Did anyone see this? (I think it was on Channel 5 on a Thursday)? Quite interesting.
It seemed to suggest James Ferman was a more liberal BBFC President than people think he was, sure he heavily cut films like Temple of Doom, Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer etc, but I was surprised when it was revealed he wanted to see a more relaxed attitude when it came to sex/porn movies. There was a really cheesy spoof one called "Batbabe" or something which apparently upped what you could show at the 18/R18 cert. In the 80's R18's were EXTREMELY tame looking at them now.
Now those porn spoofs of big films are made all over - Spiderbabe (2003), Lord Of The G-String (2001) etc
Also I had to laugh when the Mediawatch guy was justifying The Evil Dead being cut (or was it banned?) in the 80's. The effects (even in the 80's) were VERY cheesy (due to the low budget nature of the film, not when it was made!) Had Raimi and the makers had more money they could have afforded better effects if they wanted!
On the other hand, at the end they seemed to say it is really relaxed now - "Want a video nasty (Evil Dead) - in Aisle 2" They also showed the covers of Straw Dogs (1971) and Quiet Days in Clichy (1970), both fully uncut now and both previously cut by the BBFC. I didnt like QDIC much though.
On the other hand again Baise-Moi ("Fuck Me") which they also showed is still cut by the BBFC. Ai No Corrida was never cut AFAIK on DVD, just reframed.

Well I thought it was pretty crap from start to finish, famous or not, when I saw the R1 a few years back The plot about the sexual awakening of the young woman (Slyvia Kristel) is very banal (maybe it was something new then) and the music is terrible. Maybe I dont like 70's lounge music
Its marginally better when seen in French as opposed to English though.

I guess its not a bad film in its genre. You may want to check out the Anchor Bay Boxset (with ujncut prints of Emmanelle 1, 2 and 3) which is by far the best DVD of the film, I only saw the R0 US Winstar DVD, original language (French) but the picture is in the wrong ratio, from a worn print, is only letterboxed and looks crap!
Maybe I'll check out the AB set one day.
