 1985 principle of love hotels already in operation being excluded from the zoning restrictions (even if next to elementary school) is still applied. Furthermore, most of the news originate from Osaka area, which is where the national Fake Love Hotel Removal Group is based. However, it is up to the local governments to decide on whether or not, and how harshly, to pursue the zoning principle.

There has been a lot of criticism on the law. Some scholars see it old fashioned to distinct between normal hotels and love hotels. Love hotels are such a huge industry that it makes more money than anime. More than half of all sex in Japan is estimated to take place in love hotels. The industry has been strictly mainstream since the 1990's, when love hotels became a trendy phenomena among young couples, and many magazines ran popular articles on love hotels.

One of the motivations for the law was preventing under age sex -prostitution, adult video shootings, casual relationships - from taking place in love hotels. Anonymity is one of the principles of love hotels - you don't see the staff, you pay by the machine, and even the entrance is often a bit hidden - making love hotels potential scenes for under-age sex. However, were love hotels targeted, the crimes might just move to ordinary small hotels who don't usually confirm the customer's identity. It would be easy to check in as "father and daughter" with fake name in many of the places.

Fears on Extinction of Love Hotels
This refers strictly to old school love hotels - not to extralegal love hotels. The fears are justified - between 1985 and 2005 there was apparently not a single new love hotel registered - all new entrants were extralegal love hotels. This means the new hotels were toned down in terms of interior, however, they have also made love hotels a booming mainstream business. Many ordinary Japanese people don't even know about the classification struggle.

Another reason for the toning down has nothing to do with legislation, but the fact that love hotels have become a major hit among female customers. It is up to 80% of the time that women choose which hotel to use. This is why the industry is now catering for female customers, emphasizing the romantic aspects and offering luxury and "fun" (karaoke, Playstation, hair and skin products, wines, sushi, 50 inch TV, etc.) that ordinary hotels could only dream of.

This being said, the old school love hotels are becoming rare in Japan. This could, however, change in the future. With many love hotels (at least in Osaka) being forced to accept the love hotel classification, new entrants could just as well go all the way and become genuine love hotels if they expect they have to carry the stamp anyway. For old hotels it’s more complicated. At least in 1985 they applied the principle that existing love hotels were exempt from the zoning rule, however, rebuilding / redesigning would subject them to reclassification. This is why many old love hotels have been dying as the law "prevented" renewals.

And finally, a bit more empirical research  This one is certainly a real, registered love hotel, not an extralegal one.

A couple of other legal aspects to clear

Age of Consent
The age of consent in Japan is commonly mistaken as 13 by foreigners (thanks to wikipedia). This is true only in theory, probably never in practice. The national law sets the minimum age of consent at 13, however, local legislation over-rules it. In practice, the age of consent in most prefectures is around 15 or 16, sometimes even higher. Furthermore, the age of consent is only valid when both parties are underage. When the other one is an adult, the age of consent automatically becomes 18! The belief that in Japan adults can have sex with high school girls legally is completely false...

... except if they can prove in court that they love each other. The Japanese law knows multiple cases where the accused have managed to convince the jury that their relationship was all about love, and sex only came as a side product (e.g. their relationship included going for dinners, road trips, playing tennis together etc. rather than just love hotel visits), hence they were found not guilty of breaking the law!

Prostitution
Prostitution is illegal in Japan, however, the law only defines prostitution as vaginal penetration. Nothing else is defined as prostitution. This is why Japan is full of legal prostitution (or non-prostitution, as they would say) such as soap lands (bath house with extra services), image clubs (themed & cosplay prostitution mostly focusing on blowjobs) and delivery health (call girl) that all stop short of penetration. This is only part of the reason why Japan has become "the country with the strangest forms of prostitution".

Image

Enjo kousai (compensated dating), JL Rifure, etc.
Practicing businesses that “aim to offer clients sexual consolation and entertainment” is forbidden from under 18 year olds. There is constant cat and mouse game between the authorities and various businesses, such as JK Rifure (which is a more narrowly defined version of enjo kousai, offering clients high school girls who simply lie next to them), on what constitutes to sexual consolation and entertainment. JK rifure was outlawed from under 18 year olds earlier this year after remaining legal for a short while.

Enjo kousai is a bit tricky - although it is often mistakenly referred as high school girl prostitution, it really is a "compensated date". Not nearly all of enjo kousai include sex - it can be just having dinner together, or going to karaoke - nor are all enjo kousai practitioners underage (the age of the girls can vary between junior high school and university). There is rarely an active third party involved in enjo kousai, except for a website or other service that allows girls to leave their "advertisement". The enjo kousai girls are not victims of pimps, but culture - they are usually selling themselves simply because they want to buy a new Gucci bag or other accessories. They go to karaoke for 2 hours with an old guy and they can make the same amount of money as a week's part time job. If they decide to have sex with him, it's a month's part time job's salary in one evening.

Usually when the police catches enjo kousai activity, the customer gets fines or arrested, and the girl walks away after being educated about the dangers of enjo kousai. It's much more of a social problem than criminal problem.

Side note: if you haven't already, you should watch two excellent movies on enjo kousai: Hideaki Anno's Love & Pop (1998) (my old review) and Masato Harada's Bounce ko gals (1997).

Haha. Though in all honestly, life is not all ninjas and maids in Japan either. Except maybe if you live in Akiba.

Speaking of which, I was in Tokyo the other weekend, on my way to Kamata to see Red Peony Gambler on 35mm, and at Akiba station a girl carrying a teddy bear bigger than herself enterted the train.

Why have young people in Japan stopped having sex?
- 61% of unmarried men and 49% of women aged 18-34 were not in any kind of romantic relationship
- 45% of women aged 16-24 "were not interested in or despised sexual contact

Every once in a while the lack of English skills over here gets totally surreal! Go to a local small town dance festival and see 7 year olds dance to Busta Rhymes' "Where's My Money". The children, their parents and the instructors who chose the music ain't got a bloody clue what the lyrics mean :dontknow:

Better have my bread nigga I ain't playin
Bitch, where my fucking money?
Mark every word, spoken reddish so your pussy
If you think I'm jokin?

Christmas not really being the family celebration in Japan that it is in the West, many Japanese couples go to love hotel instead! You may have to settle for a more crammed room during the Christmas season. But, what better way to enter your blazing red room that with Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence playing in the room stereo!

Image

Notice there's two TV's in the room: a small one near the bed, and a large one in front of the couch.

And, what better way to start a new year than in love hotel! New Year being the family celebration in Japan, you'll find plenty of room in love hotels, such as this genuine love hotel room filled with huge mirrors in the walls as well as in the ceiling above the bed!

Or how about a room with a swing? :D

JP Cinemas round up post

This is mostly stuff that I've already posted in other threads, but I just wanted to bring them here into one post

Part 1: Horror film audiences in Japan

Gotta love Japanese horror movie audiences. In You’re Next the audience consisted of me, a cute girl in her 20’s, and a sweet looking granny. For a moment I thought I had come to the wrong screening... In Frankenstein’s Army there were the usual pretty high school girls who were taking photos of the film’s character posters after the film. Still can’t believe Frankenstein’s Army was rated only 15 in Japan…

I love how many female viewers horror films in Japan attract. Human Centipede 2 - which played on the largest screen of a small multiplex had quite solid female attendance. Zombie Land, some years ago, was packed with young women who came for a girls' night out. Even roman porno retrospectives attract random female viewers, including cute students.

Part 2: Laputa Asagaya!!!
This a small theater screening only Japanese movie retrospectives. Program consists of morning show (usually rare comedy and drama classics from the 50's), daytime screenings (large retrospectives usually focusing on films from the 60's) and late show (genre films from karate to yakuza and pinky violence. All films screen from 35mm (or 16mm) film. The best movie theater in Japan!!!!

Last month I dropped by again at my favorite cinema in Tokyo: Laputa Asagaya. This time they were screening a Rare Nikkatsu films (action, comedy, drama) from the 50's and 60, and a Female Prisoner Retro with a combination of Toei, Nikkatsu and Daiei films.

Love the moody area with small streets

Also found time to catch Red Peony Gambler on 35 mm... in a charming 150 seat theater in Kamata screening it 5 times a day for 7 days in their only screening room. Honestly, I don't understand how they can stay in business, but I'm happy as hell they do

Dropped by in my favorite movie theater last weeked for Etsuko Shihomi retro. Tokyo's Laputa Asagaya. A lovely small theater running nothing but retrospectives. Morning and afternoon slots are filled with more or less respectable 50's/60's stuff, and the evening slot is dedicated to Toei karate/pinky violence/yakuza/etc. stuff. This week they were playing Blind Beast (Yasuzo Masumura retro), A Certain Killer (Raizo Ichikawa's Daiei Noir) and 13 Steps of Maki (Shihomi retro)

Image

Image Image

Image

My favorite movie theater Laputa Asagaya (in Tokyo) had both Sukeban Deka movies screening on 35mm in December in the late show. I only had a the change to catch Kazama Sisters, but what a pleasure it was. As usual, the walls of the cosy small theater were decorated with Sukeban Deka posters and articles, the post card shelf was full of Yoko Minamino, Yui Asaka, Yuma Nakamura and Yuka Onishi cards, and the Sukeban Deka soundtracks were played in the lobby and in the screening room between screenings.

Part 3: Pink Cinema!

Dear God, I think I've found the coolest movie theater on the planet!!! Tokyo's Shimbashi Bunka, which screens pinku triple features, including Roman Porno...

Let me quote someone:

"To gain admittance you first must visit a vending machine that sits unceremoniously in front of the theater. By purchasing your 1,100 yen ticket you can stay as long as you wish through a triple bill ... After you’ve purchased your ticket from the vending machine you ironically have to hand it over to the guy working at the ticket window. After he wishes you a merry wanking, the real adventure begins.

Walking into the 81-seat theater is like walking into the movie room your middle school might have had. It’s tiny, but extremely comfortable, aside from the fact that there are around ten to fifteen old men staring at a screen with a women being taken from behind on it. The 35mm film is being projected so close behind your head that you can almost feel the heat from the bright light bulb inside of it.

The sound system, which has not only the marching sounds of the 35mm projector to compete with, but also the frequent trains running over head, which literally rock your seat, is passable to say the least, with the right side speaker dominating the left, turning the room a weird aural experiment that will likely leave you a bit dizzy.

The bathroom is mockingly positioned to the immediate right of the large screen, meaning that if you want to get up to play with your bits and pieces everyone is going to see you making a run for it. Thankfully the old men are beyond such embarrassments, as they willing hobble towards the bathroom, cane in hand, with the utmost dignity, only to stumble out four minutes later looking a tad defeated."

Planning to drop by there next week when they're screening:
- Trap of Lust (Atsushi Amatoya, 1973)
- Love Doll Report: An Adult Toy (Chusei Sone, 1975)
- Assault! Jack the Ripper (Yasuharu Hasebe, 1976)

Image Image Image

My plane better be on time or I will march to the cockpit and tell them to speed the fuck up or I'll miss my porno!

Nikkatsu triple feature, here I come!

Image
- http://www.cinema-st.com/classic/c005.html

(a few week later)

As expected, Shimbashi Bunka was worth every yen. In addition to what was mentioned before, I got to witness:

- An old man whose hand started making suspicious movement during the first and second sex scene in Trap of Lust. I dared not take a closer look

- The same man leaving the theatre and mumbling something, obviously irritated, after the film turns into a Seijun Suzuki style killer/spy metafilm instead of pink flick.

- Audience members falling asleep after the fore mentioned twist

- An audience with average age around 55 - and not a single woman...

- ...until one female entering the theatre in male companion for the second screening

- The poor lady falling asleep with her palm covering her face during Assault! Jack the Ripper

- An elderly man leaving for bathroom during the film, and another man entering and taking his place meanwhile. 25 minutes later the men start arguing (during the film) whose bag belongs to who – both had placed their bags on the same seat without realizing it.

All this with one 1300 yen film ticket (that gives you entrance to the theatre – you can stay as long as you want). And of course, seeing this films in 35mm is a joy in itself!

There's a mainstream theater next door

That depends on the price, I suppose

Human rental's been a solid business in Japan for a long time. It's better known as enjo kousai (compensated dating) and exists in all kinds of variations (e.g. JK Rifure) with different official terms. High school girls make tons of money with it.

Some foreigners are quick to jump into conclusions and consider it prostitution, but most girls engaging in it never have sex with the customer. Lonely Japanese men are willing to pay hundreds of bucks just to hold hands with a high school girl or to go to karaoke with her.

Of course the police is trying to make it illegal, but the industry keeps coming up with new variations that are not (yet) addressed in the law. And it's problematic because it's the girls themselves who want to sell themselves. It's not like they're forced into it. Dinner + 3 hours in karaoke, no sex, with a slimy businessman equals to 2-4 week's part time job in terms of revenue.

When it doesn't include sex, and the "service provider" is over 18, it's fully legal. Hostess clubs (and these days, host clubs, too, for women) are mainstream entertainment in the business world. Salarymen paying to chat with girls at the club... In a little sleazier places you can even touch their breasts.

Japanese wives and girlfriends don't complain. They take it as a law of nature that all men go to such places, even when married. Oddly enough, I'm the one who's trying educate Japanese girls not to tolerate that kind of shit from their boyfriends / husbands.
