Well here it is, almost finished. I just need to build a new AV rack (the black one looks very out of place next to beech furniture) and the centre speaker still needs mounting on the wall just beneath the plasma, but other than that I'm happy with it...

05: The top of my bookcase. I'm going to have to sell a lot of DVDs to fit in HD-DVD & BluRay discs because its almost full already! Notice anything different about the light switch? Thats right, its remote controlled!



06: The bottom of my bookcase, with more DVDs, my XBox games & some N64 games too.



07: The outside of my door which can be seen from the top of the stairs. A couple of geek posters on there, but I don't care!

IM, what is your occupation? Or is this room the result of a long-time saving?

Wow! I like it a lot, especially the hidden cables. How did you manage to get them behind the wall? Or did you repaper the wall over the cables?

I sell & install TVs for a living mate. And yes, this room is the result of a lot of saving!

The cables are not hidden behind wallpaper at all. There is no wallpaper in my room - the walls are painted instead.

I know a few people in the trade & got one of them to help me put the wall bracket up. We also used an angle grinder to cut grooves to put the speaker wires into and then replastered over the top.

The result is a completely wire-free cinema (with a bed in it!).

The original plan was to put all the cables from the plasma to the AV unit into the wall too, but it turned out that the wall was made of brick, not breezblock, so it meant it was going to be a much bigger job than we thought.

In the end we decided just to put 2 conduits on the wall (the fronts tear off & reseal so I can get to the cables) to hide them. Its better this way as its more upgradable in future & it still looks the business. The reason I needed 2 conduits is because I have so many cables going into the plasma:

- 2x HDMI.
- 1x VGA.
- 1x Component (including audio).
- 1x RCA audio output.
- 3x SCART.
- Aerial.
- Mains lead.

So in total thats about 10 cables, and obviously I get the really expensive high quality cables at ridiculously cheap prices so I had to get those & they are a lot thicker than normal cables!

Its taken about 3 months to get the room how I want it. Now I just have to hang the centre speaker just below the TV & get to work on building a new AV cabinet out of beech wood instead of black ash...

Considering the space (or lack thereof) in my room, my room isnt too bad but there are wires all over the place, it doesnt look as neat as my old room in places.

Is that something that could be acheived by a non-DIY inclined person, or does it require actual skills to pull off IM?
Cos the wireless thing does seem pretty nifty...

nice room IM, i have a question tho....what happens if you decide you want to move your tv?

Thanks mate! Well the only wire you can see in my room is the one for my XBox controller, but I was thinking about going wireless with that too... LOL

The wireless thing is very nifty. Well, my whole room was gutted, we stripped the wallpaper & removed the old carpet before doing any work on the walls.

I'll warn you now, if you decide to use an angle grinder on a wall, it makes a LOT of mess. We ground 4 channels into 2 walls (2 front, 2 rear speakers) and the entire room filled with brick dust. I mean lirterally the entire room was filled with dust - we were stodd 3 feet apart & couldn't see each other!

Plastering was not my job, I've never done that before but it looks quite hard to make it a really smooth finish. The only reason we gutted my bedroom is because I hadn't had my room decorated for about 10 years before this whilst every other room in the house had been redone at least twice in that time.

So basically mine was well overdue! I decided that if I was going to make a change (my old room didn't do anything for my depression) I was going to make it a big & good change, and do everything right.

So thats when I decided to spoil myself & buy a plasma TV. I got the 42 inch version from work and had that for 2 weeks or so but it was just way too big - I was picking out faults with the picture rather than watching the program because I was just too close to it!

The 37 inch version is exactly the same set feature wise as the 42, but is a much more comfortable size at a 5 foot viewing distance. I would have loved to have kept the 42, but its just too big for my room.

Er... move it where? It comes off the bracket easily enough if I need it to, but its in the ideal viewing position for my room anyway. I won't be moving out of home any time soon; I have a few problems that I need help with & moving somewhere on my own is definitely not the best thing for me at the moment...

Since I'm now living with my mom and her new husband, I'm in a small room and dont really feel like it's mine. I cant wait to get a place of my own with my girlfriend. We'll have seperate bedrooms, and mine will look even tackier then Tsui Hark's
I bought lots of toys in Hong Kong and still have lots of anime-posters, so it will be one big-ass gaming/manga themed room.

Yeah retail sucks, mostly because when people come in to tell me they have a problem with their TV, they explain it to me & I know exactly what is, they never believe my explanation & either want the set replacing because they think its irrepairably damaged (even if its just a loose SCART lead!) or they go to my boss because they think I don't know what I'm on about because I'm young.

The majority of our customer base are about 900 years old... And they call us "youngsters" prejudiced...

Having depression doesn't help - sometimes I actually just want to kill myself because of how thick other people are - I just don't know how they seem to get through life so easily, and thats no joke...

Instead of wanting to kill yourself, just kill those thick people and do the world a favour

It's always easier to oppose democracy when you live in a nation where you enjoy the luxuries brought by freedom and democracy. If you were starving somewhere with miles of desert around you, I'm sure that the 1st world countries would look mighty fine.
