Burnt in location titles only on Supremacy.

Agreed. I hate it if the opening credits in Star Wars were subtitled though but otherwise even my Scarface example doesn't really bother me.

Regular subs that are going to be at the bottom whatever. I don't care.
HungFist wrote:ok, Monkey, I get your point. But I would limit the burnt in subs to names of places. Dialogue, definitely not. Sucks to watch US dvd of Sex and Fury when you have burnt in Japanese subtitles on the screen in the English spoken parts.
That's the thing. Why should non-English speakers have to put up with the subs too?

I might see how much the trilogy box is.

English subtitles and captions were burnt-into the original film prints released in the US and the UK. That's not the same as French subtitles which would've been added by Universal France. Nothing to do with the filmmakers. They made an English-language film. If I bought a French DVD of a French film I would expect comparible captions and subs to be in French (obviously I would need additional English translations to understand it).

Serious question. Can you actually tell the difference? Provided the removable subs only subtitle the captions etc... and not the entire film. If not, I still don't understand the big deal. English subtitles are English subtitles, no matter how they appear on screen.

Life is really too short to be worrying about whether subs are burnt in or player generated...

I'm not fussed either way tbh, but iirc there are some nifty graphics in at least the 3rd film for the locations, certainly text you couldn't recreate via removable subs. Man on Fire and Night Watch/Day Watch are also examples where English subtitles were used in a more artistic way.

I don't have the disc at hand right now but I think the English sub font is different on the US edition. At least DVDTimes review would (more or less) suggest so.

Are you talking about dialogue here? If so, I can't believe you guys are suddenly seeing this from a national perspective only. Maybe someone who only buys dvd and BDs from his native country might think like that, but for any serious movie geek this would mean 80% of his discs feature burnt in subtitles in a language he doesn't speak.

Non-dialogue related on screen text is different. Of course something like Star Wars opening text is an iconic part of the film and should be left intact. Same with Love Exposure, for example in the scene where the Japanese text "365 days till miracle" (奇跡まで365日) appears in center of the screen with epic orchestra accompanying it. That's a designed cinematic element. Hardsubbing dialogue can hardly be considered such, or even if it could, losing the hardsubs would be a small price to pay when non-speakers of the language don't have to suffer from them.

True about Night Watch/Day. They used Burnt in Subs for the UK DVD of that one. The same applies to Slumdog Millionaire.

Exactly. Well bloody said!

I suspect IM and Mark would be pissed if a Japanese film had burnt in Japanese subs, regardless of where the disc came from. It's English language movies they really care about.

The opening credits of Scarface are ruined on the Euro DVDs for this reason. That's the only film I can think of I actively went to get the USA disc, after owning the UK one (when I got the UE that is).

I don't understand what you and Iron Monkey really expect from a film on disc, you want it to be faithful to the original, or faithful to your local theatre release ?
Looks like Bourne had the same releases in the US and UK theatres, it's confused. Let's take another example, Shingster talked about Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor) it has been released with nice graphical english subs in US (and in the UK?) theatres, the original russian cut didn't, what would you choose ?

The vast majority of DVDs I buy these days are from either the US or here in the UK. Even the odd Euro disc I buy is of English language films. But I would understand if a French DVD of a French language film had burnt-in french subs for non-French dialogue. Wouldn't be to my benefit obviously... no doubt I'd have a wee bitch 'n' moan. But it wouldn't be unreasonable. Remember the furore when the UK Bond DVDs has newly-generated captions and subs? Everyone (well, me!) imported the US editions. Hong Kong DVDs - which make up about 98% of my non-English language buys - usually have Chinese/English captions burnt in. Don't have a problem with that.

Not if it was a Japanese DVD and the dialogue being spoken was non-Japanese. I would understand that. Not saying I would want it but I would accept it. Eg. Zatoichi and the One-Armed Swordsman has embedded Japanese subtitles for the Mandarin dialogue.

Usually one and the same.

Sorry. I don't know enough about this film to comment. Obviously I would need English subtitles if that's what you mean?

The creative subtitles on Nightwatch were pretty good, missing off the BD though i believe.

USA or UK BD? As I can remember the USA DVD never got them (Fox) but the UK had two cuts, one with the fancy subs and the other without (Momentum I think).

Nightwatch was a Fox release in the uk and the usa and though the uk dvd had the creative subs,i believe both usa/uk BD's omits them, going with plain english subs.

The UK BD of Night Watch has player-generated subs like Salty says, iirc the DVD does indeed have the fancy burnt-in ones.

Yes I am for real - the US RRP of the US Bourne Trilogy on BD is $120 - its there in bloody black and white. I didnt say thats what Amazon were selling it for. Look at the price that has been crossed out.
I do not appreciate being called thick and laughed at.
Perhaps you misunderstood me.

Yes but no one in the entire world would ever pay full price.
So that before price is 100% worthless, as all RRP's are, esspecially $120 :D mind you some mentalists do pay more than that on export sites like Movietyme  just to get them a few days early :notworthy:
