I would wait years, and have for some films. For instance King Kong I will not buy until that specil edition comes along, it could be this year or next, but I will wait

Sometimes I cannot wait, sometimes I can. Resident Evil 1 and 2 I loved the films and waited a very long time until the best versions came out in germany, it took bloody ages! still at least I didnt buy it more than once, which makes a change.

I guess its pointless even buying dvds on that logic, as HD dvds will blow them away anyway

Fair enough in the case of King Kong and the likes of Kingdom of Heaven but my point was would you wait "purely" on a guess/hunch?

That to me seems silly but of course wait (like I did/am) in the case of King Kong as we have evidence on our side.

What's the point? Enjoy the film while you can: you might be dead before a special edition comes out. And if you're not: upgrade.

Romero has a point to an extent. Bargains are better reason to wait IMO. I'm in usually no rush to buy DVDs. Thus am I rewarded with bargains or better editions.

I only get annoyed if they sneak a better version up on us relatively soon after the first one. If A: It's announced at the time or B: If it's years between releases then I have no to little problem with it.

I really only get a chance to watch films at the w/e what with with during the day and only a few hours in the evening. I'm never going to get through my back log but I'm going anywhere and neither are the DVDs, no rush.

My Thai Underworld: Evolution arrived today.

That picture shown on eThaiCD is actually the slip case's cover (which looks decent, not how that picture shows it), the slipcase has a hole at the front which when slides over the actual cover to reveal the lovely Kate. The actual cover is the same as the UK R2/R4 cover but a lot less clutter.

As for the DVD the PQ is generally very good but not quite as sharp as your average recent Hollywood blockbuster Western DVD so I can't say it's "as" good but like I said generally very good. I sampled a few scenes and man they went mad with the blue filter.

There is one fatal flaw: It's anamorphic WS BUT it's been cropped from 2.35:1 to 1.85:1 (or similar) .

The 5.1 is as expected tops, which consists of: English or Thai DD5.1, English or Thai Removable subs. The nice surprise however is 43 minutes of extras, they are different to the R1/UK R2/R4 extras:

International Trailer - 2 minutes
Featurette - 6 minutes
B-Roll - 15 minutes
Soundbites - 15 minutes
TV Clips x5 - 12 minutes

For £5 I'm happy enough I only wanted it to check the film out but why crop it??? If the SE comes I'll upgrade (assuming I like it).

Post the cover interested to see it if there are 2 of them, one on slipcse and one inside

I have the UK dvd with me right now for a friend as I dont want to buy it myself until I am sure I have the best version, so watching this dvd will tide me over

Well I had because your point was the cover art sucked NOT the PQ quality BUT this is moot considering it's bloody cropped.

Are you sure it hasnt just been opened up?

As a few thai and asian dvds just open up the matt and reveal new information which is hidden by the black bars if its like that I may get it myself I want to see new info.

Either way I want my 2.35:1 :shock: , most of the time it just looks so much nicer. Could you check your UK R2 Romero and lmk at what point(s) those captures appear so I can have a gander? I forgot to mention the Thai DVD is PAL

The Mattes aren't supposed to be 'opened up' for Super 35 (2.35) films when widescreened.

Was it shot Super 35?

Are you're saying it shouldn't be displayed at 1.85:1 Open Matt? Does this mean it's not possible or just not "how" it's supposed to be done?

Well, if it's 2.35 AND opened-up it would have to be Super 35. You can't soft-matte a scope film.

Ah of course good point, still it could still be cropped. If it is open matt I'll keep it as it was cheap.

Screen caps would be the easiest way to tell.

I'll try and watch it Sunday so I can then safely create captures against those on DVD Talk but if I can't some rough times from Romero would be useful. I'm not going to go searching on a film I've not seen.

I have my Kingdom of Heaven: DC to watch Saturday (tis a gorgeous looking set).

Bugger! just wactehd it last night and gave it to him today, so I dont have it now balls. I will try to get it back, but it wont be for weeks now so best not to rely on getting them from me.

The 1st Underworld on the commentary they even talk about the letterboxing of the film as they talk about things we dont see, as they are hidden under the black bars, mainly The blode vamps sex scene and the way the cropped her bits out

If you could give a rough idea when those captures appear it would still help???

how did your mate get the region 2 version so early romero,it's only out for rent at the moment retail isn't until the 19th june

I have my ways some people can get them very early for me, not the final retail version I will add.

Care to give a bit more detail? I don't need specifics just a bit more , did it have all the packaging?

I wouldn't want that EIV infested DVD anyway

Its a boxless promo review version hence I wouldnt want it anyway, I have a few of them, but not something I like to keep and hold dear to me on my shelf

A rough idea about what? the aspect ratio and possible cropping? no way I would remember by seeing pics, I can spot cuts in film in a heartbeat, but cropping is far, far harder to notice.

I too detest EIV dvds, in fact they make me want to be sick, just seing the spine is an awful sight! they seriously need to change that nasty Logo.

If the logo was all that was wrong with them I'd be happy. The quality of the cover and images on it is usually incredibly poor. My inkjet printer can do a better job + of course all those adverts.
