just watching some of Burton's Batman on sky hd. looks stunning,hope this gets a disc release soon.

You have Sky HD too! I'd be keen to get it but my god it costs a fortune. I hear Terminator on SkyHD looks better than the BD.

Humax are going to release a STB and Dish this year to pick up the FTA HD channels. It's not known yet (but likely) if it will be a PVR too. Humax Freeview PVRs are some of the best on the market. Mine rocks.

I cannot now renting but if I could I'd definitely be interested. How much FTA HD stuff is there?

had sky HD for about 6 months now,bought the box on ebay and put it in myself. free to air channels there is channel 4 hd, bbc hd which looks the best, luxe hd (crap) sky arts hd,discovery hd i think the rest are sub channels, 2 hd movie channels,sky sports hd,sky 1 hd. Terminator on the hd channel does indeed look a bit better than the BD.

Hell no. They're free but you need a subscription to access them. Just like you need a subscription to access ITV and C4 on Sky too.

Samsung HD Ready TV yes but not a HD Player. I'm waiting to find somewhere that will import me a Samsung BD-UP5000 Duo HD Player from America.

Actually, I don't suppose that really matters since I've got a HTPC which can play all regions!

Still, it would be nice to know if I'll have any problems getting hold of The Rock in an uncut form...

As a rule of thumb with Disney:

* New titles in North America are region locked
* New titles in Europe some are but others aren't
* Catalogue titles in North America and Europe aren't region locked.

Salty can probably say better than I can. I'd guess Finding Nemo will be most of the rest won't be.

The BD has been out in France for a while, but agreed I'd prefer it from a cheaper country than France.

Oh and the French BD is Region Free. I'd imagine the USA one is too.

The uk BD of the Rock is uncut and has been out for ages. Disney are unreliable when it comes to region coding, in the usa pirates 1&2 were region free,the 3rd wasn't. the recently released Bad Santa is region locked,Cars isn't.

The new UK releases of Paprika and Tekkonkinkreet arrived at my house today. I am currently checking out Paprika, and I am very annoyed to find that it is windowboxed. So surely this isn't 1080p then! What complete idiots, they know that most HDTVs have a 1:1 pixel mapping mode nowadays, and they pull shit like this.

I'll check Tekkonkinkreet in a minute and see if it suffers the same.

Tekkonkinkreet is in 2.35:1 so is presented properly. It's better-looking as well, since it uses AVC instead of Paprika's MPEG-2. (Whilst checking through bits of Paprika I noticed artefacts).

Thats one thing 720 Screens dont do (I think all of em) Full Pixel Mapping. I could not do without that now, even standard dvds look so much better seeing the entire film and even the ripped prints they use down the sides, its mazing what you see on them extra bits of screen, its like The Ring where she stretches the tape off the side

It is 1.85:1. It's window-boxed like a few animes are, in order to retain more of the image when overscan is in use on normal TVs. The reason I am annoyed is because this has no place on high definition formats, where our TVs have a 1:1 pixel mapping option more often than not.

Yeah, you can only do 1:1 pixel mapping on a 1080p source (which includes upscaled DVDs).

I've just taken a photo of it to demonstrate to you. I know it's not dead clear in the pic, but if you look closely, you can see where the frame of my LCD ends, and the image begins. (All of the white bits are from the flash of my camera by the way!)

Is it really noticeable? I thought 1920x1080 was a 16:9 aspect ratio. If so how can it be 1.85:1 and window boxed?
