Pretentious, moi?
Seriously, I didn't rate HAPPY TOGETHER at all. It irritated the hell out of me in fact. I spent the whole movie wanting to slap Leslie Cheung. Wong Kar Wai is one fo the most inconsistant directors I've seen. His films ranging from the low of this to the highs of In the Mood For Love and Days of Being Wild. Unlike some critics I don't feel the need to praise EVERYTHING he does.

It's not a FUN or ENJOYABLE movie to watch, but once you've been in a simular relationship, as in one is serious and the other isnt, yet you still really care about eachother, it makes a bit more sense...Markgway wrote:Pretentious, moi?![]()

The music, imagery and acting alone makes it an awesome movie.
So I think it will be hard for Brokeback to be a better movie then Happy Together, so if Happy Together was a better movie, why was it never entered and nominated? Ofcourse there would be lots of reasons possible for this, so it was more meant to be a rhetorical question.

To go far off topic here, I once called it "Lord of Apathy". It COULD have been great, if it had been a cat'n'mouse show with Hawke and Cage... but it wasn't. It felt like a boring documentarythelostdragon wrote:You think? I thought it was absolutely great! I love it and will get the DVD upon its release date.gojensen wrote:Where it belongs... in the recycle bin!thelostdragon wrote:BTW, where was "Lord of War"?
I don't think that's quite right. I think the majority ACTS like homosexuality is ok and normal, while they most certainly don't FEEL that way. Right now the PC thing to do is say you are okay with homosexuality... even if you are not.Yi-Long wrote:Just because we all FEEL homosecuality is normal and should be accepted etc, doesnt mean everyone ACTS like it's normal yet.
I had a very homophobic colleague once, and while on a joint task we had to walk from A to B. There were lots of people and a small walkway so we ended up "close" - whereupon he almost freaked and said I needed to walk further away
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I don't usually judge stuff until I've witnessed it first hand but Crash always looked utter rubbish to me. When I learnt that it was written by Paul Haggis, who had written Million Dollar Baby, which was the most manipulative contrived load of bile that I've seen in eons - I instantly knew Crash was going to along the exact same lines.
I read this the other day and the film sounds ALOT worse than it sounded. Now I have even less desire to see it.
BTW there's an R1 2-disc SE coming in early April:-

I watched Million Dollar Baby in a plane, so I might have missed the manipulative part when someone was handing out the tiny packages with 3 and a half peanuts in them, but what exactly was the manipulative part of MB?
I just watched a movie about a young girl rising to the top, then getting clocked by evil mean Lucia Rijkers, and Clint getting his guns and hunting Lucia down, shooting her like the dog she is...
Wait... that's not how it ended...
Anyway, it ended slightly different, but I didnt find it very manipulative.
At least, it didnt register with me as obvious.
Requiem for a Dream however... (vomits)

Ow... so how is it pro-euthanasia? I know the decision he makes, but they dont go out explicitely and say it's the very best choice. (which, in this case, it was...)
I thought (and I could be mistaking cause as I said, I saw it on the plane, so my attention wasnt 100%) they kinda let the judgement of Clint's action up to the audience?
Just because someone in a movie does something like that, doesnt automatticaly mean (for me at least) that the whole movie is propoganda for his action...
Anyway, it didnt strike me, at the time, as obvious manipulative, but maybe that's because I already have an open mind about most of these issues, and am not a black/white, wrong/right thinker...
So if someone in a movie makes a decision that I personally dont agree with, doesnt mean I see it as a method to change my mind over certain issues.
I dont agree with people cheating on eachother, and I dont enjoy seeing it done in movies, but I never have the feeling that such a movie would try and convince me that cheating in certain occasions is OK or anything...
