Disc 1: Movie Disc
Format: BD-50 (41.1 GB)
Region Free
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen (1080p)
Audio: Japanese LPCM 2.0 (1536 Kbps)
Subtitles: Japanese HoH

Disc 2: Extras
Format: DVD-5
- "Special Making of" (32 min)
- First Screening (18 min)
- Stage Greeting (7 min)
- Premiere (14 min)

The extras are pretty basic stuff, but the film transfer, to my bad yes at least, looks pretty damn great. The first press comes with a beautiful cardboard sleeve to house the ugly blue case, so get it while you can! I'll translate my Finnish film review when I have time.

Front --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paper sleeve back (we'll let the real back cover be a surprise)

I'm guessing there are no plans for the movie to be released in the west? Trailer looked very nice, and the screengrabs look great as well...

Possible, but unlikely.

in another thread there's a mention that suggested to me there might be a subbed version of this around, or am i misreading it too hopefully?

btw, although western releases of decent J films are rarer and rare these days, i often hold out hope for another asian country to pick up on decent stuff, and it seems more genuinely connected to what's being made in japan these days, rather than more and more manipulative of the nature of what the industry appears to be as a whole. keibetsu has a korean release / license, for example, so although subs on J films for dvd there are also rare, there's still the slightest chance...

Probably you are. I haven't heard anything about subs, official or fan based... That being said, I haven't been looking for them, and Hiroki is a fan sub favorite, so I wouldn't be surprised to see an srt appear sooner or later...

Oh, and was this included in this year's Nippon Connection program? Might have seen it mentioned in one of their facebook updates...

To be honest, Keibetsu was a bit of a disappointment to me... not a bad movie, but clearly too long and with too much countryside drama which really isn't what I'm looking from a Hiroki film. Love the Tokyo parts and Anne, though...

have to hang on for a korean release and see if that gets subbed then.

not sure if this is at NC, but i have what seems to be similar memories about it being mentioned.

personally, i think hiroki is one of the more obvious (to me) exponents of what makes for a more representative kind of director to be working in middling obscurity within the J film industry. he's popped up and done a few more commercial films in the last few years, but the only one of those i've seen so far (kimi no todoke; your friends) is fantastic. great ability with subjects that would be easily done in a too-sacarine fashion, but unfortunately also capable of slipping over that line a little too far (from reactions i've read to 'april bride', for example).

as for the fan subbing of his work, i've never really ventured into syncing SRTs to official J discs, and never really been a fan of download culture. just feels corrupting, even if it's a place to find access to lots of stuff that clearly people have a desire to see that doesn't experience any mutual appreciation from any film companies that might have licensed the stuff.

The fansubbing was a very cool thing some 5-7 years ago, when people were giving srt's to folks who had bought the disc... I did that too, but gave up after I found my subs attached to torrents...

I'm not gonna go moralist here... especially with J-films for people located outside Japan usually the only legal alternative is burn $60 on an unsubbed disc that no one has reviewed and you'll have hell of a trouble selling if it turns out to be less than a great movie... If you occasionally "preview" a film with the intention to purchase it if you like it, I can't really blame you...

Still, the fansubbing has taken a bit sad turn, with worst case scenarios where subbers refuse to hand out srt's to people who bought the disc as they want to promote their own torrent. Thankfully, there's still a lot of people who, on torrent sites too, do give you the srt if you ask polititely...

As for Hiroki, I really liked Kimi no tomodachi too. But my favorite is easily It's Only Talk. As for the rest of his films, I almost always find them interesting but flawed... most tend to fall in the *** category (Vibrator, Love on Sunday, Girlfriend, Tokyo Trash Girl...)

Oh, btw, River was just announced in the NC line up.

yeah, i'd expected keibetsu to be bypassed somewhat in favour of river. subject matter plays a part, but the timing of a festival in relation to it's J release is a bigger issue - different companies resist for different (but typically odd) reasons, from what i hear and sense.

personally, i've tried to put a lot of effort into keeping track of info as to what's out there in japan, and have shared it in different ways over the years. oddly, this has only ever led to me having one or two contacts who might facilitate me seeing some films that won't get a release, at least not for a while. people don't come forwards and i don't know where / if i can step forwards to make contacts. therefore, i'm predominantly waiting for NYAFF and JC line-ups.

never worked out how that whole screener thing works, and never found out why people don't reach out in hope of accessing information or creating some kind of network of efforts and reward for those that are self-motivated or in some way apparently capable - mainly because I've never been directly told anything more than few times than anything i've tried to do has proven even slightly useful.

there are films i have hopes for, film's i'd say were typical of NYAFF and JC, but I don't find out what's there until everyone else does, and i don't know what i will get to see until it arrives a few weeks down the line. did make a point of mentioning keibetsu as one of the better-looking from last year though.

if anyone needs a bargain, wow hd (formerly cd wow) have this HK release (subbed in english, due next week) at £9.49 - http://www.wowhd.co.uk - think this includes worldwide shipping, as they have many incarnations of their site for different countries.

pretty much slightly under any other price on this, but you can also find discount links >

i sifted through this link and found one that gave me £1 off. some only give 50p off, so keep looking.
