In the case of the Studio Canal HD-DVD releases which then mostly got ported over in the UK by Momentum and Optimum they were very early HD-DVDs. That's no excuse just an explanation. I also hear the PQ isn't great on many of them, no disaster but not as good as it should be.
Annoyingly there are a far few barebones HD Discs, for me I no longer really care. The film in HD is definitely enough, especially when it's cheap.
Rewind is down right now to double check but I'm pretty sure the European HD-DVD is barebones but with DTS-HD Master Audio whereas the USA Blu-ray has DTS/DD5.1 but all/most of the extras.
Personally I'd go with the BD on this one. The 5.1 is a remix anyway so I can't imagine Lossless will make a mammoth difference, even when we can play it back.

Like i said i already own First Blood on blu-ray. Total Recall is worth £7.82 even with no extras
Foxy also have The Fog, King Kong (1976) & T2 at £8.45 but out of stock.

T2 for £8.45 is great! I'd be interested if I wasn't waiting for the German HD-DVD.

Yeah, but I'd grudge giving up a 2-disc DVD for a bare bones HD.
But then very often the extras are pants anyways... I suppose?
It's the film quality that's most important to me.

Haven't you answered why you should get the HD-DVD then?
Given a choice between a 1 disc or 2 disc DVD I'd always pick the 2 disc but in reality I so rarely watch extras any more (and if I do it's minimal) I'm not bothered if they're there. The film in HD more than makes up for the lack of extras.
For less than £8 you're not losing out by buying it again if an SE does come anyway.

Thanks Salty.
I've gone for The Graduate. It's such an amazing film and there is no sign of a USA MGM Special Edition at all. I'm not really bothered it's barebones it's the film that counts.
It's also good the UK HD-DVD is DTS-HD High Resolution 2.0 and not some pointless 5.1 remix. I don't think I've ever heard a DTS 2.0 soundtrack before.
I was tempted by Leaving Las Vegas too but one is enough.

I went for the popular pairing of
Dune and
Waterworld yesterday on HD DVD
films that people seem to hate. Both for under £15, not to shabby. I love em both.

The chances of the longer cut ever coming out on any form of dvd, are pretty much not gonna happen it seems
I love the longer cut (have it on VHS) and its a better film for the 30 minutes of extra footage, but its never gonna come to dvd. I could hope, but it just doesnt seem a high priority for them, maybe one day may get a good dvd with extras as well, but I would say it just aint ever likley
shame.
Thats why I went for the HD DVD, its not the better cut, but its better looking than a crapp old longer cut VHS taped off TV.
One day the film may get dvd justice, but I would not put any money down on that.

Waterworld: Theatrical Cut is okay but it's also mostly awful. It passes time but then so does standing in the rain.

I came to the exact same conclusion. I can't be fagged to "buy to sell on".
Personally I much prefer cheap single disc deals instead of combo deals which are only cheap if you buy titles you wouldn't have bought otherwise.
