Isn't it already under £10 anyway?

Thats not the point, a few people I know aint got HD yet and bought it for the standard dvd! they are buggered now. It was the first time the film had been released in america in widescreen you see on standard dvd, now it isnt. The price of £10ish should be lowered a lot more.

Get a Multiregion Player then. I hold no sympathy for people who cannot watch a film they love because they're too lazy to go Multiregion or Multi-format.

Most people do not know about multiregion still, nothing to do with lazy at all.

When you get a "Wrong Region" message go and research what it means then

Nahh everyone I know still have no clue about regions.

Some friends of mine bought new TV's and dvd players for christmas, all they wanted to know is can they play pirates some are in for a shock, as I know certain players still do not play certain copied dvds. Its not like they put a sticker on the front saying THE ULTIMATE PIRATE PLAYER

Most people just do not buy overseas dvds, so hey they dont know about such things and have no need to and probibly never will. The UK puiblic care far more about pirates from what I have found over the last 5 years or so.


Regions, well more and more people are going HD players as their main player and they dont play all regions, thats the big problem now. I wish I could get rid of my dvd player, but even me knowing what I am on about does not help yet with the region probs maybe another 6 months a player with be fully multiregion.

It's impossible for any player to play all bootleg DVDs simply because the production behind them varies so much.

They could be perfectly fine copies you've created yourself or really dodgy ones created by some Asian pirate. They could use dodgy DVD5 discs that die over time. It's just no possible to guarantee it. Some definitely do handle dodgy discs more than others though, player price isn't even a guide for this.

I'd wager Oppo make a better Upscaling DVD Player than Toshiba. In my case I use a High End Hard Disk/DVD Recorder so won't be getting rid of it anyway.

I'd say it will be longer than 6 months before we start seeing DVD MR properly.

Watched War blu-ray earlier,one of the first discs to require profile 1.1 for some of it's special features.worked flawlessly on my ps3. it also plays on my son's uk one so it appears to be regionfree. hopefully this marks a change in policy for lionsgate who have been region coding catalogue titles (house of a 1000 corpses)

War is Lionsgate right Salty? Is it definitely Profile 1.1 and not a second HD encode? Good to hear it works though. Agreed I hope they're dropping Regional Coding too.

It's also great to see Unbreakable coming. I still say it's his best film. It's likely to be Region A encoded for those planning to play it back on a UK Player, or do Disney only do that with new titles?

Disney catalogue titles are usually region free i think, the first 2 Pirates were yet the new one is region locked (uk is region free) Cars is region free so if a catalogue pixar title isn't locked i'm betting Unbreakable won't be either,

The Region Coding seems to be entirely arbitrary with these dopey studios.

Why do you say that? America of all the DVD/HD Disc countries in the world is bar far the hottest country to control releases for. It's less important to region code back catalogue titles.

Resident Evil Extinction is another disc with profile 1.1 content.played fine on my ps3. i can't get my head round this profile lark.does it mean people with early standalone BD players won't be able to play this content even via firmware upgrade if so that sucks and manufacturers should offer a hardware exchange programme.

In order officially meet Profile 1.1 or Profile 2.0 (which adds Ethernet support) you must have hardware to cope with a second video stream (PIP) and enough memory.

The simple truth is regardless of a software upgrade (i.e - firmware) most Standalone BD Players releases prior to this year do not have the hardware to start with. You'll still be able to play the films and all the extras except for the Profile 1.1 extras.

Someone tested Resident Evil (I think that was it) on a PS3 and the PIP Commentary appeared but on a Standalone BD Player the option simply wasn't there.

There is a specification of hardware manufacturers need to meet to be certified Profile 1.1 but it seems some are bending this to still be Profile 1.1 compatible but not "quite" meet the spec. sheet. The Samsung Combo is an example of this. The LG BH200 is also Profile 1.1 compatible but that's not out at all yet to say what hardware it has.

In the case of the Samsung Combo a few are available at Best Buy but the official launch hasn't happened yet even in America. There are rumours Samsung are going to release it in January in America too, with hopefully "final spec." hardware and firmware.

I would've thought that Warners were the best studio... but admittedly I'm talking as an outsider to the HD formats.

A more relevant statement would be how many of those are "Region locked exclusives". If it's available on HD-DVD somewhere else or Region Free BD it doesn't matter much to me.

I'd agree Warner are one of the best HD Studios, DVD too. An American site is never going to pay any attention to Regional Coding.

35% is still far too high. even disney are now randomly locking catalogue titles. Bad Santa is region A locked for example.and very few fox titles will appear anywhere on HD-DVD.

A few major Fox titles were released by different distributors overseas:

Die Hard 3, Strange Days, The Towering Inferno, True Lies...

And it seems that MGM (ie. Fox) still own the first 20 Bond films, so yep, they'll be Region-locked, the cocksuckers!!
