This could be great if done correctly.. but I really doubt The Simpsons will work well as a movie

Some of the new(er) episodes I've seen havent been that funny

But 20th Century Fox has confirmed The Simpsons movie will be made.
A 25 second trailer was shown in the US before "Ice Age 2", promising to introduce "The greatest hero in American history"

It then cut to Homer in his underwear, who says "Er.. I forgot what I was supposed to say".

Simpsons has had consistently low quality writing ever since Groening left to do Futurama in 1998/99. The film will be a complete waste of time unless Groening is at the creative helm.

This is very true. I remember watching an episode years ago, where the family had won a trip or something and were on a train talking to a hobo and the episode degenerated into 3 random stories, which just weren't funny.
Compared to classic episodes like Deep Space Homer, if it wasn't for the fact that the characters physically looked and sounded the same, you wouldn't be able to tell that it was from the same show.

Wow, do you put that much faith in the IMDB as being a credible source for films this early in the pipeline? IMO it's all just fanboy wishful thinking at this point.

Talkbackers for yesterday's article regarding THE SIMPSONS MOVIE were intrigued by our source's allusion to "original writers" scripting the film.
Fair enough...in this movie, the script is paramount (no offense, Fox).
This morning, an Austrailian publication called The Melbourne Age shed some light on who will be handling these monumental duties. According to The Melbourne Age, THE SIMPSONS MOVIE is written by Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, Al Jean, Brian Scully, Ian Maxtone-Graham, George Meyer, David Mirkin, Mike Reiss, Matt Selman, John Swartzwelder, and Jon Vitti (thanks to Skel for pointing us to this article).
In related news, Reuters is reporting that David Silverman, co-director of Pixar's MONSTERS, INC., director of many SIMPSONS episodes (and now the series' "supervising director") is helming the movie.
A Fox press release indicates that Albert Brooks, Minnie Driver and Erin Brockovich will be guest voices in the film.
I've received no refutation, or confirmation, regarding the plot point referenced in yesterday's article.

Chernin's comments about the release strategy behind the Simpsons film – among the first tidbits that have emerged about it – came as part of a broader defence by the executive Tuesday of the value of having various units of entertainment giants work together despite recent remarks from top sector executives who have questioned the value of such efforts.

While pointing to the successful recent launches of Meltdown and X-Men: The Last Stand as evidence that his firm does "a better job than anybody" in bringing the power of various media operations together behind a film, Chernin said Simpsons offered a particularly big opportunity thanks to its status as "one of the most valuable ... content brands in the world."

"The great thing about the Simpsons (film) is it is an opportunity to go both ways," he said.

"We can not only use those parts of the company to help us launch that movie, but we can use the movie to help us increase the value of the brand" across the various News Corp. media platforms that offer "Simpsons" content.

Chernin said the entertainment titan will use what he called a "pulse campaign" to release key details about the movie and promote it in three waves, which will happen in November, February and May TV sweep periods.

The "Rock and a Hard Place" bit reminded me of bits on The Simpsons when they want to stretch a gag out, like Sideshow Bob hitting the rakes, but it still made me laugh

I never have worked out why this show is so popular. It's okay but nothing special IMO.

Man, The Simpsons is GREATTTTttttttttttt...
Obviously, it also has a few mediocre episodes here and there, but overall it's just one of the very finest comedy shows EVER.
