Survival Of The Dead (DVD, 2009)

This is a fucking great movie and not to be missed (certainly for genre fans).

Not as good as the first 3 but better than the rest and a sold film.

As good as Return of the Living Dead 4/5 :)

i shouldn't rise to the bait...but you are on the wind up,right? poor irish accents, crappy cgi, a pathetic twin sub-plot and a laughable climactic shoot-out :? if Survival rates 4/5 on your scale what score did you award Dawn? 10/5?

Zombieland: 3/5
Some funny commentary/rules here and there but the plot was flat out stupid. The crux of the storyline is there are only 4 survivors who are intent on killing zombies, screwing each other over yet finding solace in each other to form a pseudo family, & searching for twinkies. I liked the broad that looked like a cross between Lindsay Lohan and Mila Kunis based solely on aesthetic purposes as she couldn't act for shit. Overall rental. I see no repeat viewing at all.

I have seen Zombieland 3 times, so repeat viewing many times I say. Brilliant film.

"Plot", seriously if you expected that from this film, you expect way to much. Mind you it has 10 times more plot than most zombie films, even the great zombie films have shit plots, so no idea what you are after.

Nah not expecting plot at all. Just stating the obvious. As far as zombie films its good. The Bill Murray bit was great although predictable. I just dont view it as brilliant though.

BATMAN (1989)

The first half hour is terrific... alas from there on in the film goes rapidly downhill. I don't care what anyone says Nicholson's campy buffoon of a Joker isn't a patch on Heath Ledger's menacing interpretation. I haven't seen this in many years and was surprisingly disappointed at my revisit. Dark and intense... not particularly. Comic and silly is more like it. I can't remember why I used to rate this so highly. Danny Elfman's majestic score remains the highlight.

Cesar Romero is the first and best on-screen portrayal of The Joker

... at least he was supposed to be laughable.

I'm now starting to wonder what I'll think of Batman Returns which used to be(?) my favourite.

Anyways if anyone wants my Batman BD there's a mint copy on my trade list.

I like Batman 1989 but it hasn't held up too well and I no longer consider it a keeper. It's a 6 out of 10 film IMO.

I 'liked' the first 2 Burton films when they were released, but never 'loved' them. To be honest, when I watch them right now, I still feel pretty much the same about it. I never really thought Nickolson made a great joker though. I DID love the design of the movie, and especially the design of the Batmobile, and the whole look of Gotham. Plus the music is obviously tremendous.

I feel Batman The Animated Series is pretty much the best portrayal of Batman (apart from the best comics). Batman Begins was pretty good, and The Dark Knight was great, but I never really liked Bale as Wayne/Batman. I think he's a bit overrated. Heath Ledger was fantastic though. He really nailed that role to perfection.

As Yi says,Batman The Animated Series is easily the best on-screen/tv portrayal of the character. As for Tim Burton, has he ever made a truly "great" film. i mean he's made plenty of decent ones but for me there's always been something missing from them. Mars Attacks! is his most entertaining.

Never cared for Mars Attacks. Personally I like Sleepy Hollow the best I guess. Ed Wood is entertaining as well. Haven't seen Big Fish or any of his more recent work.

Mars Attacks is great. Burton's later work is mainly pretentious shite. For a cool Batman watch Dead End on youtube.

My issue with Tim Burton movies is that mostly they lack an emotional connection, which is what makes Edward Scissorhands so unique in his canon. That movie though freakish and gothic has heart. There was no heart in Batman.

I'm no fan of Christian Bale and Ledger owned The Dark Knight.

Dawn of the Dead (USA, 1978) - 4/5

35 mm, motherfucker!!

Wasn't easy, though. Spent 30 minutes in the Higashi Ginza station tunnel hell looking for the theatre (Ginza Cine Pathos) and had to ask diretions from like 5 people. Finally find the theatre in another tunnel...

So I go to the ticket counter.

Me: Zombie onegaishimasu (one Zombie, please) (Zombie is the Japanese title)
Clerk 1: Sumimasen... Zombie...???
Clerk 2: Dawn of the Dead!
Clerk 1: A, Dawn of the Dead. Sumimasen... blah blah... ima Shibuya de... blah blah... Moshiwake gozaimasen. Theataa N wakarimasuka? (Ah, Dawn of the Dead. I'm sorry... now in Shibuya... I'm truly sorry. Do you know Theater N?)
Me: Theater N wa...?
Clerk 1: Omachi kudasai... chizu o kakimashou... (please wait a moment, I will draw a map)

ok, so I find out the print has been sent another theatre on the other side of the town... I'm sure the website was giving outdated info...

Fast forward to the evening. I'm trying to figure out which side of the station is depicted in the hand drawn "map". Useless, can't tell. But there's the phone number.

Plan A: google maps. Cellphone runs out of battery.
Plan B: taxi. The driver can use the phone number to find the address. Except he can't. He only finds the approx area.
Plan C: ask someone. There's no one around. Not anyone who would know where a small theatre screening zombie movies is anyway.
Plan D: go around for 30 min by walk and finally find the damn well hidden cinema in the second floor of a building that has no posters or anything on the walls, just the name in small white font somewhere where you can't even see it. But hey, I arrived on time. 4 minutes before the film started! You lose, theater!!

Oh, right.

Me: Dawn of the Dead, onegaishimasu.
Clerk 1: Daun of taa...???
Clerk 2: Zombie!
Clerk 1: Ah, Zombie.
Me: D'oh

Edward Scissorhands is fantastic, easily great. Agreed about the heart issue Mark, Edward Scissorhands has oodles of it but most of his other work doesn't. Sweeney Todd is also excellent. Edward Scissorhands is his magnum opus.

I love Tim Burton's Batman, but mainly because it was one of the first films I saw. Ed Wood is probably his best work.

I thought the first hour or so of Scisorhands was great but it seemed to lose it's way towards the end.Still,it's certainly on of Burton's better efforts.

Planet of the Apes is the only Burton film I didn't really enjoy. Sure it's fine but it's no Burton film and is basically a dumb action film, save for the much improved ape-like human movement. The original is miles better, even though they spent zero time makes the actors act like apes.

Out for Justice: 3.5/5

The fights in the film had an authentic roughness to them and they're fun to watch :D Pretty violent too (corkscrew to the forehead, smacking a guy with a poolball in a sock), Segal's acting wasn't that bad either but it was hard to understand what was being said at times, he mumbled a bit :D
