I don't think it was a scam...he just started with the basic premise and concept, but kept making the world bigger, adding characters and scenes until it became a true epic that couldn't work as a single 2 hour film, so he split it up. Of course, it made since from a financial standpoint as well since both made quite a bit of money, but had the first not been as well received the second one would have been screwed, so it was a gamble...that paid off handsomely.

I'd rather have 4 hours of Kill Bill than 2, personally.

The idea for splitting the movie came from the producers, although Tarantino had thought about it too (but not dared to suggest it). I'm happy they released it in two volumes. There's no way it would've been released unedited otherwise (my guess is they would've made Tarantino cut out at least 70 minutes)

This is the first I'm hearing of this. I had always heard that Tarantino originally planned for just one film, but he got so into it he just kept writing more and more scenes and expanding everything that it became clear that it wouldn't fit into a single film, so he split it up into two films. That's how I always understood it happened.

I've done my Top 10 now, loads of movies are "bubbling under" though, this might change.

Feel free to expand your lists to 20 or however many you want. The whole point of this thread is to discuss our favorite flicks, however many there might be.

While I realise you may think you are serious about that list just now, and I realise Casino Royale was a good film, but was it really BEST EVER sort of calibre?? You put a classic standing the test of time film 2nd, Blade Runnder, but in 20 years is Casino Royale even going to be featuring in anywhere?!?!?

I personally think people have been getting carried away with CR. It was very good, no questions there, but it wasn't THAT good. It was THAT good compared to what a lot of people thought it was going to be like because of the outcry at Daniel Craig being cast as Bond. But it surely cannot be top film ever, or even top 10. Surely it is just a current emotion that will be gone in a little while.

Truth is my list changes every week. At the moment I wrote that that's what I thought about it and believe Blade Runner has been number one many times before.
Your current emotion point is valid and it is pretty much true. I'm sure it would change in due time.

Seriously though... I am quite surprised you have "The Lion King" in there. When I first watched it at the theatre, I noticed that it really is the storyline of any random kung fu film. The guy's father/master whatever gets killed. He is thought to be death as well. He escapes the city in order to train somewhere in the countryside in order to come back and seek revenge.

I guess it is, but I think the makers probably had Hamlet and other Shakespeare in mind more when they thought of it Plus the bad guy in a kung fu usually dies and Scar's punishment is just to really think about what he's done

Do you not rate "Lion King"? Wasn't sure whether to put "Pinocchio" (sp?) in there, that is very good too (wish Disney would do a SE of that).

Yes, but the FC's okay, too. I usually hate after-tweaking, but this one wasn't so bad.
