I watched Eraser the other night! wow I forgot how good it was! I am currently writing a nice favorable review of it, as its bloody great! nice, mindless violence and one liners its classic and its aged perfectly.

How does it compare to True Lies?

I've not seen Eraser for years. I remember it being enjoyable but not a keeper.

I enjoyed True Lies when I saw it at the cinema, but even though I have the DVD, I must admit it's overlong and gets bogged down with misogyny and smugness in the second third. Great action scenes though... and Arnie. 8)

I own the heavily cut R2 of this film. I quite like it as a typical Arnie action film, but I can't really watch it anymore due to the 3.5 minutes of action cut out of it.

Tom, Pitch correction doesn't always mean the sound is OK. Because they DO need to "mess" with the sound... look at The FellowShip of the Ring R2... the soundtrack on it is not good.

As for Resolution, there's 96 more lines of picture on PAL, but honestly on my system NTSC looks better (this is related to my scaler which seems to do 480 upscaling better than 576 upscaling)... and the difference between PAL and NTSC doesn't seem that big with anamorphic video as it does with non-anamorphic video.

of course, this is all depending on your viewing distance, if you are borderline close to your set with PAL, you would notice scanlines when switching to NTSC (on a regular CRT/tube TV).

As for this PAL/NTSC... when going HD they had every chance in the world to make a multisync standard... think how nice it would be to have a 96 or 72 fps HD screen? (Those are multiples of 24 - meaning no conversion needed for film material!)...

As for ERASER... I have the old NTSC LaserDisc... Do I need to upgrade? Let's see... when did I last see this flick...

Couldn't agree more. Cameron sure knows how to craft some fucking fantastic action scenes.

Its' very cheap now ($AUS15) at Ezy. R4 Eraser should be about 110 mins long (PAL) right? I'll get the R4 as I dont like silver platter discs.

Are you sure R4 is a amaray? All the old R4 reviews I've read say its a snapper.

Also basically I'm confused as to what the original runtime was - one R4 review says its 109m 52s, but add 3m 22s to 106m 58s (the length of the 15 video) and you get 110m 20s

t also says the "Film" 18 version ran 109m 10s before being submitted to the BBFC - eh?

Some of the BBFC cuts were substitutions; that would affect the run time.

Hmm. If you take away 28s from 3m 22s, you get 2:54, which is the exact difference between the 15 version and the Australian DVD. Maybe the cinema cuts don't apply for the R4?

I'm confused. Whats' annoying is my player doesnt show what the exact runtime of a DVD is when you pop it in the player (my old one did). There are other European versions I could buy though.

All non UK DVDs (and r4) must be uncut then.

I checked the BBFC listing and you're right there's no mention to substituted cuts, but having seen the full cuts list, and compared three versions myself (hey, I was bored) I can assure you that only about 2:45 of actual footage has been cut, the rest of the 3:22 cut time is due to the rearrangement of footage to accomodate substantial re-editing. This is most noticeable in the butchered VHS take on the raid on the cabin in the woods. It's incoherent on tape. we're supposed to find out at this point James Caan is the villain, but the removal of his smothering of the witness robs us of this important plot point! It's now a little while later when Caan shoots the kid on the plane we learn what he is. I would assume that every non-UK version is uncut unless you hear otherwise. I have the R1.

To update this thread,the best version is now the uncut usa BD.

I have it. Good film, sags a little in the middle, but the first and third acts are top-notch. Was passed uncut by the BBFC, but a BD never came.
