That gave me a jolt when I first saw it on cable (I was 13).

I don't really "get scared" by movies as such. Sometimes they make you jump - but a flash cut and a loud stinger can achieve that.

Only film I ever remember giving me nightmares was Psycho/Psycho II (I saw those when I was 10/11).

Fair enough as age 9 but then it's not meant for kids. What's the rating there?

18. Back in the 90's there was a cut, 16 rated VHS release which removed some of the violence, but I think the TV screenings have always been the uncut unrated version. The film's been on TV at least a dozen times... the last time was last weekend.

Your parents must've been less strict than mine then :-).

Maybe there should be a Basic Instinct remaster for the 20th anniversary.

That's the thing. The Ring also came first of that big wave. So I kinda think, what's the point? I used to have a DVD port bootleg of One Missed Call. I couldn't bothered to ever watch it.

I never managed to get away with that shit, mostly because until I was old enough to buy my own telly we only had the one TV in the house. My parent's were against us having TVs in our rooms.

It's scary isn't it.

I remember very clearly the (opening) day I went to see Batman Returns.

I bet it was weird seeing a Christmas set film in the summer!

No surprise there since Dark Water is the same writer, director, composer, and producer as Ringu - I like them both a lot, definitely in my best Asian horror list.

It was odd that Warners chose to release the film in June/July - they could've held it back until Nov/Dec I suppose.

Well, they did have the big McDonalds tie-over in the US, which caused a LOT of complaints when parents saw the film.

I recall the toys sold in Woolworths were only very loosely connected to the film. The Penguin was the old 80's figure repainted, there was a Robin toy, and nothing of the Circus Gang.

What were they about? It was rated 12 in the UK but Googling the toys, they look harmless.

Have just read David Kalat's excellent book on J-Horror - though ironically, it's the Korean films that sound the most interesting!

They may well do, but from my experience they're not scary and can be too convoluted for their own good. A Tale of Two Sisters is good, though.

Whispering Corridors and Memento Mori sound good.

I'm surprised no-one, to the best of my knowledge, has released the original video/tv Ring and Grudge films on dvd in the UK or US.
