16/9 ratio is 720x404 or 720x405, not 720x408.

HK Vidéo lacks the contrastey look of the Mei Ah but is also sharper, brighter and doesn't have any edge-enhancement.

Even though I prefer the brighter HK Vidéo, I'd say both caps look good.

There's a lot of little white specs on Mei Ah. How about HK Video (it looks cleaner in the second cap)

There's lots of little specs too, but for the most part the picture is very clean (the lack of edge-enhancement hides a lot of print damage).



Some shots feature extreme print damage but are handled quite well (remember this scene in the HKL DVD ? Downright atrocious)

Was it SITES or DM1 that had missing Cantonese dialogue that required bits from the Mandarin/English dub?

The HK Vidéo is one of the few (the only ?) disc to feature a full cantonese mono track.

The little specs on mei ah pop up like every two seconds. Really. I'm sure the HK Video is cleaner than that, right?

Mei Ah Drunken Master audio is a cantonese/mandarin/english mix. The dialogue is in chinese, but several other "sound effects" (like argh, ough etc. when people get hit) come from the english dub. It's really noticable that the effects come from a different source. Same goes with Columbia. HK Video is the only one with complete cantonese track.

I thought their DM transfer was pretty decent. For some reason the colors look terrible on my computer but not nearly that bad TV. The first time I took caps I though I had some Eagle Vision on, but no.

But overall I think HK Video is about 500 000 times better than Mei Ah or Columbia. HK Video is the only one that didn't drive me crazy...

EDIT: I checked the DM transfer again and it does look washed out at times but it's still pretty decent IMO. And the sound more than makes up for it.

Going from those caps I'd say I prefer the look of the Mei Ah.

The 4th shot of the HK video looks much better than the Mei Ah, I cant tell much difference between the others.

What I like most about HK Vidéo is that they have constant quality. Sometimes other companies do better, but HK Vidéo are always good (not great, but not bad either).
Other companies are often hit and miss (HKL, Tartan, Mei Ah, even Columbia).

Sony looks pretty much identical to Mei Ah. There is a difference but it could be caused by different software. Judging by the second cap, the print is the the exact same (all the same white specs)

The Sony has English credits. How about the Mei Ah?

Mei Ah has English credits but with false Chinese ones added.

The HKL and HK Video DVDs are the only ones to have the original bi-lingual English/Chinese credits.

And HKL was cropped and cut. If you can get it cheap, it is worth a look for the US soundtrack

The R1 SITES is OOP, dvdplanet or dvdempire might still have it in stock though. There's a fairly cheap Korean Sony port-over in print at the moment.
