Hero is a HK/Chinese co-production. Those are very common in HK these days.

Right. So what's with Brad saying its' not an HK film? :? It is, CTHD was an HK film (OK maybe thats stretching it, I think it was an HK/China/Taiwan/US co-production).

Are you sure rights work that way Romero on TV? I'm not sure they do.
Not sure exactly what you mean?

but Different channels pay for the privalage to keep the film on their chanel for a limited timeframe and only they can show that film a certain amount of times in that timeframe. Its always worked that way and always will for the forseeable future on normal TV (not sky, etc..)

Fair enough Romero I was asking if TV channels pay for rights like DVD companies do.

That's not surprising.

For the record I never said it wasn't a HK/Chinese co-production I said it wasn't a HK film! There's a difference.

Although it's ultimately a moot point come 2046 (or soon after) HK will vanish inside China! Sad but true.

Are DTD, KOTD, The Transporter American films?

On the HK prints of Hero it still mentions Miramax but that doesn't mean its' an American film. Does it depend on where the bulk of the money comes from? In that case Brad, DTD, Transporter are possibly American movies.

They're French, filmed in English and made (mostly) for the American market with American money but it's not important

The Luc Besson films are French productions with some outside investment. I think Danny the Dog even had UK money.

I would say Danny the dog and Kiss Of the Dragon are French/UK/US and French/US production respectively. I have no idea about the transporter.

Again this is only my opinion but I would say that even if the majority of the money for Hero came from Miramax it would still be Hong Kong/China/US

I watched some of it last night but had to miss most of it as I was out - doh!
There was quite a bit about anime.
Why did the Spirited Away clips only have the English dub on? It was annoying also when Ross was interviewing Miyazaki and the other animators, they got someone to talk over the top of them, thus preventing us from hearing them speak.
Interesting for Ross to say that the subtitles in "Ghost In The Shell 2" (I'd heard about this debacle) were mistranslated on purpose. I didn't know that.

Does anyone have GITS 2 to confirm this? I'm hoping that he bought some dodgy mainland Chinese bootleg because those subs from the clips were embarasingly bad. I mean the grammar was horrendous.

I'm put off buying the DVD if I have to sit through subs like that tbh.

Very nice documentary but I hate how they spoiled every single bloody film. I haven't seen Audition or Gozu yet but Jonathan Ross would say something along the lines of "and we are about the reveal the film's climax right now." Alright, good to get a warning but like wtf man, honestly.

It would've been better to have the interviews subbed. Ryuhei's was nice to watch as I'm a huge fan. He seemed somewhat grumpy at HMV though. Maybe he too couldn't tolerate Jonathan Ross's spoilers?

I haven't seen any of these programmes yet although I did record twilight Samurai, I, Samurai and Jonathan Ross's Asian invasion for later viewing. Does anybody know when episode two of the Asian invasion is going to be shown? I haven't had a chance to look.

Anyone see the HK one? Thought the programme was OK - but I couldn't understand why Ross ignored some important Shaw Brothers movies, and why miss out Fist of Fury from Bruce's catalogue? Why have 2 mins on Jackie and Bruce and about 15 on Stephen Chow (I realise Ross had an interview with him but still).
It did remind me though there are loads of recent HK movies I'd never seen before and would love to check out :)

Also I noticed when showing clips, that they used the English dub for WAY OF THE DRAGON but the Cantonese soundtrack for IRON MONKEY (for example, during the climactic burning pole fight).

I guess they have shited the focus away from Bruce cause he's been dead for over 30 years now. Time to move on, people! ;)
No, I think it's because Stephen Chow is one of the most exciting and promising Actor/directors working in cinema today. Most people are already familiar with Jackie and Bruce (well... the people that would watch Asian Invasion at least), but Stephen Chow is still relatively unknown. So I think that was a good choice.

Is there anything on this weekend? I cant get BBC4, but my girl just got digital TV on a trial basis, so last weekend we watched Ping Pong (plus football... lots of football :D). Is there an asian movie planned for coming friday/saturday?

Ping Pong was great btw. Much better then I expected. Really enjoyed it alot. it was a shame they didnt show it in widescreen though...

I also couldn't believe how terrible the subtitles were for Ghost in the Shell 2 as well. It seems ridiculous that they would deliberately mis-translate as an artistic decision, surely that cannot be correct? I too am put off buying the DVD if that's the quality of the subtitles for such a major Asian release.

I thought the Japanese edition of Asian invasion was far more interesting than that of Hong Kong mainly because there was more I had never heard of. Admittedly the programme didn't show me anything I was interested in seeing that I haven't already seen. Generally I don't think I gel with Japanese cinema.

I was very disappointed with Asian invasion Hong Kong I mean how can you do a show without a feature on Jet Li? I also have to say that far too much emphasis was put on Stephen Chow. I realise I haven't seen kung-fu hustle but Shaolin Soccer was absolutely dire and if this is a prime example of his work, God knows why he's so successful?

Contrary to my disappointment with the Asian invasion series so far I found I, Samurai very interesting. I think it's a shame that too much focus was put on the artistic side of things but it was very enlightening to see this side of the Samurai. I was quite surprised to see a shop selling Samurai armour and swords especially since they appeared to be selling swords, helmets and armour which were several hundred years old. I think the price the documentarist was told was for the armour and the sword was £22,000 which is not cheap! I think if I ever won the lottery I would treat myself to a genuine Samurai sword.

I also watched geisha girl which was quite interesting following the life of a 15 year-old going into training to be a geisha. It is quite weird that the Japanese celebrate the geisha as the highest form of artist even though they come across somewhat as glorified call girls. I was very surprised when she finished her first first stage of her training to become a Mako or trainee geisha if you will. The press were present and even at this lower level she was afforded a kind of celebrity. It all seemed very weird to me.

I missed the Korean programme on Tuesday unfortunately :(
I like Stephen Chow but also thought they concentrated far too much on him, oh well.

Sorry I posted these links in the wrong thread.
I didn't know you guys were talking about Asian Invasion over here.

Here are the EDonkey links to all 3 documentaries:

Takes about 1 or 2 days to download each show on a properly-calibrated donkey.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".
