... the film didn't necessarily match the expectations...

That being said, that spot is fantastic. It doesn't entirely mispresent film... it mainly mispresents the tempo and proportions. There's almost more action in that spot that there is in the film... but the film has same level of intensity and style in the action bits...

But this scene presents the style better... actually, it's one of my favorite scenes in the film. Love the visuals in this one:

Why are all the BD covers so underwhelming, when the film had a couple of fantastic theatrical posters?

FR (the best of the three, but why not use a better one?)


Maybe the Finnish BD will feature the Finnish theatrical poster (left) or the cool white one...


Admittedly these might sell worse than the crappier posters (which should attract more idiots... who will then sue the distributor for selling a too good film)...

Thankfully I can wait. I saw the film in theater four times..

The Finnish poster is the best of those designs.

It has the same style, colors, mood, and even title font as the film itself.

(It's not really a "Finnish poster", though... but anyway, it's the one that was used here)

It was used here too. The left one is the best, the right poor. The USA cover is awful. Of the DVD covers, the UK one is the best.

Ruined by all the star ratings plastered across the bottom. I don't care what other critics think. If I'm buying the fucking movie then obviously I like it.

If you're buying the movie because you already like it, then it obviously doesn't matter what you think of the cover!

I think the French BR looks the best. By far.

However, I wish they would just move away from the whole blue color on the boxes. Yeah, it's 'blu-ray', we get it... but in most cases it just looks awful. I'd rather see some nice matte-black or whatever stylish dark-grey/black color, or maybe even slick white.

Oh, and without it looking cheap and plasticky.

I like the clear cases Criterion use, and MoC & BFI use clear dual-format ones nowadays too.

What Criterion use, and the black cases used by some Japanese companies, are the best.

The blue cases are incredibly ugly.

Whilst I agree the blue cases are bland I'd hate it if they changed it now. A black case would stick out so badly. I wish they used more digi-pack, why does that have to only be used for DVDs? So many awesome digi-pack DVDs I've now got in standard BD case releases. It's always a disappointment.

Most distributors treat the covers as an advertisement designed to pull in people who haven't seen the film, hence all the critic quotes and 3-5star ratings we regularly see plastered all over them. You already know you like the film and hence the cover has no meaning for you beyond the aesthetic; which obviously is an important factor for the people insane/stupid/anal enough to pay extra for an imported copy with a better cover. Luckily, the vast majority of fans out there are more rational and put disc specs & price before the cover design.

TBH, when you come across a movie in the store that you've never heard of or seen, and it has a bunch of praise on it with awards and 4/5 star ratings, it does make you pick it up, check the back, and keep the title in mind to check out some reviews when you get back home.

I never heard anything about Tropa de Elite, but supposedly it's a brilliant movie, which I only found out because I came across it in the store.

So obviously I can understand why they do it. However, it would be nice if they'd offer reversible sleeves, or would use stickers that are easy to take off.
