A Variety article just revealed a few new details on the untitled Jackie Chan / Jet Li project:
-
The budget is about US$70 million - pretty high for a "family pic";

- Master Yuen Wo-Ping has been asked to handle the action - good looking fight sequences guaranteed;

- Shooting is set for April - in Shanghai?
- Jet Li will play two roles, the Monkey King and the Silent Monk - The Monkey King is the center character of classic Chinese fantasy novel "Journey to the West". He is the first disciple of the Tang Monk (Tripitaka), who is on his way to seek for Buddhist texts. Not sure about who is Silent Monk.
- Jackie Chan will play the monk Tsa-Ho - aka. Sha Monk / Sandy, the Tang Monk's third disciple. The article does not mention the characters of Tang Monk and Piggy, his second disciple.

King of Kung Fu is the title, or at least the Chinese title, of the Jackie Chan / Jet Li Project (aka The J&J Project) according several Chinese newspapers. That sucks! Anyway, Master Yuen Woo-Ping has joined the project as the action director. Both Chan and Li have multiple costumes (modern time and ancient time). Shooting of this US$70 million English language movie will kick off in Beijing on May 7.

According to Shanghai-based Jiefang Daily, the title remains as “King of Kung Fu (literal)” and it still sucks. Both Jackie Chan and Jet Li will be playing two roles. Jet Li will play Tang Monk (Tripitaka) and his first disciple the Monkey King. Both characters are from classic novel Journey to the West and Tang Monk gets more screen time. Jackie Chan will play two of the Eight Immortals, from a series of Chinese fables. The cast may also include Li Bingbing (A World without Thief) and Liu Yifei (Love of May). They will play the “bride with white hair(?)” and “lady vengeance(?)”. The only un-cast role is the main villain. Jackie Chan will re-perform some classic moments from his Drunken Master and Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow. 80% of the US$70 project will be shot in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hengdian World Studios, etc.) and the rest will be made in the States. Director Rob Minkoff might arrive in China to do the pre-production.

The English title is "Kings of Kung Fu" rather than "King of Kung Fu". (sucks! sucks! sucks!) According to the Chinese press, the story tells a New York boy named Jason walks into an antique shop in China Town and touches a cudgel he is not supposed to touch. He is brought back to the ancient China, where he meets a kung fu master Lu Yan (Jackie Chan), the Golden Swallow (a girl) and the Silent Monk (Jet Li). They have to worke together to defeat Yu Jiang Warrior to rescue the Monkey King. Jet Li recently said this would be a a very relaxed family movie and his role would be very easy.

"Kings of Kung Fu" isn't that bad of a title in my opinion.

I agree. But I still don't understand why they can't leave that time-travel thing out and why there has to be that boy... :shock:

I still think that it's so anticlimatic that two of the biggest Asian action stars ever are finally teaming in a Hollywood childrens film.

Could it be lamer than Jackie Chan & Donnie Yen in that shitfest Shanghai Knights? Probably not, FFS Donnie Yen getting blown by a firework? Talk bout anticlimatic.

I already have no interest in this.

Just a lot of wasted potential, and a waste of time. Could turn out to be an entartaining kids-movie, but I didnt even like 'kids-movies' when I was a kid/teen (3 Ninjas, Turtles, etc...).

When I have kids I'll show them the good old Jackie and Jet movies.

And as far as martial arts flicks, I guess we only have Tony Jaa left now to come up with the goods...

Donnie Yen can still deliver and Wu Jing has shown some great stuff in "Full Contact" after he did SPL.

Donnie Yen averages about 1 good movie every 5 years orso...
Most of his movies suck, and even if they dont suck he fucks up the choreography by speeding it up, doing the same shit all the time, etc. Sha Po Lang was great, but apart from Hero and Shanghai Knights, in which he only had bit parts, what else has he really doen in the last 10 years that was really worth getting?

Wu Jing has lots of potential, but somehow he still isnt getting the right projects for himself to really make that final step towards really being a leading man... hich is a shame. I do hope that SPL and Full Contact have now paved the way for him to finally make his breakthrough.

It would be nice to have a new 'kung-fu-boom', which might happen if Tony Jaa's movie will again be succesfull...
Maybe the next 'boom' will happen in thailand and Vietnam... and maybe even in South Korea...

But it's sad that Jackie has been wasting his talents the last 10 years orso... and that Jet also seems uninterested in still making kung fu movies...

The HK action movie is dead.

"Dragon Tiger Gate" was pretty decent as well in my opinion. "The Princess Blade" had good fight scenes as well. But overall you're right. He really seems to have enjoyed undercranking.

Havent seen DTG yet, due to the bad reviews and opinions it got.
Also still havent seen Princess Blade because there doesnt seem to be a very good evrsion out yet. Plus what I did see of DTG wasnt very interesting.

He should just go back to making raw action flicks with lots of good action. Sha Po Lang was a step in the right direction, but choreography-wise still isnt as good as ITLOD4, or Tiger Cage 2 (I think).

He should step back from the director's and choreographer's chair and just focus on his performance: 5+ minute fightscenes.

DTG has some very decent action scenes. Not on par with SPL, but differently good.

Michael Angarano ('Sky High') is in final negotiations to star alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the upcoming 'J & J Project'. Angarano will play a troubled teenage wannabe kung fu fighter who, after a humiliating defeat at the hands of a street gang, is sent back in time to ancient China to free the Monkey King (Li). Filming of the production is due to begin in May.

Lionsgate has come aboard as domestic distributor of the action epic "The Forbidden Kingdom," which it will co-release in the U.S. with the Weinstein Co. The film marks the first onscreen pairing of martial arts stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The project had previously been referred to as the untitled J&J project.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin May 2 in China. Rob Minkoff will direct from an original screenplay by John Fusco that is based on the Chinese legend of the Monkey King. The film's producer is Casey Silver of Casey Silver Prods. Relativity Media is financing the film, with the company's Ryan Kavanaugh serving as executive producer. Action choreographer Wo Ping is creating the fight sequences, and the director of photography is Peter Pau, who won an Academy Award for the cinematography in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

Poor dude. He can't even get work doing DTV Van Damme films any more.

It's his own fault for going to America and dropping his standards. He should have stayed in Hong Kong and kept making his own brand of movies. Although TBH he was never all that popular among the HK moviefans. His movies were deemed way too violent for their tastes.

Still though. it's a shame that the director of classics like Full Contact and Burning Paradise isnt making movies anymore.
