Non-Bruceploitation role for Li,here he's teamed with Simon Yuen.Sadly it's a lack luster affair,Li spends the first two thirds of the film being soundly thrashed but keeps coming back for more,eventually getting taught in the art of kung fu by blind man Yuen.

I thought BLIND FIST was one of the better Ho Tsung-Tao vehicles.

The Girl Who Leaped Through Time (Japan, 2010) – 2/5
Silly genius Nobuhiko Obayashi and 80’s kawaii idol Tomoyo Harada filmed The Girl Who Leaped Through Time for the first time in 1983. New adaptation have come frequently ever since, with Mamoru Hosoda’s anime film being one of the more recent ones. The anime’s leading voice actress Riisa Naka stars also in this new live action version, which unfortunately falls flat. The storyline is standard drama, the acting is whatever, and the new theme song cover falls far behind Harada's original. The 1974 setting does, however, bring some minor spark, and Naka is a relatively nice girl when she’s not screaming too much. Hardly a good film, but not downright terrible either.

Love & Pop (Japan, 1998) – 4.5/5
Hideaki Anno’s best film is a strikingly shot enjo kousai docudrama. Anno places the Japanese pop culture and its diseases, such as compensated dating, under a critical eye, but plays the game by its own rules. He follows the ordinary lives of Tokyo schoolgirls in Japan’s pervasive pop-culture environment without easy explanations or cheap drama. The unique camerawork relies on multiple aspect ratios and formats, mainly digital miniature cameras. 35mm film is used in the amazing 6 minute tracking shot that concludes the film. The storyline continues in the pre-advertising campaign that shows what happened after the film. Pure ingeniousness.

There was an unnerving, spooky atmosphere to this film and it was definitely more interesting than a standard horror film, IMO. The performances were good and music was impressive.

9 Souls (Japan, 2003) – 3.5/5
Toshiyaki Toyoda follows Blue Spring with an interesting if slightly inferior prisoners on the run film. The soundtrack is a step down and there are some terrible scenes, such as the mercifully short prison segment, but also many wonderful parts. While making its dirty bunch likable enough, Toyoda doesn’t forget they were sent in for a reason. This should be clear by the famous sheep fucking scene at the latest. The good screenplay, original atmosphere, and strong cast keep the film interesting till the end.

Alien vs. Ninja (Japan, 2010) – 4/5
Back from the dead studio Nikkatsu gave producer Yoshinori Chiba free hands to create new cult film label Sushi Typhoon. Chiba, who in mere 18 months came up with one of the most outrageous film catalogues of all time, started the line up with Alien vs. Ninja. Mini-budget it may be – Chiba-san usually invests about $200 000 per film – but what is lost in relatively dull visual look is taken back with a vengeance in sheer entertainment value. The metro-sexual ninjas (hair’s fine, all’s fine) battle the space bastards with fists, swords, guns, and shuriken, just to mention a few. Yuji Shimomura’s (Versus, Death Trance) action choreography is excellent, total WTF-moments come in 10 minute intervals, and some of the comedy would even embarrass 1980’s Hong Kong audiences. CGI is used here and there, but the aliens are men in rubber suits. Gore is relatively sparse.

From Shaw Brothers,A sad film to watch in many ways with the knowledge that it's star Chen Wo-fu committed suicide at age 24 not long after finishing it.To be honest it's not a particularly good swansong,as the storyline lifted pretty much from The Big Boss takes too long to get going and the lead's refusal to fight meaning he's used as a punchbag for 85% of the film gets a bit frustrating.An interesting film to see but not a great one.

Anime fans have something to complain about, I'm sure, but it's an enjoyable film. It's always nice to see these brain duels, as opposed to the usual guns and violence. From HK's side I kinda had similar feelings with Running Out of Time.

You watched just the first film (and not The Last Name?)? If so, then be sure the check out out the second one two, because it's essentially one film split in two, like Kill Bill. The Last Name is actually the better.

I was talking about the manga, comics. The Anime is fairly faithful to the manga but that also suffers a little from truncation.

I didn't say that I'd never seen Anime, just that it wasn't my bag.

I've seen about a half dozen or so over the years, but I just can't get into animated films.

It's me not the individual films that are the issue.

Ong Bak: The Beginning - 2/5

The martial arts was OK, especially when Tony Jaa was fighting, however the story was often confusing or just plain poor and there seemed to be an annoying use of undercranking and slow-motion
The first part of the film was mostly training and was quite boring.

The use of different weapons was quite cool though.
Actually with what I just said about slow motion, it seemed as if some sequences were sped up somewhat

Angel Cop (Japan, 1989) – 4.5/5
Near future: Japan has become the world’s leading nation. Politically financed terrorist groups attack public buildings. Biker cops try to keep the streets clean from human garbage. And then Bon Jovi freaks start appearing. Angel Cop is a staggeringly political and just as violent OVA classic with enough Jew-bashing to make it Mel Gibson’s favorite anime. It’s a kick ass cyber-punk ride that is more intelligent than people want to admit – albeit not one bit discreet. Not for the dumb viewers who won’t get the mixture of exploitation and politics.

Red Army/PFLP: Declaration of World War (Japan, 1971) – 2.5/5

“This is a news film for the construction of the world Red Army.”

Pink rebel Koji Wakamatsu and his screenwriter partner Masao Adachi were on their way back from Cannes when they decided to take their film radicalism to the next level. The two men found themselves in Palestine, shooting a propaganda film of PFLP for the Japanese extreme leftist group The Red Army. Wakamatsu himself was closely connected to some members, and also directed a terrific film (United Red Army, 2007) of the movement three decades later. Red Army/PFLP comes with some rare and valuable footage of the early 70’s Palestine and the PFLP fighters, but it’s also quite a frightening piece with its pro-violence message. It’s no wonder Wakamatsu got black listed by the US government because of this film. Subtitled prints were produced, although dubbing would’ve been preferable in this case. In subtitled form the long and dry but attention requiring monologue floods distract from the visual offering.
