Eh, I'm one of the few "pro-theatrical cut" people in terms of DOTD78. I used to enjoy the "Original Director's Cut" (which was true as it was ORIGINALLY Romero's first cut before he decided to trim more), but then again, this was when the theatrical cut became hard to find. However, when it finally got re-released on DVD, I saw why people preferred the theatrical cut. It still feels epic, but has better pacing.

The Argento cut is definately the weakest though. It's the shortest version, and uses only Goblin's music... many times using the same tracks over and over again. However, it's still worth checking out, as it also has extra footage not in either of Romero's cuts. Personally, I'm happy with my DVD set. It would be nice if they went all out with a multi-disc blu-ray set (then again, I don't even have a blu-ray or HD player yet), but I guess they'll gauge their sales of the single disc version first.

True, right now I think the only "multiple discs for multiple cuts" release is Blade Runner. And seeing as how this is Anchor Bay's first foray into HD, it'd be interesting to see how DOTD sells. I wonder if they'd also try Evil Dead, seeing as how it's a 16mm-to-35mm film. Speaking of which, I'm wondering how the DV-based 28 Days Later will pan out on HD. The only scene I think could look better is the ending as it was the only scene shot on film.

But anyway, enough of my multiple tangents and back to Romero and his zombies

Eh, true... now that I think about it, I think the theatrical cut of DOTD was the only one that was mastered in high definition as it was the only cut that was a "Divimax" (Anchor Bay's version of "Superbit") disc while the others I think were just mastered in standard definition.

The Argento cut of DAWN is pants compared to the Cannes cut.

He cut a lot of the satire and characterization and turned it in an action movie.

Brad -- if it's possible I would check out both the TC and the CC before committing to one version.

Opinion is very much divided over which is better.

AFAIK both Day and Dawn were released in Divimax (so a new HD transfer was created) but as you say OPY so far only the Dawn TC was remastered.

Seeing as the only way to see the CC is the 4 Disc box set I'll only be checking it out if I like the TC. I doubt the CC changes the film that much so you suddenly like it, if you didn't before.

You know, I just thought of something else strange... both the theatrical cut and the Argento cut of DOTD were given solo releases based on the box set... but the Cannes cut wasn't! I completely forgot a year or two after the set, Anchor Bay released a solo disc that actually said "ZOMBIE: Dawn of the Dead: The Argento Cut" on it.

The Cannes cut has gotten individual DVD releases from AB in the past, just that they're all long OOP and predate the Ultimate Collection by yonks.

Well I liked Halloween didn't I . You're probably partly correct. I was thinking I'd like the satire aspect but not the per say the gore aspect. We'll see.

Yeah, but that's what I meant when I said that only the current theatrical and argento solo discs were based on the box set discs, while the cannes disc from the set has yet to get its own release. The only AB disc of this cut was a non-anamorphic "flipper" released in the early days of DVD.

As for Diary of the Dead... unfortunately, not much more to say at this point. I'd love to see some footage, as long as it isn't "red band spoiler" filled... just a regular red band trailer will do

Diary of the Dead I hope is good, but so far I have no clue even what to say about it. The cast look fine, not too young and irratating so far, its just a very hard idea to put across, and I have seen this idea many times before. Its going to be very hard to pull off I think, very hard indeed.

It better not be stupid satire bullshit, as it does NOT WORK!!! Land of the Dead hits you over the head with a badly scripted mallet, Satire is ok when you dont bang on about it every 15 seconds, and if you acctully have a good script to start with! or even a good idea.

Romero talks bollocks about the satire anyway, these are sodding Zombie end of the world films! not a satrirical idealist contribution to cinema.

Its like calling Independence Day a political take on a thriller. BULLSHIT.

I've just picked up "Night Of The Living Dead" UK R2 Contender SE for £1.75 from Amazon Market Place . As I understand it the Contender DVD is the best of the UK DVDs (it has most of the Elite ME extras) and if I like it enough I can always upgrade to the Elite ME or Weinstein DVD.

I wasn't going to bother seeing it, but for only £1.75 I may as well give it a go. Why bother downloading it for that price.

Night Of The Living Dead is free to download anyway (well as long as it is not a copywrited newer print) and legal, as they forgot to add the proper rights on the credits haah so they never made cash from it or had control over who distributes and sells it. Numpties

The Contender isn't worth a penny! Although the extras are from the Elite DVDs, the Contender uses a print missing gore and violence - perhaps its an old BBFC censored print, as they cut the original cinema prints

Some prints make the film unwatchable, like the Anchor Bay version! now that scares me beyond words! it stops after every shot and freezes, well it acctually double prints the frames, after every single shot in the film haha! classic.
