bradavon wrote: PAL and NTSC if you break them down are frames per second, hertz and resolution that's all. I'm no expert but I understand that's all it really boils down to.

HD uses the exact same specification no matter where it's produced. It effectively fixes PAL speedup. There are some minor alterations used by some studios but by far overall they've all agreed to use the same standard.

Sorry but I cannot remember what the technical aspects are exactly, it tends to lose me a bit. In short PAL and NTSC is a SD issue. The only reason DVD is stuck with it is because they never managed to agree on an SD standard, as you know. This isn't the case for HD.

Sony claimed at the time MPEG2 despite being older looked better. I don't know if this is true.
Haha, no it's not true, that's just your usual Sony bullshit

The HD pictures are 24Hz, which most players convert to 50 or 60Hz depending on where you live. You can watch Blu-ray and HD-DVD on a standard definition TV, and it seems to look like NTSC. I think if you play them on an old PAL-only TV, it comes out black and white, so that's due to the NTSC refresh rate - which is why there's no PAL speedup! :)

That's it. It's hard to explain. In short it's history on HD :D

If you a buy a film you haven't seen because it looks like it could be interesting that's buying on spec. You NEVER do that when ibrowsing thru an HMV sale for example?
Markgway wrote:I don't think there are too many, except from the USA only studios of course like Lionsgate but then that happens with UK studios too.
Yeah, but if they don't code, it might not be too big an issue. I'm sure by the time I get an HD player the goalposts will have changed anyways...

So there's no PAL or NTSC players? I took a look at some discs in HMV and the HD titles run NTSC speed whilst the blu-ray equivilents run PAL speed. I found that strange... unless the covers were mistaken. So which is it? Eg. The Last Samurai = 154m (HD)/148m (BR).
What make?
Panasonic.
I know what you mean I don't re-watch much but do sometimes. Think of it like this I bet you've re-watched some of your DVDs, same thing.
Seriously, nothing last more than a week on our RAM discs. It's watched and then wiped. If I saw a film I liked, and wanted to see it again, I'd buy it. I can't ever watch a film twice within a very short space of time.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD both run at the correct speed, 24 frames per second. I have found that Fox titles have the PAL speed on the back of the case. It is a mistake.

Spec to me specifically mean AV and extras. I don't buy DVDs in shops. I've done it maybe 2-3 in 3-4 years, price always suck compared to online. You see an HMV bargain and it's always cheaper online.

I do buy DVDs based purely on forum opinion though, especially Martial Arts films. I doubt I'd buy any if not for this forum :D
Markgway wrote:Yeah, but if they don't code, it might not be too big an issue. I'm sure by the time I get an HD player the goalposts will have changed anyways...
They may do.

New Line have only "just" got into HD and are releasing their Blu-ray titles with it's anticipated regional coding but are specifically delaying the HD-DVD version until it's been released more worldwide. Thankfully no other studio is using this sneaky tactic. No New Line title is out yet to confirm BDs regional coding.

For example:

Pan's Labyrinth BD and HD-DVD at the same time, because the UK HD-DVD/BD by Optimum was being released at the same time. No reason to wait but Shoot 'Em Up according to DVD Active will be BD but HD-DVD later on in the year. I wonder why.

BTW I mentioned New Line above. Fox are still the only studio I'm concerned about, but mostly because I plan to import my HD Combo Player. So it's Region A out of the box and gives me North America + Asia (to be on the safe side).
Panasonic.
That explains it. I think they invented DVD-Ram, regardless they've always been big supporters. DVD-Ram is rare on a DVD Recorder. Good find and good work in actually using it. I doubt most people who have a Panasonic DVD Recorder do.
Seriously, nothing last more than a week on our RAM discs. It's watched and then wiped.
Well that's because due to the number of discs you have you have to wipe them. There's much less need with hard disk based systems. Because I too record so little I have stuff going back to when I first got my Hard Disk Recorder 2 years ago, some cracking documentaries that one day I may want to re-watch but sadly have never been put out on DVD.

Besides like I said for me that's less of a reason to get one.
Markgway wrote:I took a look at some discs in HMV and the HD titles run NTSC speed whilst the blu-ray equivilents run PAL speed.
That is observant of you. I'd say a cock up. It's certainly not a case of them being encoded in PAL/NTSC for sure, whatever the reason. As Gasteropod says it's more a case of studios still getting used to the HD world and relying on DVD cover art too much. I wouldn't rely on HD cover art to give you a 100% accurate running time.

To give you another example. I saw today EIV's "The Crow" BD and it specifically said on the back:

"Anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1)"

There is no concept of Anamorphic on High Definition. Anamorphic is an SD concept to increase the quality in a 4:3 frame (if you consider all DVDs are 4:3 then the player stretches them sideways to 16:9). With non-anamorphic/letterboxing the black is part of the image, the player is more than capable of creating this so that extra space can be used for the picture. That's a crude explanation but you get the idea. 720x576 (PAL) and 720x480 (NTSC) are the two DVD resolutions, both are 4:3 aspect ratios.

I'm sure you know this much anyway.

HDs resolutions:

1280x720p
1920x1080i
1920x1080p

Are all 16:9 resolutions. Anamorphic is completely redundant. DVD has to also account for 4:3 TVs and letterboxing, this is simply not the case with HD. There is no such thing as a HD Ready 4:3 TV. Forget whether a HD Disc is anamorphic or not, it's not relevant and if it is stated it's incorrect.

Personally I wish they'd created a 4:3 HD aspect ratio (something by 1080p would be about right) to account for 4:3 content but instead they've opted to pillarbox 4:3 content into one of the 16:9 aspect ratios above. That sucks IMO. I know I'm alone in this thinking, at least on this forum anyway.

It did remind me of an early EIV DVD I bought that said VHS on the sleeve :D

Me too. I don't give a shit they support BD regional coding, it's not like I'll ever buy their crap. Going by DVDs there has literally been 2-3 EIV titles not beaten elsewhere, I can think of.

Even less so now I care about extras much less than I used to. EIV's cover art is enough reason to ignore them.

It's a pity as they have some excellent titles in their catalogue and are one of the biggest British only studios, it's a shame they put so little effort into their releases. They virtually only ever release an SE when another company has already done the work.

It's a shame that there's no global standardisation for HD broadcasts. I remember reading somewhere that 720@60Hz is the standard for American broadcasts, whilst it's 1080i@50Hz in Europe.

It's true that on-line prices are usually cheaper. But sometimes you still get good in-store bargains.

Yet you hate Drunken Master II(!)
That is observant of you.
I have too much time on my hands, lol...

It's just something I noticed whilst looking at both packages simultaneously.

The Blu-Ray times were often 25fps.
I'm sure you know this much anyway.
No, please continue...

That is a pity.

According to Wikipedia some Aussie broadcasters even claim 576p/50Hz (or was it 60Hz I forget) is HD as it's Progressive over the 576i usually broadcast. Please.
Markgway wrote:Yet you hate Drunken Master II(!)
I never actually bought that :D .

I used to own a video copy of the R1 and also video of the HK DVD. Which I asked someone copy for me when I disliked the R1 due to the dubbing and thought I should give it another go. It sucked both times but was better on it's second run not being in English. This was back when people copied DVDs to VHS.
Markgway wrote:Lol, maybe that was just the quality?
It's funny you should that as the EIV "The Piano" DVD is a very, very old release and really sucks. Thankfully they lost the rights and Optimum released a decent SE. It's an outstanding film.

I have seen EIV BD Discs with DVD on the sleeve too :D . I forget which.

It's likely that HD-DVD wasn't in stock at that price. I've noticed MovieTyme remove a title from the search engine when they bump the price up. They only hold limited stock at the lower price.

Warren Beaty's Reds:

£6.97 before postage / £8.43 with postage: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000J3EG6C
Or the R1 is: $17.36 / £8.46: http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=739841

The R1 and Dutch R2 both have English Mono. I cannot find anything on the UK DVD but would guess it also has Mono if the Dutch Paramount DVD does.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also: Pedro Almodóvar's latest, Volver starring a voluptuous Penelope Cruz:

£5.00: http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/1871234/ ... oduct.html

The UK R2 2 Disc SE is the definitive version, beating the 1 disc R1. Sony have released a Blu-Ray Disc in America but for those who want the DVD get the UK R2.

Oh and it's brilliant, as per usual.

Thanks Salty. As it's so tosh though (the disc obviously) I'll pass.

I'm waiting for Black Hawk Down to be £9.99 again, it's dropped recently from £11.99 to £10.99. I can then get it for £8.99 using my £1 voucher, hopefully it won't expire.

£7.99 is good value for Terminator but I'm sure a decent version will come along.

The 2 disc tin of Sin City is only 10 euro here in Holland. Contents seem the same, but cover is different...

I'd buy it for the wealth of extras. Sin City is an utterly vapid film, outside of the art direction.

I havent seen it yet, but I;m sure it will be even cheaper within 1-2 months, probably in a '3 for 2' deal, or a '2nd item half price'...

You'll find that that's a common opinion, at least on this forum (probably 5/5 film for Romero and Bisc though).

Most outside this forum loved it.

I thought it looked pretty but like Eva said was completely vapid. It's also very gratuitously violent and very sexist to women. I love my violence but not extreme violence for the sake of extreme violence, especially when it's depicted in a way to make it cool.

My review:

An ex-colleague at work couldn't believe it either when he read my review.
