Wasn't it called Real Ghostbusters because there had been an earlier cartoon series made by Filmation titled Ghostbusters?Markgway wrote: I never understood why the were the REAL Ghostbusters either? I mean, Real compared to what -- the phonies in the movie? The characters were the same.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
Actually that is an easy answer (though IMDB does get it partially wrong.) There was an older cartoon by Filmation that had a cartoon by the name of Ghostbusters (made because of the movie, but they had the rights to the name from a previous series in the 1970s.) The Wiki article below has the information. But I remember watching both cartoons at the time and at first being confused on what the heck this "other" cartoon was. The Real Ghostbusters was easily the better of the two.Markgway wrote:...I never understood why the were the REAL Ghostbusters either? I mean, Real compared to what -- the phonies in the movie? Found out; never had it again.
I still think Fried Mars Bars are an elaborate practical joke...
I wouldn't try one on a dare.

Boxing coach Bob Hope has to train a new champ (puny Mickey Rooney) when he's duped into enlisting in the army. Mediocre vehicle for Hope has nowhere near enough laughs. I didn't hate it, but that's hardly a recommendation. AKA: Military Policemen.

That's pretty cool that you got to see this in the theater (jealous here), especially with a 35mm release. I'm more of the 5/5 mindset for the film (EDIT: same with Drive as I just reread your good 4.5 review) , but then again I have seen it several times (but not in the theater.) A film I quote probably too much. One of the more influential films of all-time. This has certainly been written about many times (including myself) so I do wonder what new things could be said about the movie.HungFist wrote:Shimbashi Bunka Final Weekend
Taxi Driver (USA, 1976) [35mm] – 4.5/5
No need to comment on the film, everyone knows how great it is, so just a few words about the screening. There were exactly 30 screenings held in 10 days, and even then the one I attended played that 120% capacity, that is, about 20 people were standing. They came even knowing they can’t get a seat. Fantastic atmosphere!

Knock on Wood (1953-USA) **½
Danny Kaye is a ventriloquist caught up in espionage in Europe.
Not bad vehicle, some laughs... probably not one of his best.
The Victim (2011-USA) *½
Michael Biehn stars, writes and directs this grindhouse wannabe.
According to the credits we have Robert Rodriguez to thank for this.
Gee, thanks Rob!

My favorite Danny Kaye is easily The Court Jester, though there are several that I like quite a bit like White Christmas and Hans Christian Anderson.Markgway wrote:Knock on Wood (1953-USA) **½

I am probably going to get Knock of Wood (if available) for my Mom this Christmas.

A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014-USA) ***
Dark, gritty thriller featuring a typically solid Liam Neeson performance, here playing a cop-turned-detective who investigates a series of nasty kidnap murders. Not an action movie, so those expecting Taken 3 look elsewhere.

It was a film I ended up liking. I'm happy I did not see the trailer beforehand. The biggest complaint I got on the film was "it was not action ..." So to anyone who had not seen it I told them think of it as a detective film (noirish) first do not think of action. Of course the film starts off with than interesting action piece (which we understand more on later in the film.)Markgway wrote:A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014-USA) ***

I was glad I got to see this in the theater. Once again supporting the old guys.

History and geography take a battering in this entertaining Hollywood adventure nonsense. Kevin Costner's Robin hails from California, but, hey, he's Costner so it's cool! I saw the extended cut, which explains a couple of things, but frankly the move works better without them.

Decent widescreen giallo with Fabio Testi is spare on ketchup - though the motive/killings are sexually nasty and liable to put off uninitiated viewers.

Humans only use 10% of their brain. What happens when Scarlett Johansson is able access 100%? Shit happens, that's what! Luc Besson's pulpy sci-fi thriller has an interesting and provocative premise, but too little action and too much SFX for my taste.

My Favourite Spy (1951-USA) **
Weakly plotted Bob Hope vehicle; a few minor laughs, but pretty mediocre given its potential.
Blue City (1985-USA) **
Second-rate thriller with Judd nelson avenging his father's murder. Dopey, but watchable.

Ex-gang member Adam Baldwin is targeted for extermination by his old boss (a drug-dealing psycho, natch). School violence is always an exploitation winner and if you liked Class of 1984...
In the Mood (1987-USA) ***
Charming nostalgia piece with Patrick Dempsey ideally cast as the sweet teenager who runs off with older women.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
Most of the films you watch recently I've never heard of (ok, most of the films I watch no one has ever heard of either ). Just wondering is there a logic/pattern to how you choose most/many of them (e.g. they're in some specific VoD selection or rental shelf) or are they all films you've been wanting to see for a long time for random reasons?

It's a mixture of films I've wanted to see for a while and trawling thru the IMDB search by year. I find that you get more variety that way and sometimes the best surprises are the ones you hadn't heard of or considered.HungFist wrote:Most of the films you watch recently I've never heard of (ok, most of the films I watch no one has ever heard of either ). Have you ever watched a film (or not watched one) because of a review I've given? If you want to know more on a title just ask...

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1987-USA) **
Exactly what it says on the tin!
As silly as it sounds, but there's some imagination at work.
These Klowns aren't scary (your average circus clown is more sinister) but it's played purely for laughs anyways... and it's got John Vernon being a bastard.
