Brad - I think you missed the point there!! They were talking about Depp's acting in the film being oscar worthy, not the actual film. So comparing them to Goodfellas and Casino is quite pointless as Depp wasn't in them!!

I know. I still think regardless his acting in Donnie Brasco isn't Oscar worthy.

Goodfellas or Casino are balls anyway as is Donnie Brasco Gangsta wankfests.

"Goodfellas" is very overrated and I always thought it was quite boring.

I happen to really like Donnie Brasco.

I agree Goodfellas is overrated. Always preferred Casino myself.

I honestly cannot think of many that are "great" films. I thought The Limey was far better than most mind you, but off hand I cannot think of any right now. They all seems to blend into one, and all use the same ideas over and over again and sort of merge into one another to me.

I LOVED Goodfellas the first bunch of times I saw it, although there are also times when I'm not 'into' it as much, and then it is pretty boring.

I personally dont like Casino. It starts of very promising and all, but as soon as Sharon Stone turns up, DeNiro changes into a pussywhipped mofo, the movie turns into a relationship drama, and it just ruins what could have been a great gangster-flick.

Donnie Brasco is a nice movie, with some good acting by Depp and Deniro. But the movie looks pretty lowbudget, it isnt all that entertaining or captivating, pretty predictable, the other actors seem to be overacting and just portraying caricatures of italian mafiosi. In the end, t coudl and should have been much better if it would have had a better diractor and/or screenwriter.


Good gangster movies (apart from the HK stuff, obviously) are IMO Layer Cake, Payback, Road to Perdition, The Untouchables, Friend (korean) and A Bittersweet Life (again korean)

I agree with Depp's acting in Brasco being very good, but indeed probably not worth an Oscar (perhaps a nomination)
I do think an actor of his quality should have a few Oscars by now, though. I mean, come on! Even Halle Berry and Kim Basinger have managed to win Oscars(!)

I was the reverse on the film: I didn't think much to it when I first saw it. It wasn't helped by Lorraine Bracco's character annoying the piss out of me. But the more I've watched it, the more I come to realise how well made it is. Cinematography is excellent, the script is a cracker and the acting (with the exception of DeNiro laughing - I've seen a few films where he's had scenes where he's meant to be laughing, but he always comes off as really fake ) is spot on.

I just can't get enough of Vegas

Aside from that I think you mean Pacino (;)), I agree with a few of the points you made. Although I still like the film.

I didnt say I didnt enjoy Brasco. Like I said, it's a good movie and I liked it. I just feel it could have been alot better.

Agree with Yi on his choice of good gangster films. "Road to Perdition", although very inspired by "Lone Wolf & Cub", is a first class gangster film. Probably the best one that was recently made in the USA.

I personally didn't think it was as good as the graphic novel (it didn't have the black humour, for starters) but it wasn't too bad.

The graphic novel sounded too OOT to make into a serious film, seriously John Woo style action? I can't imagine Tom Hanks sliding down bannisters firing akimbo'ed pistols without snickering.

The scene where Tom Hanks mows down all the dudes in the rain with the Tommy gun was perfect IMO.

The graphic novel was meant to be an homage to gangster movies in general, including modern stuff, so it did have elements that you wouldn't necessarily associate with Depression-era gangsterism.
But because Mendes decided to play it straight, it did become more serious. I'm not saying it was a bad film; some great visuals (Hanks cocking his gun (oo-er ) whilst striding down a corridor was really well done, and like you said, the Tommy gun sequence) worked well for the film.

I actually also liked the movie better then the book. The movie skipped the whole deal between Hanks and the Police, which was in the book. The book also didnt show the 'love' and 'respect' between mr. Loony/Moony and Hanks' character, and the ending was very different as well.

Dude, I can't wait!

I thought this was really disappointing.

I thought it was very dull. The fact that I looked at my watch to see how long it had been on just 20 minutes into the film showed that it just wasn't gripping me at all.
