You didn't miss all the depth? The anguish by the two leads? One wanting to be a cop but is really a crook, the other hates being a crook and wants to be a cop (this is in The Departed).

I preferred the HK ending but also thought they wanted to come up with something new.

I too preferred the HK ending but respect to Scorcese for trying to do something new. Overall though - I hate to admit it - but this is one remake that is better than an already excellent film.

I have seen it, I have the HK DVDs of IA 1-3. What I should of said was "Should I revisit the Asian version?"

Only if you want to compare and contrast. I didn't bother as I had seen IA plenty of times and it was fresh in my memory.
The Departed and Infernal Affairs are linked by the mole idea only. Otherwise they are two completely different films. It is almost as if someone gave the script to Scorcese and Lau and each went away to make their own film.
Scorcese made the better one.

Hmm.. interesting, IA isn't really fresh in my memory (but I did find it a very good film).
Hopefully I go see it today (The Departed).

The Departed - 4/5
Departed was extremely good (mostly) if too long IMO - Nicholson, Damon and DiCaprio are outstanding, the script is great esp. Nicholson and DiCaprio
Some great snappy dialogue from all the leads.
This seemed more of a gangster picture compared to the cops n' Robbers film Infernal Affairs for some reason.
As Brad says the focus of the film is changed so the main focus is the Leo/Tony character, in IA it was Damon/Andy Lau. The Matt Damon character is not as complex here - in IA
Andy Lau wants to be a good cop but is also loyal to Eric Tsang whereas Matt Damon just plays a badass. You're supposed to think Leo/Tony is the bad guy because he's related to the gang boss.
Another problem was that this film was way too slow, I did get bored a couple of times, whereas Infernal Affairs had excellent pacing. I liked how some shots in The Departed were very similar to IA.

"Departed" sequel planned
With the massive bloodletting at the climax of "The Departed," you'd think it might be hard to make a sequel. Well, a domestic take of $125.2 million is making Warner Bros. Pictures and director Martin Scorsese think not.
Talks are under way to put together a sequel to the crime thriller, which has garnered five Oscar nominations and is the biggest boxoffice hit of Scorsese's long career. Sources say that "Departed" writer William Monahan is working on a take that would bring back the temperamental foul-mouthed cop played by Mark Wahlberg, who received an Oscar nomination for the role, and introduce a new character to be played by none other than Robert De Niro.
Sources caution that Scorsese would need to approve any take before development was to move forward. A prequel is not being ruled out, either. "Departed" is an adaptation of the Hong Kong pic "Infernal Affairs," to which Warners acquired the rights in 2003. The studio also had option rights to the movie's two sequels.
It is unclear if this new movie would fall under that agreement since Monahan's take could end up being an original story. The acclaimed Chinese movies are regarded as "The Godfather" of Asian cinema, with the 2003 sequel being a prequel, much like "The Godfather 2." The third movie combined elements of the first two movies. Warners declined comment.

Interesting thanks Grim.
I had heard about this but not Scorsese's involvement. Has he ever made a sequel before? I hear it will focus on Mark Wharlberg's character which is a good thing, he was one of the best in The Departed.

How can one say that The Departed is a completely different film?! It's almost identical to IA! There are scenes that are frame by frame, shot by shot identical apart from other actors and locations...
However what I do think Scorsese managed was to make the film much more coherent. At times I was very confused watching IA... not so with The Departed. Though, I found the ending rather cheesy and a... cop out

Nah not really. There were new scenes, side-stories and characters in Departed. TBH only a handful of scenes were similar and I'd hardly say they were "frame by frame" identical.
Total exaggeration tbh.

Well, I've watched Infernal Affairs several times and could happily watch it several more times. I can't say the same about The Departed. The Departed is much grittier, and definitely not as tense or exciting. Damon and DiCaprio just aren't, and never will be, as exciting to watch as Tony Leung and Andy Lau, in my opinion. And Nicholson? Well, it was Jack doing what he does best, which is a bit old now (as is he). Eric Tsang's Sam was just so much more of an original character and role that Tsang played brilliantly and uniquely. And the character of the psychiatrist? Absolutely nothing was improved upon by combining the two roles into one in The Departed. BORING character.
