There is only one point to owning a Plasma/LCD below 40" and that's to save space. If you have the space you're much better off sticking to CRT at that size.

I'm using a 28" that is at least 8 years old. I haven't bought a new one because every single new TV I've seen has worse picture quality. Very digital look, I can't see any grain even with all grain removal and shit turned off, and so on. Maybe those have just been bad TVs. My parents have 32" Samsung, I believe it's this one, and it's a complete piece of shit. I could even see heavy ghosting on interlaced dvds (watched the HK dvd of Sparrow last christmas using this TV and it was a painful experience) and that certainly couldn't be because of the 4" size increase.

But I really don't know what I'm talking about so please someone tell me what's up with this. Where can I find a new TV that doesn't look like shit (not that I'm buying one anytime soon, but some day).

Mine decimates all Tube TV's I have ever seen (bar high end editing screens of old).

Tube screens suck ass with their pulsating headache inducing pain, I would not go back to tubes ever.

It certainly looks like it has more screen next to my old CRT, not sure if I should set the output to Auto or 1080p though (BD is connected using HDMI BTW)
I went for 32" because of the space in my room (or lack of), my family thought it would be fine for my room. Initially I wanted 37" but came round to it in the end I guess, ah well
Even a normal DVD like Kung Fu Panda looks pretty good on the screen.

Kung Fu Panda should look pretty glorious on it even a dvd. Dvd will look great on 32 inches, larger you go the worse it gets, so 32 for standard dvd is perfect really. Most dvds still look great on bigger screens, hence why many people have yet to jump up to HD

That's one of the reasons I really don't want to own a huge TV. Only BD's would look good, but there's hardly anything worth buying to me available on BD. Some supermainstream classics, yes, but I've seen those films already. Some new films, but I already saw some of those in cinema. The world is full of movies I'm dying to see for the first time. Many of them are only available on vcd or vhs. I don't have much time or money for films I've already seen.

I've had PS3 for several months so I can buy BD's. I don't get much anything out of the superior image because of my TV, but of course if the film is available in both formats then I will go for the BD, so I don't have to buy it again when get a new TV. But I've only bought two BD's so far.

Out of the 150 films I currently have on my shopping list maybe 3 or 4 have been released on BD.

I have a 40 incher and most dvds look quality on it (as long as they are ok dvd's to start with, tatty old stuff looks as bad as it always does). I would be happy to watch dvds, and do all the time, more than HD as I own a few thousands standard dvds so no way I will upgrade all them, most look perfect and cost little which also helps.

I still buy plenty of dvds now becuase they are cheap as chips and most do look great it has to be said, everything dont have to be HD.

It's the reason I'm so in doubt about which new TV to get.

Either a HD-ready cheap 42-inch Panasonic plasma, which is supposedly pretty good for DVD's and 'normal TV' reception, or a FullHD 42 inch Panasonic, or even go for a 50 inch Full HD Samsung plasma...

The FullHDTV's will obviously be great for Blu-ray and gaming/PC, but I'm afraid my DVD's will look horrible on it.

The HD-ready would probably look pretty sweet for gaming and DVD's and normal TV, but obviously you won't really get the most out of Blu-Ray, games, and connecting a PC to it...

It's a difficult choice to have to make.

I havent tried my BDs yet, the player setting some DVDs to 4/3 takes some getting used to though and all the Zoom modes chop the bottom of the screen off. It even set When The Lion Roars (MGM doc) to 4/3 and when I used to watch that on my old player it would play as broadcast (ie in Widescreen).
Watching Digital though in lovely RGB makes me realise how shite analogue actually is. But this morning even when the analogue picture was poor the DVB was tuner worked fine.

Fair enough. The Face/Off HD-DVD is decent quality, if obviously overly DVNRed, even I can spot it.

Who told you DVDs look bad on 1080p TVs?

When I watched the whole thing a few nights ago I noticed it had pretty poor encoding considering it was around 30mbps, but at least it didn't seem to have DNR or EE. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between this and the US/JP ones.

A Wii and some games.
Havent got it working yet though.
