Yeah, I don't buy any incomplete movies. Haven't picked up 13 Assassins and Good, Bad and the Weird for that reason either.

But we've been having these discussions for 15-20 years now, about the problem of movies being cut up for international/western audiences, and yet it sadly keeps happening. Thankfully we now just have internet to either import an uncut version, or download an uncut version. I'm not spending a dime on incomplete products. Knowingly at least.

I still havent seen 13 Assassins yet, would rather see the full version on DVD/BD.

I'd rather see those movies on BR/DVD as well, but I'm not gonna pay ridiculous money to import a japanese release, so I just downloaded the uncut versions instead.

Maybe, in a few years time, we'll also see an uncut release here in the west, but TBH I doubt it. Hero (Jet Li) STILL doesn't have an uncut release here(!)

Hero is uncut, it's just not the extended version.

It's not the director's cut. And by pretty much all accounts that version is the better version. I've only seen that extended cut, so I can't comment personally on if it's better than the shorter cut...

There are two version. The censored Korean version, and the uncensored International Version. It's true that both versions have some exclusive footage, because Kim can't decide what he wants to do with his films and usually makes several versions. This is the case with Good Bad Weird - the International Version isn't a version made for foreigners, it's just an alternate version. They probably threw coin on which one they release in Korea and which one abroad.

Is the UK one definitely the censored version though, or is it in fact an uncut Korean version? (i.e. containing more footage than was shown in Korean cinemas). That's something I'm unclear on. It might be why Yi was saying there are more than 2 versions.

As far as I know "uncut Korean Version" doesn't exist and never will because the International Version is the director's cut. According to Movie Censorhip Kim used the Korean version, then inserted the missing violence and some story bits, and removed some bits that he didn't like, and that's the International Version.

I suppose it's the title "International Version" that confuses people. Only the Korean version was censored, the International Version is the director's version which Kim wasn't allowed to release in Korea.

KR vs Int. version
- 14 extended scenes in the international version = 3 min. 20 sec.
- 15 extended scenes in the Korean theatrical version = 5 min. 37 sec.
- 3 alternative Sequences

Should also be mentioned the ending music is different in both versions...

Ah is there, but Korean BDs are expensive and to be honest I just want to watch the Director's Cut.

The director's cut doesn't exist though and for all we know, was never finished. I'd guess the extended cut is the preferred cut but it's just a guess.
gasteropod wrote:UK = Korean cut, US = International cut, but for once it may be the latter that's actually the preferred version, it's really confusing.

That sounds like the international cut is the director's cut. It's the one he got "final cut" on anyway. Just because it's missing footage, it doesn't make the footage necessary.

I sold mine because it's quite cropped and the film is rather mediocre anyway.

Well I did because I bought the IVL trilogy box set, but that only has the extended cut of Police Story 2 so it depends if you'd like to hang on to the theatrical HKL. The IVL has better PQ, though.
