From one idiot to another :

Deleting the IDE drivers/DVD drivers in Device Manager won't do any harm (then rebooting to reinstall them) but it's unlikely to fix it either. It's worth a try though. The BIOS should have DMA set for every drive (it being a HDD, CD/DVD, whatever). You can normally change it but like you say, you wouldn't want to.

When it comes to this stuff I FEEL like a complete idiot.

Can you advise me which of the following to uninstall?

Both. You won't do any harm. After restarting you'll see Windows has automatically put them back.

I tend to highlight them on the first screenshots and press the DEL key. You'll see it then asks to uninstall or right click and choose Uninstall. It all does the same thing though.

You don't have a Windows 7 installation disc or system recovery disc? You definitely should. They either come in the box or you're expected to run some preinstalled software and burn your own. You definitely don't want to be without anything.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 btw have all the drivers/windows apps part of the installation. You should only ever need the disc to reinstall from scratch. Windows 2000/XP it's half and half, for things like this you won't need the CD.

I burned a repair disc for Windows 7 64-bit. I tested it via boot and it came up with recovery options. So I presume that's what I was supposed to do. There were no discs in the box. Everything was pre-installed.

Yep. That sounds about right. What make of laptop? Annoyingly most OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) give you those annoying Recovery discs. Dell thankfully give you a proper Windows 7 DVD (which only installs on Dell hardware).

The upside, that licence code on the bottom of your laptop can usually be used to reinstall with a regular Windows (OEM not Retail) DVD. My Toshiba laptop came with one of those annoying recovery discs but when I had to reinstall Windows Vista I got a mate to download Windows Vista from Microsoft Technet for me and hey presto the code worked fine. I'm now on Windows 7.

I thought you had a laptop. Personally I'd only buy laptops now. I don't play Games, which are really the only reason you may still need a desktop. Even Graphics processing largely needs RAM (not a particularly powerful graphics card) and laptops now support up to 6GB RAM, even average ones. You can get laptops with powerful Dual Core processors (even Quad Core). Obviously not as powerful as Desktops but most don't need that power. You can get external HDD to cover HDD storage.

I switched from a Desktop to Laptop back in 2007 but do still use a separate monitor/mouse/keyboard as I prefer the size for the amount of time I'm sat at it but a laptop means a lot less overall space and I can take it places. Which I don't do often but have done a few times since 2007.

Actually the other reason is cost. You need to spend about £400-450 to get a decent laptop. I'm pretty sure you can get a decent desktop for £300 (maybe excluding the monitor), although I've not looked into it. £300 laptops tend to be sub-par and £200 laptops don't exist (at least not new), they're they've sub-par netbooks.

I'll probably get a laptop at some stage, but right now I only need a desktop for home use.

I said "particularly powerful graphics card", learn to read. It's easy enough to get hold of laptops with dedicated graphics. It's an option on most Dell laptops for instance.

Brad: I uninstalled the C: drivers and as you said they reinstalled automatically upon reboot. I tried a burn and it worked just dandy. With any luck (and I'm rarely lucky...) that's the situation sorted. Thx.

Deleting IDEA/SATA or DVD/CD drivers in my experience usually does squat (they just don't tend to break). So fingers crossed for you.

Of course I have, you harp on about it just about constantly. I'm not installing an extra piece of software just to block one image, thats ridiculous.

It's not software but a Firefox extension (which is a very different thing) and does much more than block a single image. So many sites have Ads all over them, this hides them. You can also use it to block any image link too.

I'm amazed you don't already use it and you call yourself technical.

I'm well aware its an addon for Firefox; it is still a piece of software! I don't use it because I have no use for it. Just because I don't use it doesn't mean I'm not capable of using technology. Dumbass.

Just had an HP pop-up reminding me to create a recovery disc.

Do you have a CD or DVD with Recovery date on it? If so, then it sounds likes you already have. I imagine it's scheduled to pop up every now and again, to remind you.
