still based on a book isnt something I ever even want to now, as hell I want a film, not a book.

Many films are based on books. Gone With The Wind, Wizard of Oz, Its A Wonderful Life (kind of), its a lot of films you're missing out on

I am not missing out on anything Books are crap, take ages to read and dont do anything for me at all. Films and far, far better. Most books are changed loads for the screen anyway, as a lot of books are a mess.

books are great, the vast amount of inofrmation in such books is awesome, a well written book is a great thing to read and to enjoy...many your such a "new generation" withte "books sucks, i dont read"...

I have a low attention span and forget what I've read by the time I turn to the next page.

Amongst the last books I tried reading was 2001: A Space Odyssey, got half-way through but was side-tracked by exams and never got around to finishing it.

Last book I read was I Will Fear No Evil by Robert Heinlein. An early 70's novel where an old dying rich dude's brain gets transplanted into the head of his recently deceased hot blonde secretary. A very entralling read, got about 3/4ths through but was side-tracked by leaving high school - thus losing access to the book. I remember it very vividly, could pick it up and finish it easily I reckon.

I asked as I don't believe you like any South or Central American films and are to an extent biased against them (or more so the style many are made in). Proven by not even being able to mention one.

I bet you could list a slew of North American or Asian films.

I'm not really into reading books but bloody hell I know books aren't crap. They're definitely "as" good as film and in some ways better. A lot more is left to the reader in books than most films. They really help with your English too.

As Shen says a book contains so much more info than possible in a film. I know this and don't even read many.

the last book i read was, "The Holographic Universe", Quantum/metaphysics crossed with philosopy

before that, was "UGLY" a true story about the life of a judge and how she suffered terrible abuses as a child. i did read books in between but cant quite remember them well...

but indeed movies based on books, the books contain so much mroe info, look at LoTR, Harry Potter, Shawshank REdemption, The Color Purple ( i love this book, but now sadly hate the film)

oh and i saw Children of Men tonight, really good film, interesting concept well played out, some very poignant moments in the film, that make it really good. a little harsher than i expected but that made it better actually, Pam Ferris really suprised me after seeing really only her comedic roles i was suprised to see her act in this, and she did fit in rather well.

Yeah Pam Ferris is a good actress. I remember her from "Darling Buds of May", maybe a bit before your time Shen? God I sound old

Claire-Hope Ashitey was also really good (Kee) too. I bet they had to look to find a Pregnant woman black woman at just the right pregnancy period.

According to IMDB she's giving up acting for now to concentrate on Uni. I remember listening to an interview with her on the Radio a while back, after she'd shot "Shooting Dogs" (about the Rwandan genocide).

People always moan about this but the reality is if they put everything in it would be an uber bore fest. It takes inconsiderable longer to show on screen what can be said in only a few lines/paragraph of a book.

As Romero likes saying they're entirely different mediums, and only should be compared to ask if the film is faithful to the book. For example Blade Runner: It cuts out stacks of the book but the mood, feel and evasive are spot on. Hence it's faith.

lol i dont have a prob with not putting things in

most movies are awesome, ragardless of the books...

however the color purple, i just think spielberg made really poor choices on the scenes he chose to portray, after reading the book you just know the things he included paled in to comparison to the ones he missed out, replacing some scenes would make the film so much better. there were much muc much more powerful thigns he could have chosen from the book that would have taken the movie from good to great.

and yeah darling buds of may is before my time hehe. but i agree that Pam Ferris is a good actress

Spielberg, Lucas and Howard (that's Ron Howard) would make much better film if they'd lay off sentimentality. All 3 smother their films with it.

All have made some great films though.

Also some books are just unfilmable without having a slant put on them.
Eg:-
Cronenberg's adaptation of William Burrough's "Naked Lunch".
Michael Winterbottom's (whose a superb director, when he's not making porn) adaptation of "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman".

Moving on . . . I've not seen any film in your list. "The Life and Times of Tristram Shandy" looked dull as dishwater.
