Yeah so I hear. On horrordvds he talks about the original '95 LD transfer and why Pioneer used the wrong version for the DVD. Apparently he made one copy with a complete restoration including line removal (seen on Elite '95 laserdisc) and a back-up copy that wasn't complete and had no line removal at all. The back-up was used for Pioneer's DVD versions.
It's great that Dark Sky is releasing this.

Comment at the end of review:
"When I purchased the Pioneer DVD in March-April 1999, I paid close to $30 for it. Absolutely wonderful review, Rhett. Very informative and the screengrab comparisons really seal the deal - and those were comparisons with Elite's 1996 LaserDisc which has the true Don May/Tobe Hooper approved transfer, not the unfinished workprint used on Pioneer's 1998 and 2003 DVDs. Imagine the contrast between Dark Sky's DVD transfer and Pioneer's DVD transfer! This new transfer from Dark Sky looks too good to be true. Don May has said that the old transfer now looks like garbage and that the new transfer is a revelation. Even though I haven't seen it yet, (excluding pictures) I agree. How could anyone not love this new transfer? It's beautiful and it blows away that non-anamorphic yucky transfer on Pioneer's DVD one hundred times over. I've had my copy pre-ordered from Amazon.com since late May. September 26th can't arrive soon enough."

I couldn't find the original board with Don on it. But he did say what this person says he did.

Looks like there's foley effects missing from the new release, even on the mono track.

Not that I care, it's still shits on every other DVD EVER released, which all have a transfer that is worse than the one from the Laserdisc.

I've only seen the film twice anyway, first time was on the horrid R4 which was NTSC-PAL and compression artefact city; 2nd time was when watching a VHS copy of the R4 transfer that I had made on a VCR with dirty heads (I didn't have a DVD copier at the time).

If sound effects are missing, I'll stick with my old Blue Dolphin disc for now, unless a repress is ordered
