The Big Boss (HK, 1971) - 4/5 (Known as Fists of fury in the uncivilized world)
A fun Bruce Lee movie where the first half of the movie is spoiled by Bruce not fighting because of his ridiculous oath. The plot is simple but effective and it involves dope which always makes things intersting and bloody. Some very nice fights in the later part of the movie, also good theme music. One minus is that the love intrest of the film is as boring as a pile of bricks and even the prostitute characters look more fun and intelligent. I'm just wondering how this movie got past the sensures in a communist country? The workers are on strike almost the whole film and they don't work as hard as slanty eyed people should.

(The last sentence was a joke so don't take it so seriously)

If I remember correctly this was an accident. The US distributor wanted to call it The Chinese Connection cause, ehm, The French Connection won Oscars and also had drug theme... But they fucked up and mixed the prints... so Fist of Fury became The Chinese Connection, and The Big Boss became Fists of Fury

The music on the Mandarin (Wang Fu-Ling) and Cantonese (Joseph Koo/Pink Floyd) versions is pretty dull.

The English redux (by Peter Thomas) is the classic score.

Had to watch the English dub because I was watching it with a dude who has no grasp of any Nordic language or Finnish so subs were out of the question.

Seems I was wrong on how much power the SAR regions of China have over their matters. Well that joke would have worked even if I had switched communism with capitalism.

I was just giving Big Boss a spin the other day and its fun comparing the different music, I like the funky English theme.
The Fox disc appears to time its subs for the Cantonese dialogue even on the Mandarin track.
It would be cool to see a completely uncut version one day (won't happen).

Takeshis’ (Japan, 2005) – 1.5/5
The creative destruction of Kitano’s career: part one. Kitano (and all other leads) star in double roles as fancy movie stars, and miserable low lives. The egoist party runs heavy overtime with film references and self-irony losing their edge before the film has reached halfway.

Frog Song (Japan, 2005) – 3/5
Shinji Imaoka’s slice of life pink, with two troubled girls making friends and sharing passion in manga and frog suits. Somewhat poorly acted (despite primary lead Konatsu’s solid performance in the same year’s Blind Love) and 30 minutes too short for its own good, it still somehow manages to be more pleasing and natural character drama than 90% of mainstream productions. Imaoka blends in the sex scenes with decent success, has relatively interesting characters to play with, and plenty of nice scenes between the two leads. And oh yes, dancing and singing to the Frog Song (Kaeru no uta, the original title which can also possess dual meaning as a “song for returning home”). No wonder Imaoka’s upcoming Underwater Love will be a full-fledged pink musical shot by Christopher Doyle and scored by Germany’s Stereo Total.

The guy on the left is Ice Cube and the guy on the right is Chris Tucker, so I'm guessing it's one of the Friday movies or Barbershop or whatever (haven't seen any of them).

What did I just watch? I don't get the hype behind this film. Maybe Hung or Heka can clear this up for me. The initial scenario of a young man getting abducted for no reason and then him becoming friends with the kidnappers sounded really interesting. Paired with what could have been a nice road movie, it was really promising.
But that film was boring as hell. Now, I actually really like quite films. But they need to have better writing.
1 point for the effort of making this film, because I always respect that and 1 point for the nice guitar music.

That's what I thought when I was looking for that film after I missed it at a local film festival back in 2001 or so. Damn, 10 years ago. Finally, a German DVD was released in 2006, but I didn't buy it until 2008. And now, 3 years later I watch the film for the very first time. And because it is so bad I feel betrayed due to my 10 years of anticipation for that film.

Oh, by the way, the German DVD also has English subs.
