Prime Minister of Japan

Mr. Shinzo Abe

1-6-1 Nagata-cho 1 Chome

Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-8968 JAPAN

Dear Prime Minister Abe,

We are outraged by the annual brutal slaughter of dolphins and whales that takes place in Japan . The images of bloody red water clearly show the world that Japan has little respect for the state of the world’s oceans and for the conservation of the marine resources it claims to support.

Many scientific studies show that the oceans are in decline. We must take whatever actions are necessary to stop their over-exploitation and to protect the creatures that live in them. These dolphins do not belong to Japan . The status of the species of dolphins and whales that you kill are either endangered, threatened, or unknown. It is an unthinkable waste that they will likely end up as a meat product or deceptively sold as whale meat, polluted with toxic levels of mercury and cadmium, killing people that eat it. It is tragic and unacceptable that the remaining dolphins that are not killed will end up destined for death in an aquarium, water park, or "swim with dolphins" program.

In addition, the methods used to kill these animals are cruel.

Corralling the dolphins into bays, then making them suffer a long and painful death by spears, hooks, and drowning is an inhumane way of fishing. This action is disgraceful and has caused much disappointment in the international community.

We demand that Japan permanently and immediately renounce and stop this slaughter. We will work diligently to bring this issue to international light until you have ceased your reprehensible violence.

Sincerely,

The undersigned

I'd urge you all to read up a bit before signing petitions of these kinds. I couldn't find any concrete information (apart from the usual internet conspiracies, one of these claimed 36000 dolphins were killed every year... Official IWC numbers saying nothing about dolphins but Japans quota seems to be about 1400 cetacens whereof 1155 are minke whales which are at low risk) that Japanese whaling is more brutal or threatening to the wildlife of the ocean than any other whaling that goes on around the world.

I'm not saying you shouldn't sign if this is indeed true, just to research a bit and not just take anything in a petition, propaganda or even media as facts off the bat.

(Said the Norwegian :D)

Fair enough, but whichever way you look at it how can it not be cruel?

That depends on your definition of cruel... doesn't it?

Humans kill animals in the millions every day to feed off.

However, the methods of killing described in the petition sure sounds cruel... but I rather questioned the entire petitions facts. Those methods however, sound very much like what I've heard described from killings by the Inuits up in Canada/Alaska... which hardly nobody bothers with... :-/

It's just that these "dolphin-lovers" have been after Japan and Norway for years, while seemingly ignoring stuff closer to their own borders which may be a lot more cruel to the animals...

i find it funny how one can protest against one kind of animal cruelty, but ignore the rest. it is true gojensen that people become to concerned with things happening elsewhere, and forget (or dont want to) to look at the situations nearer to home.

look at the organisation here against animal testing, LOL yeah ok, testing is really bad, but...there are more animals outside of this country that need help. but they dont realize that. for me they loose my support, for that (and other reasons, mainly their violence)

imagine if all these seperate groups, and follows joined together, to create, on big anti-animal cruelty group, people would listen then...

All animal cruelty and killing (even for food) is wrong and there can be moral no defence of it. Just because we do it doesn't make it right. And just because we have seperate cruelty issues in the UK doesn't make the Norwegians or Japanese any less barbaric.

So you are a vegetarian then since you don't condone of killing for food? Or did you just smack cruelty and killing together? Some of us like meat, and for those who do it's a necessity to kill the animal first (otherwise it would be really cruel :D)

Anyways, how Norwegians kill whales is a lot more "humane" and "kind" than how the rest of the world kills and treats i.e. chickens, cows, sheep and even fish...

I don't think I'll say much more on this subject though...

I oppose people killing animals like wales and rhinos and elephants and pandas etc... actually, I oppose all killing of animals... but I have to admit I'm also a hypocrite cause I do eat meat.

hehe how can you kill something humanely? what do you do? tickle it to death? i dont condone the killing of any animal for sport/food/trade beit humanely or inhumanley.

i dont know if the norweigan methods of whale killing have advanced much since 1994, from explosive harpooning?, i wouldnt count is as humane, 44% dont die instantenously, and some even take nearly an hour to die... while the majority take nearly 4 minutes. i wouldnt say thats too humane really....isnt there to other way using a bullet? i havent reserched it much, doesnt sound particulalry humane either imo.

and you say minke whales are not endangered, they will be in a few years, whats the quota for norway now over 1000 a year right? how long do you think that will take to deplete the species? (tho i know the actual rate that they are caught and slaughtered arent quite as high as that, but its high enough)

I have to agree with Yi, I guess I'm a hypocrite cause I eat meat, but I oppose the killing of endangered animals like whales, rhino, elephants, panda, tigers, etc.. :)

You owuld be suprised whats considered as an Endangered Animal, and what is not. Really some peope think its when the population hits low numbers, but some endangered animals are still about in the hundreds of millions (or a lot more in some cases).

I dont care about cows, chickens etc.. as much as I do say the last Pandas, the last White Tigers etc.. its the way we are, and most people kill a lot of the rare animals for one reason, to make shitloads of cash. But you also would be very suprised at how little the killers get for the animals, some elephants and tigers the guy who initially kills them gets a few dollars, its the resale to bigger people where the cash is made. So in theory give the scumbag killers a few pound and thats a reason NOT to kill them :D makes sense to me.

But hell Whales and other bigger animals are not killed, they are turtured theres a big difference on that front fron instant death and years/weeks/days or hours of suffering like with the Whales.
