These special categories they single out are a joke and they advertise that category over the acting as to push it in our faces that they are Black, retareded, gay etc.. when really I dont care what they are they could be anything, but singling out special catergories is a joke I say. its racist I say and award cerimonies still get away with blatant shit.
Awards are like shit, theres always another one waiting to come out and the results are the same, SHIT!
You think the biopic "Ray" won awards because it told the life story of a person who was black and blind? Bollocks, it won awards because it was an excellent film and Jamie Foxx was superb in it.

I'll watch any film from any genre as long as it's good.
(the critically acclaimed 'notebook' was one of the worst films ever made as far as im concerned).
Bullshit, The Notebook received a critical flogging in the numerous reviews I've read, saying it's hackneyed contrived tripe mostly. It's been "loved" by audiences though apparently, eg like Bad Boys 2 was (critics said it sucked major ass, but it still did good box office).

Where did I single out Ray I didnt at all. If you cannot think of films that have won for political, racial, its there time to win (always a favorate with me!

) and other reasons then your a bunch of muppets as its very obvious to everyone when special votes to go certain films that do not deserve it.

I didnt say you singled out Ray, Romero I'm just using it as an example of a film that, by your logic, *could* win for reasons other than the quality of the film.

No, I think "Ray" is one of the cases where a film was given an award for its actual beauty.
However, the biggest joke was at the 2002 Academy Awards when Denzel Washington and Halle Berry both received an awards for the category "Best Acting in a Leading Role". What kind of a joke was this? Sean Penn and Judi Dench were both nominated as well and lost their award due to some political correctness fuck-up.
It is an insult to Denzel Washington in my opinion as he should have received an Oscar so many times before. His award for "Training Day" is the biggest joke. How was he acting better in this than in say "The Hurricane"? The award for "Training Day" actually seemed more like they were subsequently making up for what happened in the years 2000. Kevin Spacey received an award for his acting in "American Beauty" (not bad, but totally over-rated film) although Denzel Washington outdid him with his wonderful performance in "The Hurricane".

What did Halle Berry win for BTW? I've forgotten.

Lost Dragon you hit one nail on the head there

thats one of the examples I was going to state, they way everyone said ohh look black people are so good now we are all eqal now, when behind their backs they were saying the roles were not that good and really they were given them for political reasons and the fact it was Densels time again. Things like that really get to me, the media went mental and made a fuss over the black actors winning, they never do that over other races and singling out race, colour, mentality etc.. really sucks.
The worst things happen when its someones time, like Peter Jackson for instance he didnt win anything for the Lord of the Rings films then for the last in the trilogy they lump all the awards onto that final film! what a joke, they were all the same really in quality etc.. but it was the voters time to give him some credit.
Old people also get this done to them for a lifetime of work, so when they do an ok film and they seem old, they will fling awards at them! Award voting like this gets to me and makes a mockery of all awards.
But in the end awards to me are shit, every single one of them

people who care about them and think they count are pretty "special" people. Ohhh look this film has won awards! it must be great
Joe Public fall for it every time, we internet savy film fans we should know better.

Monster's Ball Grim and to Romero the critical press on this was very good as was it's box office returns so I've o idea what you're talking about.
We've gone way off topic how did we go from Brokenback Mountain to Awards???
romerojpg wrote:If you cannot think of films that have won for political
That has never been my point you're adding extra variables to the mix. I agree with you yes politics play a heavy part into the awards.

Go Grim

Agreed this was definitely political HOWEVER Halle Berry at least definitely deserved it her performance in Monster's Ball (and the film generally) was outstanding.
Training Day is VERY overrated, it's nothing more than a dumb crime drama.
I never thought much of The Hurricane.

Agreed, very much so.
The first should've won Best Picture as it was well the first.

I detest LA Confidential, an appauling film. Doesnt deserve to get anything excpet a slap.
POLITICS = RACE, GENDER, COLOUR, MENTAL STABLITY, AGE, GAYNESS etc.. thats what why I am going on about politics. Pretty obvious really, the Oscars for instance are ruled by them and certain peoples way of voting. Not that they even see most the films they vote for remember

its backslapping for rich people and Brokeback Mountain is going to be slapped HARD! as its gay.

I agree about ROTK getting a clean sweep of Oscars BTW, that was a bit stupid IMO, perhaps all 3 films should have got some awards each?
The 11 Oscars were obviously meant for the Trilogy as a whole, no?
LOL Brad I love that dancing smiley

Can you imagine what a mess it would probably have turned out to be if Joel Schumacher had ended up directing it.
I saw this tonight and considering the time I'll keep this brief but I thought it was utterly outstanding.
The two leads were fantastic, as were the smaller female leads. It was played very convincingly and really had your heart going. It was nice to see a film approach the subject from a grown up perspective for once.
Both Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal like I said were very good indeed and a brave move at that.
Ang Lee is also very good at choosing musical scores, last in CTHD now this (I've not seen Hulk). The music fitted every scene perfectly.
The scene when
Heath Ledger's character hugs Jake Gyllenhaal's shirt at the end was so beautifully done.
It's a said fact all we've been bickering about is this being a gay cowboy film and yes of course it plays an part but the central story is really about two people being in love with each other.
To put the record straight there is one kiss and only one male sex scene in the entire film and that is over so quickly (dressed to) it's barely a sex scene. There is more male/female sex than male/male sex.
It's not about the sex far from it. Mark I'd be really surprised if you have a problem with it.
The vista's of the mid-West of America were gorgeous. It should definitely get a Director of Photography and quite frankly a Director nod at the awards ceremonies as far as I'm concerned.
It's good to see it's already winning awards.
Ang is a true master director, a definite DVD purchase for me. Shame I see EIV have the UK cinema rights so I doubt I'll be getting the UK R2 DVD.
Memoirs of a Geisha was decent but this is the real deal.
Mordib wrote:and yes the acting was convincing, it was a brave move for Heath 'heartbreak high' ledger considering whilst he is quite good at foppish comedy he's sucked in pretty much every serious role he's tried (IMO of course

).
Check out Monster's Ball he's decent in that.
