Shogun Assassin BD (LW&C, too?) (Animeigo)

Post by HungFist »

Thanks to James Flower at AVManiacs for this terrific piece of news. In youtube there's a clip of audio commentary being recorded for a 5 disc BD edition of Shogun Assassin.

5 discs? Well, there's actually 5 Shogun Assassin films (almost no one knew parts 2-5 existed until Animeigo released them on dvd... these are the dubbed versions of LW&C 3-6 of course) so it makes sense.

So how about LW&C? I have no idea, but most likely they are coming, too, maybe in the same package even. If I'm not mistaken Animego's Shogun Assassin dvd was in fact not the original Shogun Assassin print, but a new replica created from the superior LW&C prints. The sequels are most likely just the LW&C films with an English dub laid over it. So it should be easy.

Of course, Ogami Itto has been busy in standard definition as well. I'll copy the recent news from the JP cult cinema thread.

1. Eureka's UK LW&C + Shogun Assassin box set

Guess what? It's not a conversion job, but NTSC transfers. Beaver reviews and compares to the old UK discs.

As for the cut status, the product desciption at amazon states "fully uncut". Sword of Vengeance was cut 6 seconds by BBFC in 1999, while Babycart in Hades lost 20 seconds back then. I don't know why BBFC's database doesn't mention any update.

It's a shame this set doesn't feature the extensive bonus features from the Japanese box set releases (there were two box sets, and both came with a bonus disc featuring interviews)
2. Toho's 2 box sets + individual releases
HungFist wrote:Toho’s LW&C 1-3

Trailers and picture galleries listed... and a 4500 yen price tag. Almost makes you wonder if Toei authored these dvds...

However, the box set comes with bonus disc with interviews (and possibly other content).

Would be interested in the BD's, if they do a boxset of LW+C films as well.
That Japanese box art is brilliant :D :o

Don't know what happened to those other 4 discs. Probably a misprint.

Shogun Assassin on BD

EVERY dark scene does this for me.

My Panasonic DMP-BD6905 (w/current firmware) connected via HDMI sraight to my Hannspree 25" 1080P LCD HDTV. TV is set to 1080P too.

Bobby Engelmann (Vice President of Operations I AnimEigo, Inc.) got very smug with me AFTER I sent them these pics. He said they tested the disc on 20 players and it was fine. And sends me link to DVDTalk praising the video quality.

Then why does it look like crap on my setup? NONE of my other BD discs look this bad.

Oh, if I turn the sharpness down on BOTH my BD player and TV is is about 90% gone. I should not have to tho...

Is that Shogun Assassin?
God, that looks dreadful.
I still havent seen a Lone Wolf + Cub BD set. I bet it will be expensive. (I still have the cheap Thai DVD set which are Animego ports - AFAIK).

with this and All Men Are Brothers, and both problems not being adressed by other people, I would assume the problem is with your hardware, not the discs.

Yup, I'd be suspecting the player I'm going to state the obvious and ask if you've got the most up-to-date firmware installed? The only other thing I can suggest is if you have any friends with BD players/PS3s then take the discs round and check them out, if not and you're based in the UK then you can try sending one of the problem discs to one of us if you like - although you're gonna have to assume we're not all a bunch of con-artists! :D

What display are you using BTW? Have you googled the model number to see if there are any known issues with the display?
Oh and another thought, you say none of your other BDs show these glitches but how many other BDs do you have? I wonder if this could be an issue with the player and a particular codec, ie: VC-1?

Then why is this the only BD disc I own that does this? 20+ BD discs in my collection. Plus I have watched a lot from Netflix with NO issues. Latest firmware as well (as noted in my post)

My Opium and Kung Fu Master BD disc looks great. BCI got that disc right. Too bad they are gone.

My TV is about 3 weeks old too!! It still has the "new car" small!!!

It's their discs authoring and combination of my BD player. They need to QA a tad better. Plus Animeigos Smug CEO telling me it's my problem sent me over the top. What a ....

Note, WellGo acknowledged the All Men Are Brothers issue as that was an authoring mistake. They will be doing what they did with the Delightful Forest Disc. That's not my players fault.

No two encodes are ever the same, have you gotten in touch with Panasonic over the issue? BD manufacturers rely on user feedback to address playback issues with particular discs. Get in touch with Panasonic and hopefully they'll release a firmware fix before long.

I might, but Bobby Engelmann (Vice President of Operations I AnimEigo, Inc.) was too smug.

I am returning the disc for my money. Dont need to double dip on a poor product.

Delightful Forest & All Men were fine on my Oppo though in the case of All Men i had to change the setting to 1080i to stop the frame stutter..

WellGO USA was too cool. As a gesture in good faith because the All Men re Brothers BD disc was bad, they sent me a BD of Ip Man free. The 2 disc version!

Only thing I received from Animeigo for their Shogun Assassin BD disk looking like crap for me was nothing but smugness from their VP of Operations.

WellGO will get future purchases from me, Animeigo will NOT.
